Chasms of unfathomable depths suddenly appeared on the earth, commonly referred to as Earth’s Scar. For the past few hundred years, scholars have been constantly studying Earth’s Scar but, unfortunately, this research often yielded nothing. People didn’t even fully understand what caused the Earth’s Scar.
Some scholars believed that the Earth’s Scar was formed as underground rivers eroded the limestone underneath the earth to form subterranean hollows, which collapsed over time due to the weight of the rock layers above. The collapsed rocks were then slowly carried away by the underground river, eventually forming the Earth’s Scar. This theory was widely accepted among scholars initially, until the entry of Dwarf scholars into the research.
The first thing the Dwarf scholars did after joining was to overturn this mainstream view. They listed four locations with large hidden pits. These four ancient Earth’s Scars did not have limestone inside as previously imagined, and three of them did not have any underground rivers within a 500-meter radius. The only pit with a river had actually re-routed after the pit appeared. The presence of these four pits pushed the research progress on Earth’s Scar back to its initial stage, leaving scholars to restart all over again.
The Earth’s Scar cluster within the Shining Forest has less depth, smaller range, and fewer number; it was considered unnecessary for study in the eyes of scholars. In fact, it was indeed like that - no plants, no animals, no noteworthy findings, just seven simple pits. However, one of these pits concealed a kingdom’s years of accumulated treasure - an occurrence hardly anyone would’ve thought of.
"Indeed, these two pits all meet the conditions we envisioned." Sitting at the bottom of the fifth pit, Vivian looked up at the sky, knees drawn to her chest, silently tracing the trajectory of the moon in her mind. "It seems there really should be a third condition."
"Hey, have you all had a good look?" Catherine’s head poked out from the top of the pit, shouting down to the others, "Once you’ve had enough, I’ll pull you up."
"Big sister, can you wait a bit?" Vivian called out with all her might, "We still need some time, we’ll call you with the Resonance Crystal when we’re ready."
"Beware of falling rocks over your heads." Catherine advised uneasily, "Don’t stay too long. If there’s a difficult problem, come up, and we’ll discuss."
"I know, I know, Granny Catherine." Vivian waved impatiently, "We’re starting to research, bye."
"The fact that she nags is also because she cares about you." Pannis said, "Of course, it might also be part of her nature."
"I know, I’m actually quite happy when she nags at me, hehe." Vivian laughed lightly, covering her mouth. "Big sister also knows that when I tease her like that, it’s only a joke and she won’t take it seriously. Okay, okay, hurry up and bring out the map, we need to research it well."
"Here it is." Pannis found a flat surface and spread out the map that they almost had committed to memory: "I think there must be a third clue. Without a third clue, we can’t possibly find the entrance to the treasure chamber."
The map was actually not complicated. It was like a sketched cross-section. The pits’ four walls were represented by straight lines, and the pit’s bottom simply drawn as near to a perfect circle. At the top of the pit, three moons peeked in, their light shedding inwards. The center of the pit depicted a puddle of clear water, reflecting the moons in the sky.
"Wait up." Vivian suddenly grabbed Pannis’ sleeve, "It’s this puddle of water."
"Hmm, the water?" Pannis touched his chin, nodding thoughtfully, "There’s indeed a possibility."
"Right? Aside from the clues we’ve found," Vivian’s eyes shone as she danced with excitement, "the only thing that could possibly hide a clue is the puddle. I suspect that we might need to make a puddle within the outlined range and then observe whether we can reflect the image in the map."
Without uttering a word, Pannis stared at the sky, lost in thought, pacing back and forth over the center of the pit, roughly calculating the positions in his mind.
"That’s not right." Vivian gesticulated and said, "A rough calculation won’t do, we need a very precise location. If I didn’t guess wrong, even a tiny error is inacceptable."
"Then it’s troublesome, there’s a lot of work to do." Pannis sighed in distress, "Firstly, the ratio of height to diameter on the map is ten to three point eight seven five. The actual height of the pit wall here is one hundred seventeen meters, the average diameter is about forty-six meters, so the ratio should be ten to three point nine three. Taking into consideration the accumulation of sand and dust over seven hundred years, this result falls within the acceptable range. Therefore, using the diameter of forty-six meters and the ratio of ten to three point eight seven five to extrapolate, the height in the past should be one hundred eighteen point seven meters, which means, we need to dig nearly two meters deep to restore the height of the puddle of that time."
"Wait, wait." Vivian suddenly grabbed Pannis’ collar, cheering loudly, "I understand, I finally understand."
