Chapter 1528: Chapter 314 The Traitor Morbis

"Unable to awake?" Denia murmured Pannis’s words a few times, a puzzled expression on her face, "But that deity did awaken smoothly."

"Did it really go smoothly?" Pannis retorted, "Lady Denia, can you provide a definite answer, stating that his awakening process went really smoothly?"

"I cannot, after all, these are each deity’s most private and most crucial secrets. The process he underwent, I could not possibly know in too much detail." Denia hesitated slightly, then shook her head with a wry smile, "So, I indeed cannot fulfill your request. However, judging from his demeanor at that time, it didn’t seem like he encountered any difficulties."

"Hmm?" Pannis raised his eyebrows unexpectedly and queried further, "Were you also present when he awakened?"

"I was not, but I just happened to be observing that place." Denia said, "So, by coincidence, I saw the entire process."

"Then, could you briefly describe the process?" Pannis’s expression showed nervousness mixed with anticipation, he clenched his fists and lowered his voice, "I know I should not delve into the secrets of a deceased, but now I can’t afford to worry about these concerns, I hope you can satisfy this request of mine."

"Well, there’s really nothing to worry about because the process was quite simple." Denia nodded in agreement, recalled briefly, and said, "It was a long time ago, during the end of the First Epoch, you know, at that time the deities and the Triclops were often engaged in battle, each winning some and losing some. That deity had previously fallen into a slumber due to an attack by a group of Triclops and, during the victor’s absorption of Divinity, he didn’t notice that the deity’s Divine Soul had quietly infiltrated his body and thus went to sleep. I didn’t witness this part myself; I learned about it later. What I saw was when he awakened, just as the victor was fighting with other deities, the deity suddenly awakened and quickly regained control over his body. However, he also paid a heavy price, was grievously injured by an opponent in battle, and nearly fell back into slumber."

"Wait, there are two issues here." Pannis suddenly raised his hand, interrupting Denia’s recollection, "First, can you detail the process more, did he regain control first, and then got injured by his opponent, or was he injured first and then regained control?"

"I don’t know that." Denia said with a bitter smile, "I mentioned, I only saw by chance, and not being on the scene, I could see him awakening from his slumber, reversing the absorption of the host’s soul, which was already quite difficult; it’s impossible to detail whether which happened first or last, which goes beyond the normal scope of understanding."

"I understand." Pannis narrowed his eyes and smiled, groping his chin, "Does everyone know about this?"

"No, not many people know. Although most know that he had once been in slumber, only I just happened to see that moment of awakening," Denia thought for a moment, uncertain, "Moreover, it’s been so long, many specific details are just unclear. Your questions leave me at a loss for answers."

"No matter, this is already enough." Pannis said unconcernedly, "Another thing, can I find out who this deity really is? I already have a guess in mind, but I still hope, Lady Denia, that you could confirm my suspicion. If nothing goes wrong, this person... is also a deity of the Death System, right?"

Pannis’s question made Denia’s complexion stiff and her aura turned from profound to sharp, clearly indicating that this guess made her realize that Pannis might indeed have touched the very core of the whole issue. Lady Denia, somewhat taken aback, looked at Pannis and hesitated before nodding, speaking in a low voice, "It seems your ideas might indeed be correct, as everything you’ve said about this deity is absolutely right; indeed, he was one of the deities from the initial Death System, a subordinate deity of Danacus, Morbis."

"The betrayer Morbis?" After the exclamation, Catherine covered her mouth with force, yet she could scarcely hide the surprise lingering in her eyes. This name was not unfamiliar to the girls; in order to understand their enemy, the girls had thoroughly researched the deities of the Grimreaper, and the name of the betrayer Morbis had appeared numerous times during the studies. This deity, known as the betrayer, had once been a subordinate god to Danacus, and during the end of the First Epoch, he betrayed Danacus, failing to come to his aid as agreed during Danacus’s battle against the leading forces of Loki, allowing Danacus to battle seventeen champions alone, which directly led to Danacus’s fall. Thereafter, Loki and others did not seize the powers of death, instead allowing Morbis to covertly claim the theocracy, with any secret agreements made being unknowable.

"Yes, it is Morbis." Denia reproached not Catherine’s outburst, and kindly said, "At that time Danacus had not yet perished, Morbis was still a subordinate deity, not as powerful as he later became, but even so, like Kyle guessed, he belonged to the deities of the Death System. So, Kyle, maybe once again, you are right."

"The problem lies in this perhaps." Pannis said with a wry smile, "Merely perhaps explains nothing."

Denia gazed off into space once more, then lowered her head, "They are asking, explain it to them, after all, it was your conjecture, you have the most right to speak."

"I believe, to this day, in the millions of years since his fall, Morbis’s act of forcefully using a mortal body for resurrection has been the only successful case. Is this because he was the only one to do so? That’s possible, but not highly likely. A more plausible reason is that other deities who tried the same failed. But he succeeded, not just out of luck, I believe. Remember, he is a deity of the Death System, in charge of life and death, a master of manipulating souls, including his own. So, in this process, what you know, they know, and what you do not know, they still know. Thus, while other deities who attempted surely failed, they could succeed because they knew how to handle potential complications in the process, how to avoid the risks they might face, thus ensuring their smooth recovery. Of course, there’s also the possibility that even among the Death System’s deities, Morbis was the first to successfully seize a mortal body for his resurrection. Having done so successfully, he shared the knowledge with Danacus so that when the time came, Danacus did not hesitate to choose Nellie’s body for his resurrection."
