Chapter 1199: Chapter 311 I Failed

"Stop causing trouble." Catherine tapped the priest girl on the head and said irritably, "If you’re going to talk, finish your sentences. Be careful, or you might get hit."

"I clearly got hit already." Lina covered her head and took a few steps back, giggling, "And I didn’t say anything wrong. They indeed didn’t agree to negotiate because before we could even propose a negotiation, they had already halted hostilities."

"Huh?" Pannis paused, asking in confusion, "They halted the fighting without saying anything?"

"Yes, they seemed to see that we had no intention of continuing the fight, so they simply stopped their attacks." Catherine, worried that Lina might blurt out something absurd, quickly responded, "We didn’t expect them to show goodwill on their own. However, since they took the initiative to cease fighting, we definitely wouldn’t keep pestering them."

"Sister even wanted to go up and talk to them," Lina said with a snicker, "But they were very wary of her. Sister said several things, but they ignored her, checked the bodies on the ground, and then turned and left. They only responded a few times before they left."

"Did they say anything?" Pannis asked thoughtfully, frowning, "Did they introduce their origins?"

"Uh, that’s a bit hard to answer," Lina tilted her head and hesitated for a moment before saying, "They said, rattle rattle rattle rattle and rah rah rah rah rah rah rah. Oh, and also rattle rattle rattle rah rah."

"Oh, thank you so much, that response was just perfect," Pannis rolled his eyes and said annoyed, patting his head, "I’m also foolish, almost forgot that skeletons can’t speak, they can’t communicate with humans."

"Hey, usually when people are annoyed, they pat their own heads, right?" Lina covered her head again and hid behind Catherine, protesting discontentedly, "Why did you pat mine? What if it stops my hair from growing back?"

"Wouldn’t that be perfect? Since you’d be rattling when you talk anyway, you could just pretend to be one of the undead," Pannis ignored the priest girl who was puffing her cheeks and glaring at him. As a clergy member, her underhanded curses were unlikely to have any effect anyway, so ignoring her didn’t matter. He simply stroked his chin and wondered, "What were they trying to express before they left? Why did they leave right after speaking?"

"I know, I know, ehehe, I know this one." A voice, which had been ignored for a long time, suddenly made itself heard. Lina’s backpack was pushed open from the inside, and a ghastly white hand holding an equally pale skull emerged, waving excitedly in the air, regardless of how horrifying the action was. "I understood everything," the voice bubbled with joy and pride, "their rattling was just the sound of their jaws habitually clashing together, having no actual meaning. The real message they wanted to communicate came with the motion of speaking, through the spreading of the Soul Fire to their surroundings. All our communication is like this, since skeletons can’t make sound."

"But from what we see, you and that little creature Annie are always chattering away," Catherine, who had grown accustomed to any horrifying spectacle through her experiences, responded calmly. The situations with the two little undeads together were often more horrifying; the little creatures would even sneak up in the middle of the night, discussing how to carve their tombstones and planning to place them at the entrances to their rooms. Catherine had to slap their little heads a few times before she managed to prevent the mansion from turning into a public cemetery. Comparatively, waving their own heads around was hardly anything. Thus, the knight girl casually took the little creature’s head in her hands and teased, "When it’s time for you to talk, you never miss a word. The neighbors have even complained about the noise in the backyard. From your behavior, I certainly can’t tell that you can’t speak."

"It’s because I am the most special," Little Deer’s Soul Fire flickered, as if it had heard praise. It sounded extremely pleased, "Annie helped me solidify my ability to make sounds, so I don’t have to rattle like those idiots."

"Nobody was praising you, and yet you’re so pleased with yourself." Pannis poked the little creature’s jaw, which was snapping open and shut, and suddenly jumped up, screaming, "Ow ow, you idiot, you’re a Little Deer, not a little dog! Did you used to bite people every day, or why else would you be so skilled at it now? Let go, you’re going to bite it off!"

"Hmph, you’re the little dog." The little skeleton forgot it was punishing Pannis and was about to speak when Pannis swiftly escaped, leaving it grinding its teeth regretfully, "Such a pity, I was about to break the record for hanging on the longest, guess I’ll just have to wait for next time."

