Chapter 1242: Chapter 28 Prayer
"Is there something strange I don’t know about?" Lina, her face flushed, stormed into the prayer room. Just as Pannis was about to follow, the priestess had already slammed the prayer room’s door shut, the sound almost audible throughout the whole temple. Pannis blinked dumbly, touched his nearly hit nose, looking innocently at the strangely behaving elderly nun Elisa and asked cluelessly, "It seems I did nothing wrong. Why has my nose suddenly become so endangered?"
"Hmm, you don’t know?" Elisa smiled weirdly, watching Pannis continually nodding, and said contentedly, "Very well. Very well. You are a very nice young man. Since you know nothing now, it’s better to keep it that way."
"Hey, Sister, is this really appropriate?" Pannis rolled his eyes and said, "As a priest of the God of Mercy, shouldn’t you kindly help others ease their troubles? Why do I feel the more troubled I am, the happier you seem to be? Isn’t that contrary to Denia’s teachings? Don’t you worry that Lady Denia in the Divine Kingdom would be saddened by your actions?"
"Praise be to our Lord." The old woman devoutly drew a square on her chest, speaking in the unique tone of the clergy: "We must never forget the will of the Lord. However, child, oftentimes, the more you know, the more troubled you become. Thus, what I’m doing now is indeed helping you ease your troubles."
"Is that so?" Pannis gritted his teeth, saying helplessly, "Fine, you win. No wonder you’ve been a nun serving the Deity for decades. I guess it’s okay if I don’t ask anymore, right?"
"It’s not that I don’t want to tell you, but one day you will find out from that child herself." The old woman’s exceedingly kind expression, paired with a smile, gave Pannis a feeling akin to what their house’s Fox might look like when old. The old woman said with a gentle smile, "Since that child hasn’t told you yet, it means she’s not quite ready to let you know. So, not telling you is also for your own good. Just control your curiosity. Don’t worry, it won’t be long before the child will tell you."
"I have my doubts about that." Pannis scratched his head in frustration and did not pursue the topic further. He stared at the prayer room and asked, "How long is she planning to stay in there? The same amount of time as a normal prayer session?"
"Well, let me think, it seems it will be slightly longer than a normal prayer." The elderly nun Elisa reminisced: "But if all goes well, she should be out in about half an hour. Hmm, maybe it could take a bit longer, I am a bit hazy on that."
"I knew it wasn’t a normal prayer." Pannis muttered with a grimace, "And it even depends on whether it goes smoothly or not, which means there’s a possibility it might not go well?"
"In theory, yes," the old woman nodded, "But for you, there shouldn’t be any need to worry about it going poorly. I could tell from the first time that child brought you here, you are definitely a good kid."
"Well, thank you. But I am not worried at all. I barely know anything. How could I possibly worry whether it will go smoothly or not? Oh, wait a second, I just realized, you actually remember me?" Pannis exclaimed in surprise, "We’ve only met once, and it’s been almost three years since then. I didn’t expect you to still remember who I am."
"Do you think that child has many male friends who she could bring here?" the old nun said discontentedly. "Since I met that child, all these years she has only brought you here, how could I possibly forget who you are?"
"Alright, alright, it seems it was my fault, I asked a pointless question." Theoretically, with Pannis’s perceptiveness, a thin layer of the prayer room’s door could not block his hearing, and he could completely hear the prayers inside. But this was the temple, under the Deity’s power, the prayer room was the most secretive room in the temple, it was like being isolated in another space, and one could not hear from the outside world. Of course, Pannis wouldn’t be so rude as to actually try eavesdropping, he just sighed helplessly and said, "Since you’ve said so, asking further is meaningless. Is there somewhere I can sit for a while? I’ll help you get there to rest, we can’t just keep standing here waiting for her."
"Thank you, lad," Elisa expressed even more satisfaction, smiling till her eyes squinted, and letting Pannis support her arm as she pointed to a door, "That’s where Ankava rests after preaching, usually nobody will disturb there. You go and sit there first, his preaching should also be nearly done. I’ll go prepare some tea, no need to support me anymore, I’m not yet so old that I can’t move around."
While she was speaking, the side door leading to the preaching hall was already being opened, and old High Priest Ankava, leaning on a walking stick and supported by an apprentice, walked out from the preaching hall shakily. The old man looked up and saw Pannis standing beside Elisa. On seeing Pannis, the old man paused, seemingly unable to recognize him at first, but after just a second or two, Ankava’s face lit up with realization and a joyful smile appeared on his lips as he excitedly said, "Aren’t you the boy who came with Lina last time? You being here must mean Lina is back, but why isn’t she here?"
"She went into the prayer room," Pannis shrugged and said, "She just went in not long ago."
"Prayer room?" Ankava paused, puzzled, and said, "Why did she run off to the prayer room as soon as she came back, without even seeing us first?"
"You ask too many questions," Elisa said with displeasure, glancing at Ankava, and complained, "They came together, and the child Lina specifically came to pray."
"Ah?" Ankava was taken aback, suddenly seeming to think of something, looked at Pannis, looked at Pannis again, and after looking at Pannis yet again, nodded repeatedly and said, "I understand now, good, good, praying is good, praying is good indeed."
"I’m really sorry," Pannis’s mouth twitched as he muttered, "You all seem to have understood one after another, but I don’t understand at all."
"Hahaha, not understanding is fine," the old man laughed radiantly like Elisa, let go of the apprentice’s hand, and grasped Pannis’s arm, saying, "Come on, my boy, join me inside the room, let’s have a good chat."
However, the two of them did not get the chance to go into the room and chat, because less than ten seconds after Ankava finished speaking those words, a divine aura suddenly descended from above the prayer room, and following that, a sacred, merciful light fell from the sky, enveloping the surroundings of the prayer room.
