Chapter 1224: Chapter 10 The Possibility of Coexistence

"Kyle, I remember you once said something to us," Flare said softly. "You mentioned that when a problem arises, trying to solve the problem itself is often the most foolish choice. It not only requires more effort but also is inefficient. It should be considered the last resort, only to be used when there are no other options. The truly smart approach is to see through these complex issues to the real cause of the problem and then directly address that cause. Once the cause disappears, in most cases, the problem also vanishes, saving both time and effort."

"Uh, indeed, I did say that." Pannis scratched his head awkwardly, feeling a bit uncomfortable hearing his own words repeated by someone else.

"I feel this matter has a clear trace of your style; you must feel it too," Flare said with a half-smile. "For the Yarran World, the existence of Undead is inevitable, regardless of whether Death’s Gate exists or whether the Divine Duty of Death is controlled by someone. It’s a difficult task to ensure that sentient beings are not troubled by the Undead. But what if we remove the fundamental reason for their opposition? Just like now, if your guess is correct, it would mean that the inevitability of their opposition no longer exists, and the threat of the Undead naturally dissipates. Heh, this must be her adopting your way of thinking, and then slowly making these achievements. I think if it were up to her straightforward way of doing things, she would never have thought of these complex issues."

"Maybe so." Pannis said with a bitter smile. "Perhaps these changes among the Undead are indeed the results of Nellie’s efforts over the past century. Her will didn’t disappear when Danacus took over her body; on the contrary, she continued to resist Danacus, and I even suspect that she might have had the upper hand at times, allowing her own consciousness to dominate the Deity’s actions. With this opportunity, she used the Deity’s authority to gradually transform the existence of the Undead, fundamentally altering their nature, which isn’t impossible."

"It seems she was prepared for Death’s Gate to be reopened right from the start, thereby making two sets of preparations. On one hand, she helped us disrupt the plans of the Divine Servants, hoping to prevent the reopening of Death’s Gate, and on the other, she used her own influence over the existence of the Undead, hoping to completely resolve the issue of the Undead before the gate was reopened," Flare said admiringly. "Sadly, the efforts to stop the Divine Servant plans failed, but on the other side, she succeeded. The nature of the Undead has indeed been influenced by her, changing to what it is now."

"Yes, that’s one way to put it," Pannis nodded noncommittally. "With this, the need for an all-out conflict is lost, and coexistence can be achieved to a certain degree, eliminating the need for so many sacrifices."

"Your idea is very appealing," Flare sighed and shook her head. "But there are two problems that persist; without solving these, it is very hard to convince everyone, especially since this is a matter that concerns the survival of all races."

"Ah, that’s where the trouble lies," Pannis said, massaging his temples. "I can’t answer either of those questions."

"But they must be confronted; avoiding them is not possible," Flare said seriously, looking at Pannis’s bitter smile. "The first issue is that all of this is your conjecture, or rather, our conjecture. How confident are you that these guesses reflect the true reality? Indeed, the Undead are not currently attacking living beings actively, but what about later? Can this continue indefinitely? Can the innate opposition of life and death be so easily eliminated? Could all these appearances be deceits crafted by the Undead after they gained Divine Wisdom?"

"This issue is something no one can be sure of, just like no one can be sure that the alliance of all races won’t suddenly collapse tomorrow due to uneven loss of benefits," Pannis said sternly. "Some things don’t need to be confirmed before they are acted upon. These possibilities can only be tested by time. Just like your first question, is all this just a disguise by the Undead? It’s possible, but if it is a disguise, after being tested by time, it will inevitably be exposed one day. What everyone needs to do is maintain a certain level of vigilance, refrain from making hasty decisions, and not rush into war, but rather give time a chance to verify this conjecture. For all entities, continuing this might continue to consume a lot of resources daily, but compared to the outbreak of a war, consuming these resources is well worth it. I think the leaders of all entities are clever enough to understand this."

"Indeed, your conjecture is very tempting for all entities; supporting your idea to convince the Elder Council to maintain a wait-and-see attitude without initiating war isn’t difficult," Flare said, twirling her emerald-green hair, her eyes sharp. "Going further, if even the Dwarves in the Elder Council can accept this, convincing the leaders in the high council to maintain the status quo won’t be hard. This brings us to the second issue though, even if your conjecture holds truth, maintaining the status quo is still full of risks. If the Deity behind the Undead is Nellie, I wouldn’t hesitate to agree with your idea and would even directly withdraw the troops, ceasing to waste finances and resources. But Danacus has been resurrected, Kyle, this topic can’t be avoided. We are no longer facing Nellie but Danacus himself. Nellie spent a hundred years inducing these changes in the Undead, so how long do you think it will take for Danacus to revert the Undead back to their original state?"

"Yes, Danacus has been resurrected," Pannis slowly closed his eyes and sighed deeply. "If Danacus takes the leading position again, given enough time, everything will revert to its original state, and all of Nellie’s years of effort will have been in vain."

"If we say that Danacus will gradually revert the Undead, then not attacking now is giving them enough time to adjust," Flare said softly. "Moreover, if everyone is deceived by the Undead’s temporary behavior and really opts for a mode of coexistence and compromise, once Danacus lets the Undead return to their original state, we will have lost the best chance to confront the Undead."
