Yes, none of these existed.
The cave was large and was divided into three sections - inner, middle, and outer. Each was filled with various objects, but none carried the imagined treasures that should have filled the entire cave.
The first chamber was lined with all kinds of knight armor adjoined to matching weaponry. Half of the inner space was orderly stacked with bundles of soldier’s leather armors, while the other half had bundles of standard long swords and shield. The number of weapons and armors was staggering, and if roughly estimated, could arm an army of about 500 soldiers. The seven centuries spent inside this cave had left traces of time. The thick leather armor had long rotted into mud, and the metallic armor and weapons had been riddled with holes caused by rusting. Any small touch would leave a mark of destruction on the armor.
The second chamber housed dozens of large wooden boxes, most of which had rotted away, revealing the contents inside. Each box was filled to the brim with magic scrolls. The dozens of boxes held at least tens of thousands of different kinds of scrolls. Most were lower-level magic, but they contained most of the commonly used magic in large battles. With these scrolls, one could completely reverse the tide in a medium-scale battle. But seven centuries had passed and the once magical scrolls had turned to waste paper. The magic power once condensed on the scrolls had slowly dissipated over time, losing all their exceptional properties.
The third chamber was the smallest and unlike the previous two. Along the cave walls were metal shelves, displaying uniformly sized, small metal boxes. Inside these boxes were neatly arranged potions of various sorts—ranging from restorative potions that restore life, to Vitality Recovery Potion that restores mana, to speed potions that enhance speed and reaction abilities, to strength potions that enhance muscle strength, to the Explosion Potion that can create a ten-square-meter explosion, and to the gas potion that creates a ten-square-meter range of toxic gas. Be it offensive, defensive, or auxiliary, most of the frequently-used war potions could be found here. Of course, like the previous two chambers, due to time, these potions exposed to room temperature had completely lost their effectiveness, turning into useless waste water.
Only a single shelf held items not kept inside a box but were directly exposed. These objects, valueless and ambiguous in purpose, were carelessly piled up in a corner, letting dust coat them all over.
"Where’s the money, where’s it?" Catherine’s eyes were vacant, and her voice trembled as she repeated, "What are these? Where’s my money? Where are the promised pearls and jewels? Where’s the promised pile of coins? Where’s the promised accumulated wealth of generations of a kingdom? This mustn’t be real. It’s an illusion, yes, yes, illusions, I need to wake up, wake up now."
Although Lina too looked despondent, hearing Catherine’s words, her immediate reaction was to take a few steps back and sidelong glance at Catherine, "I’m warning you, big sister. If you dare to strangle me over this, I’ll never forgive you!"
"Why? Why did it turn out this way?" Catherine finally came back from her stupor and asked Lina despairingly, "It should be treasures, why did they turn into these, why?"
"Even if you ask me, I can’t provide an answer." Lina said helplessly, "Who knows what the people of Naren Kingdom thought hundreds of years ago? Why would they put such things here? Was it for the restoration of their nation?"
"Waah," Catherine suddenly clinged to Lina and began to weep loudly, "My money, I don’t want these, I want my money, wu wu wu... money, there must be other caves here, the money must be still hidden there. Pannis, let’s look for it thoroughly."
"Face the reality," Pannis said while patting Catherine’s shoulder with a bitter smile, "There are no other entrances in here. We have been through it all the way down. There are certainly no hidden entrances. Believe in a professional explorer’s judgment."
"Elrad, Elrad, why is the money..." Catherine still wouldn’t give up, intending to ask Elrad, only to be startled to find something wrong with him, "What’s wrong with him?"
Ever since Elrad had embarked into the cave and strolled through the three chambers one by one, he had stood motionless. At the beginning, no one had noticed him, but they were all taken aback when they eventually did. Two trails of blood were running down his black, thin face, originating from the corners of his eyes.
Elrad was staring fixedly at everything inside the cave. There was an expression of terror on his face, his eyes stared widely to the point where the corners of his eyes had been torn from the force. Upon closer observation, one could see that every muscle on his face was twitching. No, one could even say that every muscle throughout his body was twitching and shaking. His teeth were clenched so hard that in the quiet, one could hear the grinding sounds they made.
"Is he... okay?" Even with the girls’ experience, they were frightened by Elrad’s expression and instinctively huddled closer to Pannis. Catherine asked in a low voice, "His reaction... is even more exaggerated than mine."
"Hahahaha!" Suddenly, Elrad broke into a mad laughter, "So it’s just these, hahaha, three generations, fifty years of time, so it was just for these garbage, hahahaha."
