Chapter 1247: Chapter 33 You Actually Understand Everything
"Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm." Pannis strolled back to No. 6 Fox Street, humming a tune so annoying it could drive anyone who heard it mad. He stood in front of the metal gate, sizing it up, then suddenly nodded vigorously, climbed over the gate, and the moment he landed, he found a pair of feet clad in armor standing behind where he’d landed. Gritting her teeth, the figure behind him spoke fiercely, "You, why can’t you enter through the gate like everyone else? Be careful, or the city guards will cart you off."
"But I did go through the gate." Pannis blinked, giving Catherine an innocent look as if he had been unjustly accused, "I’m still standing in front of it, how can you claim I didn’t come through the gate?"
With a "bang," it was quite evident that the knightly young lady had found the best way to deal with Pannis’s annoying ways. Many times, there’s nothing a punch to the head can’t solve—if one punch doesn’t do the trick, then two will.
"Hey, hey, hey, don’t start swinging a second punch for no good reason." Pannis held his head and protested unhappily, "Alright, alright, I got it wrong, don’t hit me. Hmm, you also seem dressed to leave the house—what’s going on? Why does everyone want to leave first thing in the morning on the day we just got back? I remember in the past, right after getting back, everyone used to want to stay at home as if they were rooted like oak trees."
"Eh, not everyone is as idle as you are." Catherine said in a low voice, revealing a slight disdain, "Being away from home for so many days, we all have a lot of things to take care of. Besides, it probably won’t be long before we’ll have to leave again and when that will be, no one can be sure. Naturally, we want to finish the important things first."
"What things are that important that they’re more significant than resting? Cough, cough, cough—just kidding, just kidding, stay cool." Pannis quickly moved away from the knight, speaking casually, "Then go on, I’ll go back to catching up on sleep. I’m dead tired."
"Wait, Lina dragged you out early this morning?" Catherine stopped Pannis, who was ready to slip away and asked, "Where is she now? Why didn’t she come back with you?"
"She unethically sent me back alone and stayed behind at the temple." Pannis grumbled, "And she even chased me from the back hall to the front gate, waving a mallet. She almost cracked my skull open."
"That’s got to be because you provoked her again," Catherine glanced at him dismissively, not bothering to ask for specifics. She instructed, "I’m heading to the Guild. Now that the mission is over, I have to report the details to the Guildmaster—it’s going to take some time, so I won’t be back for lunch. You have lunch with Ava and the few little ones."
"Oh, got it." Pannis nodded, then paused, asking, "Are Vivian and Freya also out?"
"Oops, forgot to tell you." Catherine tapped her head and said with an embarrassed smile, "Freya went to see her father. I reckon I’ll see her when I go to make my detailed report—we can have lunch together then. As for Vivian...she seemed a bit unhappy."
"Hmm? Unhappy?" Pannis asked, puzzled, "What happened?"
"Nothing happened," Catherine shook her head, explaining, "She was looking for you everywhere this morning, apparently having something important to discuss, but she wouldn’t say why when I asked her. When she found out that you and Lina had disappeared, she was quite disappointed and left on her own. I heard she’s headed to the Mage Guild. I wanted to accompany her, but she insisted on going alone, so I let her have her way."
"Hmm, looking for me?" Pannis stroked his chin, pondering, "Then I understand."
"Aren’t you going to go see her?" Catherine asked. "You could bring her back for lunch together. I’m worried if she comes back by herself, she’ll get lost in thought again, like that time, and stare blankly until evening, then end up being brought back by the city guard. And she really seemed quite disappointed this morning. The smile on her face turned stiff in an instant, and it was very concerning."
"Don’t worry, I think I know what’s going on," Pannis said with a smile that was tinged with bitterness as he glanced sideways at Catherine. "Besides, I think you’ve guessed it too, which is why you’ve been waiting for me outside, just so you could tell me all about it first thing."
"Ha, ha, ha, what are you talking about? I don’t understand a single word," Catherine said, using the classic Pannis method of changing the subject, her eyes darting around. "You’re really no good at jokes, ha-ha-ha, that’s not even remotely funny."
"Yeah, yeah, ha-ha-ha-ha," Pannis also chuckled drily. "I was just joking, of course."
"Really, you can be so... How can you make jokes about something so serious?" said the knight girl, covering half her face and giggling foolishly as she noticed Pannis’s piercing gaze. "No more, no more, I’m running out of time, ha-ha-ha, I have to get to the Guild, and I’ll leave the rest to you."
"Hey," Pannis called after the fleeing Catherine, and after a moment said, "Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. And there’s no need to pick her up for lunch; her business doesn’t start until the afternoon. It’s useless to go now; I’ll go there later."
"Mhm," Catherine paused in her steps, slowly turned around, and said with bitten lips, "I know, in fact, you understand everything in your heart, even though you haven’t been able to give us a definite answer until now. But the fact that you agreed to accompany Lina to the temple and promised to go find Vivian at the Mage Guild later, we’re already very grateful for that, and I believe they all feel the same way."
"I... understand," Pannis opened his mouth as if to say something else, but in the end, just offered a faint smile.
"Don’t say anything now, I don’t want to hear anything," Catherine suddenly acted like a child, closed her eyes, covered her ears, and with blushing cheeks, turned her head and dashed outside.
"Wait a minute," Pannis raised his voice and called out: "You..."
"I can’t hear, I didn’t hear anything," the knight girl quickened her pace, desperately trying to escape from Pannis’s proximity. Compared to her usual composure, her current display of shyness was so endearing that it made it difficult to look away from her face.
"Bang"
"You’re... going to hit the door," Pannis said leisurely, finally getting out what he wanted to say after the collision sound: "Oh, you already hit it. That must have hurt, judging by the sound."
"Pannis!" Catherine, rubbing her reddened nose, shouted resentfully, "You did that on purpose. Stop right there!"
