Chapter 251: Chapter 17 Freya_1
"Ding dong ding." Catherine knocked on the window of the luxury carriage: "Freya, I’m here, congratulations, you have finally found your own happiness."
"Is that Catherine?" Hearing this voice, Pannis felt intoxicated. Pannis considered himself a worldly man, having heard countless women’s voices, many of which were mesmerizing. The voice of the Elf Queen Flare was elegant and dignified, like the voice of a god descending from heaven, noble and untouchable; the voice of the Winged twins was clear and lively, like a mountain stream, brisk and naturally rhythmic; the voice of the mermaid princess of the Sea Emperor’s clan was gentle and delicate, like thread on a spindle, entwining countless hearts, moving people unwittingly. But, when hearing these voices, Pannis merely felt admiration, not intoxication. Now, however, Pannis was genuinely a little drunk, Freya’s simple greeting, her voice was like a rich wine, the more he pondered it, the more its lingering charm seemed endless, leaving a long-lasting aftertaste.
"So, wasn’t I right?" Lina nudged Pannis in the waist and said in a low voice: "We told you, Freya is worthy of the title of Holy City’s gem, whether it’s her voice or her appearance, they are both treasures rarely seen in this world."
"Indeed." Pannis exhaled, shook his head, and sighed: "Such a voice, I fear even the gods would go mad with envy."
"Are you interested?" Lina playfully winked, patting Pannis on the shoulder, and said: "If you are, then charge forward with courage, we’re all behind you, offering you unshakeable support."
"Your suggestion reeks of conspiracy." Pannis gave Lina a suspicious side-eye: "I remember you saying that she’s very, very repulsed by men who take the initiative to approach her. What do you mean by encouraging me to do just that?"
"Ha, Ha, that’s not the half of it." Lina giggled with her hand covering her mouth: "Freya is..."
Before Lina could finish her sentence, Freya’s voice drifted through the one-way carriage window: "Catherine, every minute of the over seven hundred days away from you I have struggled with thoughts of missing you and longing for you. Being unable to spend happy moments with you felt like swallowing a handful of winter night’s fallen snow, icy and painful, choking my throat."
"Heh, heh, heh." Catherine’s eyes twitched slightly, her smile strained as she spoke: "That’s a little, a little exaggerated, it’s only been two years. Our lives are long, two years is nothing, look, we’ve met again, haven’t we?"
"No, Catherine, you don’t understand how I feel." Freya’s voice grew somber and melancholy, one could imagine a delicate and frail woman clutching her chest in sorrow: "Only the days spent with you guys truly gave life meaning, it was like unexpectedly seeing flowers bloom in the spring, filling me with joy. After leaving the mansion, I wrote poetry, I played the piano, I admired the moon, but I could never again find that previous sense of being moved."
"Ha, ha, that’s really a pity." Catherine laughed dryly, not only were her eyes twitching now but her lips were as well: "Freya, you haven’t changed at all, you always have such interesting things to say, ha ha, ha ha."
"Lina, question for you. Does this lady have some mental issues?" Pannis glared at Lina suspiciously, asking in a low voice: "What was your motive for urging me also, to charge forward? A woman this lethal, I can’t handle, don’t put me in harm’s way."
"Did I harm you?" Lina replied with evasive eyes: "Look, I’m encouraging you to bravely pursue a beauty, this is to encourage you. How could it be harmful, right? You not only refuse my goodwill but also falsely accuse me, oh, my heart is like a faded, fallen leaf, waning in the cold autumn wind."
"Shut up, talk properly." Behind Lina, Vivian lifted her magic staff and hit Lina on the head: "One crazy lady is enough, don’t you go wild too."
"Ouch, Vivian, you idiot." Lina glared at Vivian while holding her head: "You can’t use the weapon specifically designed to handle Freya to attack me."
The three of them stood a good distance away from the carriage, completely abandoning the idea of team spirit and left Catherine to struggle alone, engaging in small talk with Freya. Nobody wanted to rescue Catherine. In Lina’s words, Freya during her "high" phase was just too terrifying, and no one except Catherine, who’s specialized in defense as a Guardian Knight, could withstand one hit from Freya.
It took half an hour before Catherine staggeringly returned, listlessly instructing Ayrland to set off. She climbed onto a horse at the end of the team, slumping onto its back and remaining motionless.
"Big sis, how are you doing?" Once Lina ensured nobody else was around, she reverted to her true character, leaned in and asked with a smirk: "Need me to give you some first aid?"
"Back off." Catherine weakly kicked at Lina: "I’m on my last leg, didn’t think she’d still have such great combat power even when about to get married, sob sob, really didn’t see this coming. Had I known, I wouldn’t have taken this mission."
