"So this is the final barricade you mentioned, Elrad?" Five people were standing in front of a strange door, observing the ultimate safeguard. Along the way, they had passed by the fork of which Elrad had spoken. Indeed, the end of this fork only led to a one-way Teleportation Array. Unlike the old-fashioned portals at entrances, this was a modern array. Vivian cautiously tested it and was able to determine that the array led to the surface around sixty to seventy kilometers away, theoretically posing no threat.
After confirming their escape route, the five finally arrived at the end of the tunnel, on the outside of the door leading to the treasure. It was exactly just a door — a metal door, to be precise, not unlike those you’d find inside the house, which appeared quite odd in this narrow passageway.
"It really is just a ’door’, huh." Lina wanted to reach and touch the metal door but hesitated, afraid of triggering any peculiar trap. "Can I touch it randomly?"
Pannis squinted his eyes and meticulously examined the door from all sides before nodding, "It seems safe to me, just don’t press too hard."
"Yeah, you can touch it." Vivian took out several small tools and scanned the vicinity of the door with the help of different devices, "There are no touch-activated magic traps on the door or the walls."
"Are they really that kind?" Lina sneered, making a gesture on the door without daring to press, "I’ve been frightened by the previous two traps. I haven’t seen them for myself, but just hearing the explanations makes it clear that the person who designed them must be some twisted individual, setting traps as sinister as possible. Maybe if I touch it, I’ll instantly... Hey Pannis, you idiot, I’ll kill you!"
Pannis only lightly pushed Lina, causing her hand to inadvertently touch the metal door. Seeing Lina turn around with fiery eyes, he immediately pulled a serious expression and looked at Lina with innocent eyes, "What? Why do you suddenly want to kill me?"
"Both of you, shut it." Catherine punched Pannis on the head, barking, "Stop messing around. Behave and get the work done. If you dare delay me from seeing my money, I’ll be cooking for a whole month upon returning home."
"Yes, ma’am." Pannis and Lina saluted in unison, promptly switching to a serious demeanor. However, Catherine paid no attention to their act, she had already gone back to her previous state. Her eyes dreamy, nostrils subtly quivering, lips slightly open. She held her arms in front of her chest, propping her cheek on her upright right palm. A blush spread across her face, and a deep, satisfied smile hung on her lips.
"How long is she going to keep this up?" Pannis nudged Lina with his elbow, "She’s been like this the whole way."
"Probably until she sees the treasure." Lina shrugged helplessly, "But it’s okay, she’ll snap back at the first sign of danger."
"Let’s hope so. Alright, I need to get to work." Pannis took out various tools, put them into his pocket, and took one out to stick on his ear. He tilted his head, pressing the other end of the tool against the rock wall, his eyes half-closed, tapping the wall with his hand seemingly aimlessly.
"Found it." Vivian announced, though her face showed none of the joy one might expect.
"What’s with that expression?" Lina put her head over Vivian’s shoulder and asked, "If you’ve found it, why aren’t you happy?"
"I can’t bring myself to be." Vivian replied with a frown, "It was too simple. The trap was practically laid out in plain sight. Anyone with a little bit of magic knowledge could see through it."
"That is strange." Lina hesitated for a moment before nodding, "Based on the previous two traps and the method to open the door, the person who set these traps is skilled in using trickery. It wouldn’t make sense for things to suddenly become simple here."
"Yes, I was considering this too. That’s why I can’t bring myself to be happy." Vivian sighed, "This means the obvious trap probably serves as a smokescreen. Finding the real trap will be troublesome."
"Heh heh, seems like a lot of work. I’m afraid I won’t be much help." Lina stuck her tongue out, cupped her hands together in appeal, and chuckled, "And Pannis, leave it to you two."
"I’m on it." Pannis moved around the wall with his body plastered against it, "The more complex the trap, the greater the need for an extensive energy supply system. So while Vivian is looking for the trap from the front, I’m looking for a breakthrough from the side, that is, through the energy supply system."
"Sounds like it’s going to be complicated." said Lina, "Is trap detection really this troublesome?"
"Shush, quit talking. We need to concentrate." Pannis raised a finger to his lips and replied in a low voice, "You should go and... well, never mind, just go have a chat with Elrad. Make sure he doesn’t cause trouble at the critical moment. We can’t trust him too much, even if he seems harmless now."
"Don’t worry, I’m prepared." Lina also lowered her voice, "I’ll keep an eye on him."
"Okay, let’s get to work." After Lina left, Pannis turned to Vivian, "How are things on your end?"
"I’ve got some ideas. Just need to verify and test." Vivian replied, "What about you?"
"I’ve just found an energy transfer node." Pannis answered, "But my ability to detect mana in this aspect is a bit weak. I will try to trace the node."
