Chapter 1257: Chapter 43: The Empty Girl

"Yo, monster uncle." The girl’s crisp voice called to Pannis, who was in the midst of fleeing, "You’re being hunted by the sisters again, haha, just like Sister Catherine said, you never learn your lesson. You have to get chased at least once a day, or you won’t be able to sleep well at night due to distress."

"You little brat." Pannis stopped in his tracks and waved the newspaper he had rolled into a tube, symbolically tapping the girl on the head a few times. Rolling his eyes, he said, "What would an underage kid know? Don’t go spreading nonsense with them."

"You’re hitting my head again, my brain is going to be knocked silly by you." The girl covered her head, pouting her lips in dissatisfaction as she glared at Pannis, "Mean uncle, you bullied me this morning, and now you’re bullying me again."

"Something that doesn’t exist in the first place can’t be knocked sillier." Pannis maneuvered past the girl’s arms, tapped her a few more times, and then said contentedly, "Hmm, it’s hollow inside, feels good to knock on."

"Hmph, you wait, mean uncle, Viv... Sister." The girl swallowed back the name that was about to slip out, cautiously looked around, and upon realizing no one else had noticed her slip, she breathed a sigh of relief, stuck out her tongue playfully, and said, "That was close, that was close. Sister, look, monster uncle is bullying me again, you have to help me hit him."

"Don’t worry, I’ll tell the eldest sister when we get back, he won’t be able to run away then." The mage girl gestured threateningly at Pannis and then patted the little girl’s head. Though they were nearly the same height, such a gesture looked incongruous, "But what about you, Lily? Why are you still selling newspapers so late today? Aren’t you only supposed to have this part-time job in the mornings? Besides, I remember you’re supposed to deliver newspapers on subscription, not sell them on the street."

"It’s all because of you, Sister." Little girl Lily looked around again, making sure no one could hear her, and whispered, "Vivian, you have no idea how famous you are now. I heard that all the newspapers in the Holy City have published special editions about you. Every newspaper is discussing your accomplishments, and as a result, nearly all the paperboys have been called into action, selling newspapers throughout the Holy City. This is great because I get paid five times as much, hehe, I really wish we had such good things happen every day. However, Sister, what did you do? Everything was fine this morning, but by afternoon, you caused such a huge commotion. I had no idea at first until I saw the illustration of you in the newspaper, and I was so shocked I nearly let slip that I knew you."

"What I did should be written in the newspaper," Vivian asked curiously, "Moreover, am I famous now? Ordinary people shouldn’t be as interested as professionals, right?"

"It’s written in the newspaper, but it’s too complicated, I don’t understand it. I’d be foolish to believe what those intelligible parts say," Lily wrinkled her nose, "As for your fame, hehe, you probably can’t imagine it, but almost everyone is talking about you now."

"Why is that?" Vivian asked, puzzled, "Logically speaking, my research results should not matter much to ordinary people, they shouldn’t be this interested."

"You’re overlooking the impact of the news’s sensation," Pannis explained in a low voice, "You can think back, in recent years, how many times have you seen the newspapers go mad promoting and discussing the same person like this? Even Snape, the world’s richest man visiting the Holy City, never caused such a big sensation, yet you did. Everyone can see your name on every newspaper; for most ordinary people, your name so unfamiliar and you being a young girl, this further enhances their curiosity. No wonder everyone is making you the topic of conversation. If I’m not wrong, in the coming month, your name will continue to be a talking point at dining tables and tea parties, and people will take pride in having the chance to meet you. After a month, your name will gradually fade from conversation, but with a month’s worth of memory reinforcement, your name will have left a deep mark in the minds of Holy City residents, and it’s unlikely they will forget you for a long time to come."

"Well, Mage Uncle got it right this time," Lily posed like an adult, nodding with feigned maturity. "Sister, you underestimated the terrifying extent of the Holy City newspapers. All the channels combined can cover almost every corner of the city. With all the newspapers reporting on you, how could you not cause a sensation?"

"Thump, thump, thump." The newspaper tube once again wreaked havoc on Lily’s head. Pannis joked, "What do you mean he got it right this time? When have I ever been wrong, you little brat? If you can’t speak properly, then don’t talk nonsense."

"Ouch, you’re hitting me again, Mix-and-Match Uncle. Hmph, I’ll never bother with you again." Lily clutched her head and darted away, venting her frustration on Pannis with a fake kick and a vicious wave of her fist before waving to Vivian, "Sister, I’m off to sell more papers, goodbye. Oh, and by the way, could you give me an autograph later? Hehe, I want to show off to my friends for once."

"Of course," Vivian nodded. "Come to my house after you finish delivering the papers tomorrow morning, and I’ll grant your wish then."

"Thanks, Sister Catherine, goodbye!" As Lily left, she made a fierce face at Pannis and giggled as she hopped and skipped away.

"See, you’ve already made a huge splash. Everyone in this city is talking about your name, and it’s foreseeable that, before long, this will extend to the whole world," Pannis said with an amused smirk. "What does it feel like now? Pride? Honor? Arrogance, or something else?"

"Your smile is weird, it always feels like you’re plotting something," the girl eyed Pannis’s smile suspiciously, but didn’t pursue it and instead frowned, "At first, I felt just like you said. But after cooling down and seeing people discussing me, I suddenly felt very empty. That’s also why I didn’t want to face the reporters with the president and others. I don’t know why, but suddenly, it all seemed so meaningless, so boring, so strange. It’s supposed to be my biggest pursuit in life, but suddenly, I just can’t get excited about reaping this fruit. Now I’m even questioning what’s wrong with me?"

"Hehe, come on, let’s go home together," Pannis extended his hand to the girl, letting her grasp it firmly, and softly laughed, "I think you’ll figure it out soon enough."

"Have you seen what’s wrong with me?" Vivian asked, "Tell me, quick."

"Hehe, I don’t want to," Pannis pulled the girl forward, "Some things, you only truly understand when you figure them out on your own. Let’s go, time to go home."