"What do you understand?" Pannis sneaked a wipe at his brow, full of cold sweat, and asked tentatively, "Are you sure you’re normal right now?"
"Nonsense." Vivian rolled her eyes at Pannis, started looking up and walked in circles around the base of the pit. While walking, she frequently turned her head to gaze at the moon’s position in her imagination. After several rounds, she clapped her hands, pointed at the wall in front of her, and said, "Come help me. Carry me up about twenty or thirty meters. Go slowly, I need to take a good look at the walls."
’"Here?" After observing the wall surface for a moment, Pannis ensured there were sufficient support points for climbing, then he carried Vivian on his back, leapt high off the ground and began his ascent.
"Go slow around here." Vivian suddenly shouted, "Go slow, go slow. I want to look carefully."
"Oh, grand lady mage." Pannis grumbles with a bitter smile, "The slower we go, the harder it gets, especially with me carrying someone."
"Stop, right here, stop." Vivian calls, patting Pannis’s shoulder, "Yes, it should be right here."
Pannis, as prepared, holds onto the crevices with one hand, while the other hand takes out two iron spikes and sticks them into the crevices for support. His hands clenched onto the spikes and his feet against the protrusions of the rock wall, he manages to stay suspended mid-air, conveniently carrying Vivian on his shoulder.
"I believe my hypothesis is correct." Vivian’s eyes practically glued to the rock wall, she stares at the barren surface for a few minutes before nodding in satisfaction, "Pannis, you’re the professional here. Take a look at this and tell me if there are traces of human intervention."
"Human intervention?" Pannis propels himself upwards to the height where Vivian was originally, and after a few seconds confidently declares, "Yes, there are indeed traces of human intervention, but only a very small area shows these signs, nowhere else."
"Phew, then we’re right." Vivian breathes out a sigh of relief, patting Pannis’s arm, "Good job, we can go down now."
After setting Vivian down safely, Pannis anxiously asks, "How did you find that spot?"
"Simple." Vivian replies, "Because I figured out their entrance control method and activation mechanism."
"You managed to guess that?" Pannis glances at the confirmed spot on the rock wall and realizes, "Ah, it’s the light reflection."
"Yes, light reflection." Vivian responds, bubbling with excitement, "The moonlight of the Azure Moon is reflected onto the target point via the water surface. Given that it’s the Magical Tide Night, the reflection not only contains the moonlight, but also the potent active magical energy. This energy will then be conveyed to the control device hidden behind the rock wall, thereby activating the device."
"And then through this subtly activated control switch." Pannis naturally follows up, "It controls the real gate switch, triggering the stored energy, thereby making the gate appear?"
"Exactly." Vivian claps her hands in laughter, "I really am a genius, finding the key point was such a piece of cake."
"So, dear genius lady, could you please explain this to us ordinary folks in a clearer manner?"
"Oh my God! You scared me!" A voice suddenly sounds from behind Vivian, startling her, "Big sister Lina, when did you two get down here?"
"When did we?" Lina taps her mouth, a smirk playing on her lips, "Just a little after a certain someone shrieked like her tail had been stepped on."
"And then we saw two idiots climbing the rock wall without any protection." Catherine comments dryly, "Did you think you were relatives of rock lizards? Or do you fancy yourselves bat rats who can glide down cliffs?"
"My bad." Pannis admits immediately, "Won’t dare do it again."
"Yeah yeah, never again." Vivian nods hurriedly as well, a pitiful expression on her face.
"I’m really tired of you two." Catherine rubs her temple in exasperation, "No use talking to you when you both are together, fine, just remember to be careful next time. So, have we successfully confirmed the location for the entrance?"
"Not quite confirmed yet." Vivian immediately discards the pitiful act she was putting on, shaking her head, "We’ve only preliminarily confirmed, we still need further verification. After all, we must be fully prepared."
"How to verify?" Catherine probes.
"Just like what Pannis said before, we first need to determine the central point and precise boundaries of the pool shown in the map. Then we dig a hole more than one-point-seven meters deep so the water level stays one-point-seven meters below. Then, we check if the pool can form the reflection as shown in the plan, and calculate if the moonlight can accurately reflect onto the target point. After all these, we need to go to another suspected target pit, and repeat the same test, ensuring no room for errors."
"That sounds so troublesome," Lina complains, "More digging again."
"We have no choice. We have some work to do for the next few days." Vivian shrugs. She won’t be doing any of the laborious tasks, and so she isn’t stressed at all, "Gear up for the treasure, girl, haha."