Both of them fell silent. Vivian pressed her face against the metal door again, using the sensory nerve in her skin to track the energy flow underneath the metal. Usually when she used her hands to "touch" and sense objects, it was for the sake of appearances while she used her magic to make contact. But when it came to meticulous detection, she needed to use her skin for actual touch. Vivian’s clean face rubbed against the coarse door, smudging her face with dust. But she didn’t mind at all. When necessary, she even extended her tongue to touch the door, tracing and validating the source with the most sensitive part of her skin.
"Here." Pannis lay at the base of the rock wall next to the metal door, waving Vivian over: "Come take a look."
"As expected, it’s here." Vivian meticulously controlled her mana to test it out: "Very cunning. It’s linked to the first trap, so once the first trap is disarmed, this second trap will take over. If we hadn’t noticed, once the door was opened..."
"Could there be a third one?" Pannis, with his hand on his chin, pondered: "Just these two, doesn’t quite match the style of the designer here, what if there’s a third one?"
"I doubt it. The more complex the linked system, the easier it is for things to go wrong. Even with today’s technology, many times setting up a three-linked system is not as good as not setting one up. Let alone seven hundred years ago." Vivian adjusted the soft hat on her head, pacing and saying, "But, just to be safe, shall we look again?"
"Let’s look again, not in a hurry to waste tenish minutes." Pannis nodded: "Otherwise, if anything goes wrong, it’ll be too late to cry."
Soon, the two returned to their previous state, huddling against the wall in odd positions, using their own energy to explore minutely, inch by inch. In the meantime, Lina came over for a look, saw that the two didn’t seem to be making any progress, and had to retreat again.
"Hey, hey, Pannis, come here for a moment. I don’t know if it’s my illusion." Vivian said: "I always feel that there is an elusive mana channel at this node."
"Here?" Pannis came over and tapped the rock wall: "Elusive, huh?"
"Yes, so I’m not sure." Vivian nibbled her lip, saying dejectedly: "I think it should exist."
"It certainly does." Pannis took his hand off the wall and pointed at the node’s location: "I would have overlooked it if you hadn’t mentioned it. It’s too weak, so feeble that it can’t play any role at all. Such a mana channel can’t play a supporting role."
"No, it can make a difference." Vivian’s eyes suddenly lit up, and she got excited: "I get it. The purpose of this mana channel is to notify the existence of the third trap."
"Oh!" Pannis also realized: "In other words, once the energy transfer stops in this mana channel, whether or not anyone has activated it, the third trap will immediately detonate?"
"Exactly." Vivian clapped her hands excitedly, smiling and saying: "That matches the cunningness of the builder here. One link hits another link; if any link gets overlooked, a tragedy will occur just like the linked traps in the Tempest Corridor."
"Hmm." Pannis agreed: "However, I have a feeling that the third trap is inside the passageway. So, are you sure you can break the trap inside through the wall by controlling the energy?"
"Are you asking me?" Vivian chuckled and raised her chin: "What a joke. You’re standing before a genius among geniuses, and you dare to ask me if I’m sure? Hmm, hmmm. Can I interpret your question as underestimating me?"
"So, you two have figured out a way." Hearing their conversation, Catherine surprisingly led the way: "It seems that there is no problem."
"Ah, you’ve recovered, Sis?" Vivian expressed surprise: "I thought..."
"What recovery?" Catherine touched her slightly flushed cheeks, and said somewhat embarrassingly: "I was just a little absent-minded, just a little, no need to recover. Annoying, don’t change the subject, I’m asking you guys, did you find a solution?"
"Yes, we’ve found it." Vivian was elated, she animatedly narrated the process of finding the traps to the three: "So, now as long as I break them down one by one, starting with the third trap, we can get the treasure, hahaha."
"This feels somewhat wrong to me." Catherine asked with doubt: "What if the heir of the Naren Kingdom is not familiar with trap disassembly? And coincidentally, there’s no one in his followers skilled in this area, what then?"
Pannis and Vivian were stunned, facing each other, and after a long stare, they suddenly gathered at the side of the door, erupting in a burst of laughter after a few seconds.
"Indeed, sometimes, experts rack their brains, exploring and discussing through various methods. But it’s not as useful as a layman’s passing comment." Vivian leaned against the wall, laughing heartily: "Sis, I really admire you."
"What’s wrong?" Catherine asked, slightly baffled: "Did I say something wrong?"
"Nothing wrong, certainly not wrong." Pannis also laughed heartily, clutching his stomach: "I have a question for you. What is the meaning of a door?"
"Uh, this... is it a philosophical question?" Catherine blankly answered: "Meaning? I really don’t know about that."
"The meaning of a door is to be opened." As he spoke, Pannis pushed hard, opening the metal door.
