Chapter 213: Chapter 67 Vivian_2
"With this magic, it makes it a lot easier for me to continue learning magic. I can use Mage’s Hand to flip and replace books, no longer like before, where I needed someone to read to me."
"In this way, I spend each day delving into various magical theories. I initially thought that I would continue this way, becoming a scholar purely devoted to the study of magical theory, a scholar trapped in paralysis. However, I suddenly discovered a type of magic."
"Ah, no wonder, that would explain it. I think I know what magic you found." Pannis sighed, "Puppeteer Magic, right?"
"Yes, Puppet Control Magic." Vivian said with a smile, "I’ve discovered this magic that has long been swept into the trash heap."
"So," Pannis said with disbelief, "you use Puppet Control Magic to control yourself?"
"I’m a great puppeteer, aren’t I?" Vivian’s smile was complicated. It had no movement, but her whole body slowly stood up straight. Her hands and feet, like a real puppet, made a few twisted movements as if in a awkward puppet show, "It’s actually far from that simple."
"First, I used condensed mana threads through some of the muscles in my neck, then tried to control the muscles through the mana threads. Half a year later, I succeeded and at nearly fifteen, I finally spoke my first sentence again."
"Afterwards, I regained control of another part of my body." Vivian’s face suddenly turned red, her eyes fluttering as she said, "Allowing me to control...so as not to...uh, never mind, let’s not talk about that."
"If that’s the case, I remember there were a few times..." Pannis’ smile suddenly turned awkward, "You had a few mana fluctuations, caused by crystal energy backlashes. At that time, you wouldn’t have..."
"Ha ha ha, I was well prepared." Vivian covered her mouth and laughed in response, "You must know that for a girl, having that kind of problem in public is worse than committing suicide. So, to prevent an unexpected mana fluctuation from causing that situation, I prepared several backups, it will absolutely not be as you think. Moreover, how dare you immediately think of those things, you pervert."
"Hey, it was you who brought it up first." Pannis rolled his eyes, "But, since you can simulate nerves by controlling the body through mana threads, why do you still need to use Puppeteer Magic?"
"I once thought of replacing all my nerves with mana threads, but later found out, it’s impossible." Vivian sighed, "It’s simple to control a few muscles, especially those of singular function, but controlling the muscles of limbs and torso to perform an action, even a simple muscle action, requires hundreds of times more energy to control. It’s impossible for a normal person to do, so I gave up on this impossible idea."
"So instead, you pursued Puppeteer Magic?" Pannis nodded, "Using Puppeteer Magic to control the body is a method, but doing so can atrophy and degrade most muscles."
"Exactly like me now." For the first time, Vivian took off her gloves in front of Pannis. The hand under the gloves was skin and bones, pale and saggy. The muscles and fats which should have been supporting between skin and bones are almost non-existent: "Just like a monster."
"Control oneself with puppet control magic is not simple." Vivian frowned as if recalling the difficulties back then, "I didn’t tell Catherine that I was secretly studying this spell during my free time studying magic knowledge for many years. It wasn’t until I was nineteen, that for the first time, I managed to stand again without the aid of anyone. Catherine was completely stunned when she saw me. I remember I was clumsy, like a clown puppet, my movements exaggerated and distorted. But even so, I cried happy tears for three whole days."
"Then, I spent the whole year making myself proficient in controlling my body, so that others could not see any signs of manipulation in my movements."
"No wonder you have headaches and they only occur during adventures" Pannis said with a bitter smile, "As I thought, you were over-exerting yourself."
"Yes, if I only use magic for five or six hours a day, it’s no problem for my overall vitality, sleeping for a night can replenish it. But if it’s more than six hours, one night’s sleep is not enough to restore the energy spent. During adventures, often continuing for tens of days, each day I need to continuously use magic for eight to ten hours, it becomes overwhelming. So, generally when adventures exceed fifteen days without substantial rest in between, my headaches start to frequently occur at night. But, I’ve gotten used to it."
"However, your illness doesn’t affect your life, right?" Pannis suddenly felt curious, "So why do Catherine and Lina seem..."
"It doesn’t affect me now." Vivian sighed, revealing a bitter smile, "But, the disease is worsening."
"What?" Pannis widened his eyes in disbelief, "It can get worse?"
"Originally, the nerves damaged by my disease were only ones that actively control muscle movement, while some passive actions, like breathing, heartbeat, digestion, weren’t affected. However, after the disease worsens, it won’t be like that. You can imagine, when I need to control my breathing and heartbeat, what will happen after I fall asleep?"
Pannis clenched his fists and couldn’t say a word.
"Don’t worry, I’ve come to terms with it." Vivian took off her soft hat and covered her face, hiding her current expression, "During those thirteen years I was bedridden, especially after the death of my parents, I was always afraid, afraid that I would be forgotten in one corner, quietly passing away, unnoticed even after death. Quietly decaying into white bones, until many years later when someone would find out. So, I’m not afraid of dying, I’m just afraid of being forgotten. As long as you can promise me that you won’t forget me after I die, I’ll be satisfied."
"I... I don’t want to promise that I will definitely find a treatment for your illness, this kind of promise isn’t realistic, because I don’t have any ideas at present." Pannis lowered his eyes, once again feeling powerless for the second time in a hundred years, just like the feeling when he faced the Divine Soul back then. This familiar feeling made his heart feel incredibly painful, "But, I promise that I will do my best to find a cure for you. Trust me, using my past experience and connections, there might be hope. If Odin and Antuin couldn’t find a solution, it doesn’t mean I won’t."
"Ha, then I’ll thank you in advance." Vivian didn’t take it seriously, she closed her eyes and said, "Your massage was very effective, my head doesn’t hurt anymore, I’m going to take a nap."
"Sleep." Pannis allowed Vivian to continue lying sideways on his lap. He gently patted her back like coaxing a child, allowing Vivian to quickly enter the world of dreams.