"Stop messing around, haven’t I told you not to bite dirty things? Don’t do this again next time," Catherine soothed the little guy by stroking its smooth head, "But I really want to know, what exactly did they say before they left?"

"Hmm, let me think, I’ve forgotten a lot," Little Deer’s Soul Fire began flickering like a string of colored lights. The girls all knew this was a technique it had recently developed, just like people would unconsciously kick stones on the ground when bored. Fortunately, the skeletons hadn’t said much, so the little creature quickly recalled, "Ah, right, I remember now, they only said a few words. At the beginning, they asked, ’Why did you suddenly attack us? Are you siding with those who have betrayed our lord?’ I remember Sister Catherine didn’t say anything at that time; she just pressed her hand against her sword and stared at them, nodding her head to them."

"Huh? Wait, no, that’s not right." Catherine widened her eyes in astonishment, saying, "Were they talking just then? I was just nodding to say hello."

"Pffthahaha, big sis, so you and the Divine Servants were on the same side." Lina, before she even spoke, ducked to the side, and then burst into laughter, clutching her stomach, "I didn’t see that coming, you doing something like this, hahahaha, Little Deer, quick, what else did they say?"

"Then, they exchanged a few words, and finally, the tallest one said grumpily, I understand, you humans and them are not on the same side; you just attack us because we are Undead, for no reason." Little Deer deepened its voice, imitating the other’s tone, "We thought you were special, but it turns out you’re just like those ordinary creatures, discriminating against us. You’re no different from those humans who attack the Undead for no reason. Hmm, then Sister Catherine not only nodded, but she also forced a smile and even bowed with her hand on her sword."

"Hahaha, big sis, were you performing the pre-duel ceremony?" Although the scene was reenacted by Little Deer and indeed was very dangerous, rendering the air tense and the communication failed, since it was all over, Lina could tease quite relaxedly, "What’s next, drawing swords and crossing them? Have you found the witnesses yet?"

"Watch it or I’ll hit you." Catherine’s face was menacing as she threatened the priest girl, but her face was already flushed red, and she said helplessly, "It was a misunderstanding! I bowed just to express an apology, I was apologizing for our previous impudence."

The usually steadfast knight girl’s face was flushed and her flustered appearance was rare, making her look quite amusing as she covered her face and her gaze darted around, not daring to meet anyone’s eyes. The amusement in Pannis’s eyes grew thicker.

But suddenly, Catherine, amidst her fluster, paused and stared dangerously at the little skeleton in her palm, saying, "Little guy, something’s not right, you seem to have intentionally omitted something, did you forget?"

"Did I miss something?" Little Deer’s voice sounded extremely innocent, crisply saying, "I don’t think so."

"I remember while I was bowing, I was also explaining our previous actions, and kept apologizing for our rash behavior," Catherine recalled more clearly, her voice cold with a smirk, "I think, any person thinking properly wouldn’t consider that a provocation, or are you telling me that skeletons not only can’t speak but also don’t understand the common tongue? There doesn’t seem to be such a notion."

"Ha, ha, ha, Sister Catherine, your smile is so odd." Little Deer laughed innocently, "What are you talking about, did you say something back then? Hahaha, that must be my memory messing up, yeah, that’s definitely it."

"You little fool." Catherine, half laughing, half crying, tapped on the little fellow’s skull, "Come on, what did they say after that, no more deliberate omissions."

"Ooh, I get it." The Soul Fire within Little Deer dimmed, sounding dejected, "After hearing sister’s explanation, they seemed to have accepted it. They were not as angry as before. They said, tell him the war is not over, don’t think it’s that simple, my children will eventually consume this world, if you aren’t afraid of death, come again to my kingdom, I will make you witness the terror of death. Um, what does that mean? Is death so terrifying?"

"Nothing, thank you, Little Deer." Catherine’s playful expression faded, an ominous premonition rising within her as she said worriedly, "Since we successfully stopped their ritual, Death’s Gate won’t open, they won’t be able to come out, and you can’t go there again, right?"

"Yeah, in theory, that’s correct," Pannis nodded, "But, I failed."

"Ha, I knew it; it must have been them trying to scare us for revenge," Lina sighed with relief, "The ritual was stopped, how could it still ... wait, what did you say?"

"I failed," Pannis sighed, "The ritual was completed."
