Chapter 1340: Chapter 126 Bone Mushroom

"Bone Mushrooms thrive on the Energy of Death and prefer moist environments, making this location by the Lake of Sand an ideal match," Pannis nodded as he picked up a ’small’ Bone Mushroom, as long as an arm, that he had casually gathered while setting up camp earlier. While fiddling with the dusty mushroom, Pannis remarked, "I had only ever seen small Bone Mushrooms before, never ones of this size. Ah, who would have thought—they really are quite peculiar when they grow big."

Indeed, the large Bone Mushrooms had a very unique texture. In the Yarran World, Bone Mushrooms were easily recognizable by their dusty exterior which was actually a layer of translucent soft shell that grew with the stem. Once this shell was peeled back, one could see the snow-white, soft fungus inside, which, although often sprouting from corpses, carried a strange, fresh scent. However, the Bone Mushrooms from the Death World were different; their outer layer wasn’t translucent anymore. Instead, upon reaching a certain size, they started transforming into a wood-like structure, feeling like softwood pulp to the touch. Despite being soft and fragile, this wooden part could be used to fashion some temporary everyday items. Moreover, its interior was sufficiently dry to serve as an excellent fuel. Presently, the Fire Pit in front of everyone was burning with the outer shell of Bone Mushrooms. Most valuably, according to the Undead, the peeled Bone Mushrooms wouldn’t die; they would regrow their wooden shell within a few months, making them a resource that could be reused. Inside the shell, the fungal body differed from that of the smaller Bone Mushrooms as well; it was no longer as soft but had become quite tough, capable of supporting a ten-meter-tall structure on its stem alone.

"However, fortunately, their medicinal properties have not changed," Vivian pulled out a notebook, flipping to the latest page, and said, "I just conducted a few simple tests and confirmed that their medicinal properties are completely the same as the common small Bone Mushrooms, meaning they can totally replace the small ones in potions."

"Are these mushrooms commonly used?" Catherine’s eyes sparkled as she asked in a lowered voice, "Are they valuable in our world?"

"Not exactly common because they are quite rare and can’t reach the frequency of ’common use,’ but they certainly are valuable," Vivian sighed. She had anticipated Catherine’s question and could only helplessly respond, "Although these mushrooms grow by absorbing the Energy of Death, they themselves aren’t contaminated by it. In fact, they can purify the Energy of Death. Thus, they are often used in potions that involve materials like graveyard moss, Coffin Lichen, and Green Corpse Stone to absorb harmful energies from these ingredients. Had they not been so scarce, we might have discovered other uses for them, but for now, we can’t be certain."

"So, if we were to ship out a batch..." Catherine’s eyes grew brighter, her lips pursed and her cheeks slightly blushing with excitement, she anticipated eagerly, "before the market gets wind of it, we could sell the stock first, hehehehe."

"You’re really thinking far ahead," Pannis said expressionlessly as he opened his mouth and crunched off a piece of the Bone Mushroom he held, chewing as he continued, "and you’re quite optimistic, too."

"Hey, why did you eat it?" Catherine’s eyes widened, she asked in panic, "Can you really eat Bone Mushrooms just like that?"

"Oh, about that, these can actually be considered as food ingredients, too. Despite their unappealing dusty look, they taste even more delicate than meat. However, they are indeed too expensive; eating a single bite is like eating a handful of gold coins. Normally, people wouldn’t dare to consume it as food. Uh, of course, normally people wouldn’t know they can eat it at all." Pannis broke off two pieces and popped them into the mouths of Ava and Lina sitting next to him, then with rolled eyes said, "Instead of worrying about me, you should worry about yourselves. You’re still focusing on how to make money with Bone Mushrooms."

"So what should I study? How to get out of here alive?" Catherine blinked, speaking with a relaxed expression, "That’s for you to consider, hehe, haven’t we already discussed this? This time we’ve made up our minds to completely let loose and leave everything in your hands. All decisions will be yours to make, and all we need to do is follow you. As for whether your choices will lead us to survival or death, that’s not for us to worry about. What we need to do is earnestly envision our new life and prepare for it. That way, even if the worst comes to pass, at least we’ve dreamed and imagined, so we’ll have no regrets."

"Suddenly, I feel this mushroom doesn’t taste good at all." Pannis went silent for a moment, pressed his forehead, and muttered in complaint, "I really hate this world after all, even with food, I still hate it."

"Hehe, really?" The knight girl stretched out her calloused right hand, forcefully snatched a piece of Bone Mushroom, and popped it in her mouth, closing her eyes to savor it, "Isn’t it delicious? It’s elastic without being too tough, and smooth in texture. If you drench it in sauce, it could easily replace a top-quality steak, and the lingering fragrance in your mouth after swallowing is truly delectable."

"You shouldn’t tease him like that, big sis, even though he always tries to persuade us to return to the Yarran World, it is indeed irritating," Freya said like a true princess, elegantly covering her mouth with a giggle, "But considering he’s been quite honest so far, merely making tentative attempts without any substantial action, let’s forgive him."

"Hmph, I think big sis treats him just right," Lina snapped her book shut with a smack, glaring at Pannis, "At this point in time, still trying to stir up our fear, do you really think we followed you impulsively? Do you really think we don’t know what we’re doing? We agreed either to live together or to die together here, do you think we were just talking?"

"Ah." Pannis pinched the bridge of his nose in distress, chuckling bitterly, "You guys really are..."

"You all seem quite relaxed," Vivian cut off Pannis before he could continue, her face stern as she spoke, "You seem quite happy eating, hmm, give me another piece, oof oof, but shouldn’t we consider the most important matter here? Oof."

"What issue?" Pannis plucked a piece of mushroom that had stuck to the Mage girl’s face, asking with a twitching mouth, "From your behavior, it doesn’t seem like you think there is anything more important than eating."

"This place is indeed suitable for growing Bone Mushrooms," Vivian swallowed the food in her mouth forcefully, "But has nobody wondered? In this land of death, how did the initial seeds of the Bone Mushroom get here? They couldn’t have just appeared from nowhere."
