"Stay calm, cool." The five survivors of the Blue Coral Adventure Team got a shock when Catherine and Pannis rushed out. Everyone rose to their feet and drew their weapons. The four Silver Rank mercenaries were also on edge. Only Dora seemed to understand the understanding between Pannis and the girls. She sat down calmly and, like Lina and Vivian, casually dismissed her team, "Why are you guys so tense? Just sit down."
"Yes, stay cool." After checking her timer, Vivian casually flipped her skewer over the fire pit like Pannis had done, then said leisurely, "Pannis, as an explorer, would alert us if we needed to be on guard. But since he didn’t warn us before he and Catherine rushed out, there’s no need for us to worry. Everyone, just continue with dinner."
The others didn’t seem to fully comprehend the trust between Pannis and the girls. Yet, observing their laid-back demeanor, they finally managed to calm down and return to their spots beside the fire. Still, they couldn’t help but peek towards the entrance of the valley, trying futilely to see through the gloaming to what was happening outside.
A few minutes later, footsteps echoed from the entrance. Both Pannis and Catherine returned with serious expressions on their faces.
"Just like yesterday, nothing?" By the fire pit, Lina raised her head from her book, "Nobody there?"
"Sort of someone there." Pannis’s right hand was tight, "But they slipped away. It’s not the same person as yesterday. Different scent."
"Was he able to escape even though you two worked together?" Dora asked in surprise, "That’s just incredible."
"He widened the gap through a Dimensional Door then escaped using Teleportation Magic. There’s no trace of a Magic Array." Pannis sat down again and answered, "The Dimensional Door was instantaneous, and the Teleportation Magic... left no residual Magic Array."
Everyone became silent. Apart from the shy baby octopus, everyone understood the significance of Pannis’ emphasis. In the world of magic, Dimensional Door, that short-distance space shifting magic, was known to most Upper Rank Mages. However, instantaneous casting in an actual fight could only be achieved by Mages who had advanced to Legendary Rank. Likewise, Teleportation Magic, that long-distance space shifting magic, typically involved Upper Rank Mages utilizing a physical magic array. After teleportation, physical Magic Array would always remain behind. Nevertheless, a Legendary or higher rank Mage could imprint a Magic Array using mana without leaving a trace afterward.
"Heh heh, things are getting very interesting," Dora broke into laughter, "Are you saying that two parties are following us, and one of them is a Legendary Rank Mage?"
"There are two people, not necessarily two parties. Maybe they’re together, just each acting alone to monitor us." Pannis corrected, "As for the person who was trailing us yesterday, I find it hard to believe that anyone could follow us all day without me noticing."
"Well, you might be right." Dora agreed, "But, a Legendary Rank... Heh heh. We have five Gold Ranks here, one Upper, three Middle, and one Lower. If a fight breaks out, it’ll be tough to stay alive."
"But they haven’t made a move." Catherine was a little frustrated," They don’t seem to want to attack us. Who are they and why are they following us?"
Pannis opened his mouth as though about to speak, but looking at Catherine, he dropped his gaze and began to flip the barbecue again without saying a thing.
"Tell me, Pannis." Catherine caught Pannis’s behavior. She stared at Pannis seriously, "Did you discover something that I missed? Does it affect me? Please, don’t worry about me and tell me what you’ve found."
"You need to stay calm, really calm." Pannis sighed, reminded her once, then extended his right hand, which had been balled into a tight fist, to reveal a piece of black robe, "This was on the arrow I had released, he escaped in time, but still left this behind."
Catherine took the piece of robe, touched, and observed it in the firelight. As she looked, her eyes grew from confused and nostalgic to strange and angry. When her anger reached its peak, Catherine seemed to have realized something, she grasped Pannis’s wrist tightly, her face became distorted, her lips quivered without speaking and she pleadedly stared at Pannis.
Pannis shook his head regretfully, forced a smile, and said, "I’m sorry, what you’re thinking about is correct. It’s very likely they’re the ones. Moreover, those people are probably ended up the same way."
Catherine shut her eyes with disappointment, took a deep breath, let go of Pannis’s wrist while trembling and was quiet for a moment. When she opened her eyes, they were cold and clear, "What a... pity."