"Hahahaha! These all belong to me, they all belong to me. None of you are allowed to snatch them. No, no, no, the treasures must be hidden among these garbage. I have to find them. I have to find them," said Elrad laughing madly. Suddenly, he lunged towards a box full of potions and embraced it in his arms. Randomly opening a potion, he poured it directly into his mouth, "Gulp, gulp, hahahaha, it’s not in this bottle, it must be in that one. My treasures, don’t hide anymore. Come out, you belong to me, just to me."
"Has he gone mad?" The scared Catherine even forgot to cry and asked in surprise, "Why is he drinking that?"
"Hmm, fifty years, three generations’ effort, suddenly turned into a joke," Pannis shrugged his shoulders without clearly agreeing or disagreeing, "Facing such a blow, it’s understandable that some can’t bear it."
"Who says, in my family also..." Catherine thought for a moment, but did not continue, instead shaking her head: "Forget it, this topic is too heavy. But I still don’t understand why there is only such a pile of things here."
"Hahaha, treasures, treasures." Elrad hugged a few potions, his face full of happy intoxication, carefully searching in each box, the crystal bottles holding potions continuously falling to the ground, making a crisp sound: "They’re all mine, hahaha, mine, mine, hahaha."
"If I were to guess, this place might have been used to store wealth before." Pannis pondered: "But remember the history of the Naren Kingdom? The latter period, due to the research of the institute, had drained the national treasury, forcing the last King of Naren to use the treasures here. As for the items here, perhaps they are their last stockpiled military supplies, intending to use these supplies to find an opportunity to restore the nation, but unfortunately, they were never used."
"Is that so?" Catherine sighed dejectedly, saying in a pained voice: "So, our time this month has been completely wasted?"
"Hey, you guys come and take a look." Vivian, who had been engrossed in the shelves of scattered curiosities since she entered, suddenly said: "Have a look at this thing."
"What’s up? Huh?" Lina was the first one to run over, just as she reached, she let out a surprised exclamation: "This one isn’t rusted."
Most of the objects on the shelf had either decayed or oxidized, turning into a pile of useless waste, but only one silver metallic object was still maintaining its original luster as if time had left no change on it. The cylinder was about ten centimeters long and about three centimeters in diameter. The surface was smooth and warm to the touch, but the texture was extremely hard, and no deformation could be caused by a forceful bend.
"Ha, this has become interesting." Pannis stroked his chin, baring a grin: "Perhaps we’ve stumbled upon a treasure. Just relying on the potential value hidden behind this thing, I fear it wouldn’t be lower than the anticipated treasure hoard of the Naren Kingdom."
"You know what this is? Have you seen it before?" Catherine asked in confusion: "It just looks like a metal rod."
"I indeed have a guess at what it is." Pannis nodded: "Vivian should have also guessed it, right? Although we have never seen this object, I think we all have seen something of the same kind."
"What is it? Don’t keep us hanging." Catherine grumbled, suddenly pausing and scanning around: "Where is Elrad?"
Elrad’s maniacal laughter and the sound of him knocking down metal objects still echoed in the cave but they could not see Elrad anywhere.
"Um, he seems to have run to the outer layer to rummage for those armors." Lina said: "Sound seems to be coming from over there."
"Let’s go and check it out. We’ll come back soon." Catherine furrowed her brow, speaking seriously: "We can’t let him run around. Even if he’s gone mad, I need to bring him back to Dora."
The group held up a goblin illuminator and walked out following the three-layer cave. When they reached the outermost cave, they only saw heaps of scattered armors lying all-around but no sign of Elrad, while his hysterical laughter still echoed from the corridor outside the door.
"He actually ran so far in the dark." Catherine shook her head: "Should we commend this mad energy?"
"Perhaps." Pannis said with some worry: "Let’s hurry up and check, before he destroys the exit door."
Just as they turned the corner leading to the exit, they saw Elrad illuminated by the light. His eyes were blood-red, his lips bitten through by him, baring his bloody teeth, his right hand raised above his head, standing at the end of the exit passage thirty meters away, staring at them maliciously and laughing manically.
"It’s all you, all of you did it, and you stole my treasure." Elrad said crazily: "You won’t let me have the treasure, then none of you will have it, let’s all die together."
With that, Elrad pulled downwards with his right hand, pulling on a rope that he had tied to a ring above his head at some point.
"Not good." All of them keenly sensed the surroundings being instantly flooded with destructive energy, Pannis’s face changed drastically, shouting loudly: "Vivian, quickly!"
"Let’s go." Vivian clapped her hands, activating a backup measure that had been ready for quite some time.
