Chapter 1216: Chapter 2: A Peculiar Attitude

Following Muir into the Elven Royal Court, the atmosphere around them was tense but not much different from the usual. However, upon closer observation, one would notice a substantial decrease in the number of adventurers from other races within the court. Only those from different species who had lived in the Elven Royal Court for decades or even centuries remained, while other professional races had left the forest and returned to their own kinds. As for those who stayed, the Elven Royal Court had become their home, and they were willing to contribute to defending their new home.

"It seems that you received the news faster than we had imagined," Pannis said with furrowed brows upon noticing the internal changes of the King’s Court. "What happened? What’s the situation outside? Has the war started?"

"With so many questions at once, it’s impossible for me to answer," Muir said calmly, walking side by side with Pannis at the front of the group. "Don’t worry. The situation outside isn’t as bad as you think; the war hasn’t started yet. However, in a certain sense, it’s worse than anyone could imagine."

"Has Death’s Gate been reopened?" Pannis pressed on. "It should still be at the center of the Sighing Desert, right? That’s the weakest spot in the Yarran World. If Death’s Gate were to open, it would definitely be there."

"Yes, the gate has opened," Muir nodded. "And some Undead have already come out. I don’t know the details, but let’s have Her Majesty the Queen explain it to you. She knows the clearest."

"In that case, your troops must have already been positioned," Pannis said. "Logically speaking, although Yeda’s followers prefer peace, they will still be at the forefront in an unavoidable war, providing the best support to the warriors of our race, seeking to end the war as swiftly as possible. But why are you still here?"

"That’s why I said the situation isn’t as you imagine," Muir sighed. "Right now, not just us, but all forces in the Yarran World are probably just as confused about what the Undead really want."

"What do you mean by that?" Catherine asked, surprised by Muir’s response. "What else could the Undead want if not for mindless slaughter?"

"That’s the issue: they haven’t done that," Muir said with a troubled look. "That’s why I said, it’s unclear what they’re up to. Anyway, I don’t have all the information and it’s too complex for a few sentences to explain. Let’s wait for Her Majesty the Queen."

"Hmm, so you are taking us to meet Flare now?" Pannis again displayed that odd and mysterious expression, as if he had seen through something but refrained from speaking, casually asking, "She must be incredibly busy right now."

"Her Majesty estimated that you would arrive within the next few days, so she has been waiting for you," Muir said with a wry smile. "However, she was called to an Elder Council meeting just now. I’ll take you there first; you’ll probably need to wait near the meeting room for a while. You don’t mind, do you?"

"Eh, we don’t mind," Pannis said, his expression growing more peculiar as he eyed Muir sideways. "But letting us within a hundred meters of the Elder Council, you don’t mind that?"

"You’ve seen it before," Muir said, rolling his eyes. "What’s there to fuss about? Let’s go, let’s all head over together. I’m really lucky, I don’t even have the qualifications to attend the Elder Council yet."

"What’s going on, exactly?" Lina tugged at Pannis’s sleeve from behind and asked in a low voice, "Is the Elf Elder Council so secretive? Why can’t we even get within a hundred meters?"

"You’ll find out soon enough," Pannis replied just as quietly. "I hope it won’t surprise you too much. Tsk, I’ve already been surprised once."

The girls had to curb their curiosity, following behind Muir along the narrow paths through the Elven Royal Court. Before long, the towering Tree of the Beginning appeared in front of everyone, just as abrupt as the last time. Since it was daytime, the faint glow from the fairies circling the aerial roots wasn’t very noticeable, but they were still trying hard to flicker and assert their presence. Passing through the forest of aerial roots and climbing up the layers of vines, this time without Flare using the power of the World Tree to shift space for everyone, they all had to rely on their own strength to climb slowly.

Walking on the trunk of the World Tree, the girls felt as if they were in a different era. The last time they walked in the same spot, they were filled with a determination to face whatever came, their hearts wrought with tension and unease. Less than a month later, traversing the same path again, their mindsets were completely different. Having gone through the journey of death, each girl had noticeably matured; no longer naive, no longer confused, no longer fearful. For an adventurer, this type of maturity was the most valuable treasure.

With a loud "bang," a sudden noise arose, making the girls feel as if the branches beneath their feet trembled along with the sound, as if a Crystal bomb had just exploded nearby. The sudden incident took the girls by surprise, and they looked around, only to find that the other Demigods looked totally accustomed to it, showing no signs of surprise. Lina blinked and, unable to hold back, asked in a low voice, "Is someone fighting? Or did something explode? Surely no one would cause destruction in the Elven Royal Court; that would be too stupid."

"It’s nothing, just consider everything normal," Pannis shrugged nonchalantly, nodding towards the others, "Look at them, they’re already used to it. It’s better you get used to it quickly too, or I’m afraid you won’t be able to handle it mentally."

"I suddenly have a bad feeling," the girls looked at each other, with Catherine musing, "I think, perhaps we shouldn’t have come here."

"Trust me, it’s already too late for regrets," Pannis said with a mischievous grin. "You’ve heard things you shouldn’t have."

"Bang bang bang bang," another series of loud noises followed, and this time the girls finally realized it wasn’t an illusion—the branches under their feet were indeed trembling because the booming sounds were actually the noise of someone hitting a table or a wall.

"Are you ******* idiots? A piggo would be smarter than you," a familiar voice reached the girls’ ears. Once deep, elegant, and resonant, it now sounded extremely grumpy and rude, like someone having an argument on the street, angrily saying, "Or is it that you idiots simply don’t understand Common? Those ******* are Undead, try to wrap your already petrified brains around it for a second—do you know what Undead are? Idiots."
