Chapter 1344: Chapter 130: Memories

"Trapped?" In the darkness, Catherine’s eyes went wide with an expression of shock, and she asked in confusion, "You mean to say it was a trap?"

"A trap? Not quite. Given the situation at the time, Danacus had no need to set one," Pannis fell silent for a few seconds, then laughed bitterly at himself, "So to call it a trap is really overestimating ourselves, heh. Would you set a trap just for a few ordinary people?"

"That’s not a fair comparison," Catherine shook her head, "After all, you guys were hardly ordinary, you could be considered among the top combat forces in the Yarran world at that time."

"But before a Deity, we were just as powerless as ordinary people," Pannis didn’t shy away from his feelings of the past and continued with a sigh, "Back then, once we entered Danacus’s temporary Divine Kingdom, the moment he began to speak, we realized we might have been duped. He told us he had been waiting for us, and was getting rather impatient. It dawned on us then that our smooth breach through the millions of Undead defenses, our deep penetration into the temple amidst the encirclement of Triclops skeletons, and our frontal defeat of the moribund defenders to finally confront Danacus might have been due to weaknesses he left exposed deliberately. Haha, whether or not those openings were intentional, we couldn’t tell at the time, but he frankly revealed to us the purpose of his waiting."

"He needed a body?" Catherine guessed after thinking, "Don’t tell me, opening Death’s Gate was a ploy to lure you here and then possess your bodies."

"Not quite, invading the Yarran World to vie for worship is one thing, searching for a new body is another," Pannis gave a wry smile, shaking his head, "If Danacus could have devised such an intricate plan at that time, then we would really have no comments left, and no need to struggle anymore. We might as well surrender in front of him because under those circumstances, aside from the all-knowing and all-powerful Lord Yarra, I doubt any Deities could achieve that level, and Danacus was no exception."

"Phew, that’s a relief," Catherine was genuinely startled by her own speculation, and only relaxed after hearing Pannis’s answer, smiling wryly, "I thought as much. Danacus knows you here now because he learned of you from Lady Nellie, but back then, he couldn’t have known you and tailored a plan against you out of thin air."

"Indeed, he didn’t know in advance that we would come, but as soon as we entered Death’s Gate, he sensed us and responded swiftly," Pannis said agitatedly, "He intentionally lowered his guard, giving us enough opportunities to charge against the tide of Undead, to step by step make our way into the temple against the flow of Undead, and his ultimate goal was to snatch a body, specifically a strong one, as a foundation to reform his Divine Body."

"Even if it was his intention, you guys wouldn’t have wavered just because of that," Catherine, who had gotten to know these top-level demigods over time, surmised, "I think that you wouldn’t care whether he let you in on purpose."

"Of course, I didn’t care at all, I was even secretly thankful for his conduct," Pannis seemed totally immersed in his recollections and spoke in a low voice, "Up until that point, we, or at least I, still had ample confidence, believing that with our power, it wasn’t impossible to make him fall completely. I really hoped he would drink the bitter wine he brewed himself because when I saw him, I sensed that his power wasn’t formidable."

"I am not underestimating a Deity, but the power Danacus showed at the time was indeed much weaker than we had imagined. Perhaps it was because his long slumber had stripped him of much of his strength, perhaps because the loss of his Divine Body had taken a great toll on him, or maybe it was because his Divine Soul really wasn’t complete, merely a fragmented shard. Whatever the reason, his power seemed relatively weak, giving us hope for victory."

"In those first few minutes of confronting him, I even felt his confidence in letting us into his Divine Kingdom was excessive. Hah, the irony is, the one who was actually overly arrogant turned out to be me."

"Right after he finished talking about his real reason for letting us in, we launched our attack first. Yes, we were the ones who attacked first, with Mina reverting to her dragon form and unleashing blistering Dragon Breath as the primary strike, while my attack and Philarx’s were craftily hidden within the Dragon Breath. Philarx’s Thunder Bomb, my Sword Energy Slash, our own strongest single-target attack skills closely followed the Dragon Breath. The attacks, masked by the Dragon Breath, descended onto the Soul of Danacus without any forewarning, carrying the energy concealed within."

"However, our attack, filled with confidence, failed," Pannis still tasted bitterness recalling the past, his voice turning somber, "Danacus didn’t dodge. He didn’t even glance at the attack, just stood there smiling, and all our attacks missed."

"Every single attack, whether physical or energy-based, missed completely. No one could touch even a corner of his garments, or rather, since he was but a soul remnants of a divine being, he had no garments to speak of."

"Our three attacks passed right through his body, as though he didn’t exist at all, shattering many bones from his throne constructed of white bones, while he just watched us with a mocking smile, like a cat toying with a mouse. Only at that moment did we finally realize that we were no longer facing a sapient adversary we were familiar with, but a Deity whom everyone had to look up to."

"After our attack was thwarted, Danacus seemed to want to say something, but before his voice came out, a piercing arrow flew directly through Danacus’s mouth and deeply embedded itself into the throne behind him. Simultaneously, feathers of black and white, formed from the purest energies of light and dark, appeared silently at the location of Danacus’s eyes. Yet the feathers, effective against Ghost-type Undead, likewise passed through Danacus’s body and pinned themselves to the throne. The moment they touched the throne, the energies of light and darkness erupted together, destroying half of the Divine Throne built with Divine Power, but Danacus, in front of the throne, remained utterly unscathed, and still wore that mocking expression."

"At that point, I finally realized something was wrong and used the pre-arranged hand signals to stop the planned follow-up attacks, waiting for the next opportunity."