"What’s the deal with this princess?" Pannis asked as he finally caught up: "Is she really not deranged from some trauma?"
"Actually, Freya is a really nice person, kind and gentle, and her heart is purer than any of us, perhaps this has something to do with the protection she received since childhood." Catherine steadied herself on the back of the horse, massaging her temple and said: "Just one problem, sometimes her speech can be a bit, a bit, a bit strange, like just now. And no matter how ordinary the circumstances, something may remind her, and then her mood falls into being emotionally moved. For instance, the most grotesque incident I’ve witnessed, she saw me trimming the hedges around our home and then she was depressed for three days, we totally didn’t understand why."
"Your situation is still better, big sister." Lina made a remembering face and said: "I’ve seen her dazed all day, touched by a child running past her with a tooth they had shed."
Pannis gaped, listening with amazement as the girls took turns recounting their friend’s funny stories. It took him a long while to finally manage to close his mouth, pointing at Lina shakily, saying: "That kind of genius, you... just let me get close to her? What kind of grudge do you have against me?"
"Alright, enough with the nonsense. No more badmouthing Freya." Catherine rubbed her face and regained her composure: "I just had a chat with Freya, apart from the bunch of bizarre descriptions, I did manage to get some useful information."
"What an accomplishment." Vivian commented with a smirk on her face: "can’t believe that numbskull could actually provide useful information when she is having one of her episodes, it’s nothing short of a miracle."
"Hehe, Pannis, let me tell you, Vivian was always Freya’s nemesis back then." Lina chuckled and explained: "Whenever Vivian was around, and as soon as Freya had an episode, Vivian would use her magic staff to knock her on the head. And Freya would behave for a little while before the cycle repeated."
"Enough! Both of you." Catherine frowned at Lina and Pannis: "I sacrificed my sanity and lifespan to get this information, listen carefully, or you can go chat with Freya."
"Yes." The three of them promptly shut their mouths, if possible, they would even sew them up.
"First of all, the simplicity of everything was indeed Freya’s own wish, but it was most likely under Odin’s influence, with a high probability." Catherine stated: "So, it’s not wrong to say this idea came from the Chairman. But why did the Chairman want this?"
"To avoid being targeted?" Lina speculated: "Less people means smaller target, less likely to be attacked."
"Do you really think a convoy on the road would be less of a target?" Catherine refuted: "A wedding train should at least consist of a convoy. No matter how few people are there, the target wouldn’t be much smaller. So this reason doesn’t hold water."
"The fewer the people, the earlier the team can set out." Pannis replied: "The wedding probably won’t be after a month."
"Exactly, that’s just what I was about to say." Catherine said: "The formal wedding is three months later, there is only a simple ceremony one month from now. This ceremony was added upon the Chairman’s special request. But why would the Chairman want that?"
"I can only think of one reason." Pannis analysed: "To disrupt the enemy’s steps, interfere with their plans, and make a quick battle before they can react."
"Who is this ’enemy’?" Lina asked: "The threatening letter?"
"It’s likely the threatening letter." Pannis nodded: "We can’t verify when the threatening letter was received from Odin now. But I estimate his request for the simple ceremony to take place one month later was made shortly after receiving the threat."
"But there’s something illogical about simplifying the team." Catherine pondered: "If the threat letter is real and there’s indeed someone targeting the convoy, logically, a large number of city guards should be dispatched for protection. Why would they cut back instead? Moreover, as the city lord’s daughter, a wedding party of less than fifty and less than thirty guards seem too few, no matter what. Even if there’s a time constraint, organizing a wedding party of over a hundred is a simple task. Why didn’t the Chairman do it?"
"I got it." Vivian clapped her hand, realizing she was being too loud, she quickly lowered her voice: "By reducing the team, there’s probably another meaning. The chairman was afraid of moles paid off by the enemy mixing into the wedding party. So, only the most trust-worthy people were selected."
"But this doesn’t explain why the number of guards was reduced instead of increased." Catherine voiced her doubt: "This point is very strange, considering the Chairman’s doting on Freya, he wouldn’t let her take any risks."
"Unless he has certain restrictions on his side, and is certain that Freya won’t face any dangers." Pannis suddenly realized: "He probably knows the sender of the threatening letter very well, and is sure that even if the sender tries to obstruct them, they won’t harm Freya, he is very very sure."
"Kara! Kara Haines." The girls simultaneously realized and looked at each other: "Things are starting to seem more and more like a clumsy romance novel. Could it be a story of two young lovers and an opposing demon king father? This is truly too interesting." (To be continued.
