Chapter 1534: Chapter 320: Come Kill Me
"Danacus, the Deity proficient in manipulating souls, the master of deception, always seeks the vulnerabilities in his enemies’ hearts, then chips away at their defenses, striking directly at their souls—Danacus can craft plans over a century in advance, luring us into his world to use us for his own purposes. He can also deceive all of us, orchestrating events to unfold exactly as he wishes. Such a deity could not possibly be a fool," Pannis said with a sneer, "So I don’t believe for a second he doesn’t know the consequences of his actions. To think otherwise would be to insult the intelligence of a god. In other words, he is well aware of what his actions would lead to, and knows the price he would have to pay. Yet, knowing all this, he still" did these things, constantly making efforts to make his presence felt, continuously insisting that he is recovering, and that he might take over Nellie’s body at any moment. I can only conclude that every reaction from Nellie is exactly what he would have hoped for, such as, summoning me to kill her."
No one spoke; the ladies were all steeped in silence. Pannis’s thoughts, though strange, had to be admitted as reasonable; from a certain perspective, they could explain some of Danacus’s otherwise inexplicable actions.
"As the ancients once said, if every impossible reason is eliminated, and only one remains, that sole remaining reason, no matter how unbelievable it may be, is the correct answer," Pannis knew what the ladies were contemplating, and did not press them to immediately accept his speculation, simply folding his arms and standing aside, continuing leisurely, "I understand, this conjecture is indeed hard to believe, but only such thinking can explain the irrational actions of Danacus."
"Whether this reason is sufficient requires further thought," after a while, Denia finally lifted her head from her musings, breaking the surrounding silence, "But I think that you have more to say than just this; there must be other content. After all, this reason still falls short of convincing you that Danacus wanted you to attack him in order to reclaim the Hunting Arrow, so please continue, we are all listening."
"Well, alright," Pannis nodded and continued, "The doubts about Danacus made me increasingly question his plan, but that only confirmed that he had another purpose in doing so, not that his purpose was for me to attack him. Therefore, I must be cautious, I must find out his true intentions, to not do something I’ll regret for the rest of my life."
"Caution is indeed a virtue," Denia nodded in agreement, "The more serious the matter, the more cautious we must always be. Only by being cautious in all things can we avoid making mistakes. Otherwise, regretting after the mistake is made is no use at all—it’s already too late."
"Exactly, that principle is absolutely correct; only by remaining cautious at all times can one have the leeway to deal with any sudden problems," In Flare’s eyes, Kyle, who had once inspired her complete trust, making her fall utterly for him, seemed to have returned, with his wise gaze, firm demeanor, and a voice full of confidence that reassured people. The majestic queen seemed to return to those past days, sitting by the warm fire at night, gently gazing at the love of her life, listening as he arranged the tasks for the next day. Those days were hard to find again, and for Flare, living with Kyle, walking hand-in-hand through the woods, and being buried together under the Companion Tree was the greatest happiness. The mature queen, of course, wouldn’t harbor such naïve expectations about revisiting the past, so when the scenes of bygone days unexpectedly reappeared before her eyes, her eyes even moistened with tears, her gaze gentle as she watched Pannis, who showed no hint of fear even under the scrutiny of the gods, "When one is full of doubts about something, one tends to find many questionable points that are usually overlooked. Of course, some are true doubts; others may just be an overreaction. Nevertheless, I believe I can still distinguish between the two."
"We believe so too," Denia said with a smile, "If it weren’t for the fact that you are almost certainly going to be entangled with the theocracy of the Grimreaper, Weston might have even wished to take you to his world after your death. Heh, I rarely hear him speak so highly of mortals."
"Thank you for the praise," Pannis replied with polite, moderate pleasure, absent any excess exhilaration, and bowed to Denia with his hand on his chest, expressing gratitude with the perfect gentleman’s etiquette, "To receive praise from you deities is my greatest honor. Unfortunately, I fear I will not be able to reciprocate the trust from the Deity of Wisdom."
"There’s no need for regret; he has been prepared for this. If everything goes well, the you of the future—whether inheriting the Power of Death or occupying the most important position in the death pantheon—will obviously not serve Weston," Denia said softly, "I hope we can get along well in the future. Heh, but that’s provided everything goes smoothly and the problems are resolved. So please, go on."
"As you wish, Lady Denia," Pannis nodded and continued, "The previous concerns can’t be taken as decisive factors, but we can look at what Danacus and his followers did after Nellie decided to summon me. In reality, they did nothing; they merely intensified the sacrifices, constantly making Nellie feel in crisis, living under the shadow of Danacus’s looming revival. The situation had changed from before; at that time, one might have thought that Danacus, having slept for hundreds of thousands of years, had grown dull-witted, unaware that his actions would cause such a violent reaction from Nellie, but then, they still continued to do so, which served no other purpose but to expedite Nellie’s execution of the plan. Especially after I entered the Door of Mist with the Hunting Arrow, they kept this up, hehe, once I freed my thoughts from Danacus’s interference, to me, their behavior was like dancing in front of me to attract my attention, while shouting ’Come hit me, come kill me.’"
