Chapter 1190: Chapter 302: The Feast of Magic

Vivian’s Magical World, a name destined to shock the entire Yarran Continent in the future. Although it took Vivian, with her mastery of the Magic Array, about thirty to forty minutes to set up, consuming a large quantity of potions as aides during the process, it was all worth it. Once the array was established, in this small world made up by the array, the setter was the sole deity. No other existence could contend with the setter, not even a demigod, unless they used their domain to confront them directly.

The effects of the array were not complex, yet there were intrinsic limitations, which did not hinder its power. The effect had just one function: by its own mechanism, it connected the user with the leyline energy nodes underground, directly drawing infinite mana from these nodes. Previously, this had only been possible for Magic Towers, but after the modifications by the genius girl, it could work on an individual, turning the user into a human-formed Magic Tower. One could imagine, with endless mana, almost negligible spellcasting time, comprehensive coverage, and magic effects that surpassed personal limits, when these characteristics were concentrated in one mage, they had no weaknesses anymore. They resembled an entire Mage Corps. However, the limitations of the array were significant, similar to that of Magic Towers, as it had to be established on a leyline node. If there were no powerful leyline energy nodes nearby, the array would be completely ineffective.

However, this was not a concern at the moment. The Forest of Death itself was a region with extremely frequent leyline energy activity. Within its bounds, lay numerous leyline energy nodes, especially in the core area of the Forest of Death where the number of nodes was countless. So, in this place, considering the presence of leyline energy nodes was unnecessary. Setting up the array anywhere would work, and finding an area not covered by leyline nodes in this region had actually become a challenge.

Thus, when Vivian declared her victory, the balance of victory finally started to tip towards the girls. Before this, the enemy had ample time to arrange their troops and counter the girls’ tactics exhaustively. The defensive measures the girls desperately put up were seen by the enemy commander as merely a futile struggle to delay defeat. The girls were well aware of this reality. Even though Freya had deployed the goblin crossbows and goblin crystal energy cannons, against hundreds of enemies and dozens of formidable foes, the effect was pitifully small. Just like in the few minutes of cannon firing, the quantity of crystals used was enough to nearly make Catherine cry. However, the number of enemy casualties caused was less than one-tenth. Freya indeed prepared a massive supply of crystals for this purpose, providing enough for three to four times longer, but it did not hold much significance. As the fight dragged on, the casualties caused by the bombardment decreased, and even extending the firing for another fifteen minutes would at most force one-third of the enemies to retreat, generally only affecting Gold or Silver Rank mages. The actual threats to the girls, the seventeen ghouls, were likely unaffected. Most of the girls’ other trump cards were similar, like Ava, who was currently in a drunken state, wreaked havoc in the crowd for two minutes, indeed causing significant trouble for the enemy and indirectly buying Freya time. But in just two minutes, Ava returned with numerous wounds of varying depths, and that was with Catherine by her side to protect her. Otherwise, returning might not have been an option.

This foresight led the enemy commander to choose his previous war mode: to slowly advance, oppress step by step, and gradually wear down the opponent’s strength while minimizing his own casualties. After all, for a victory that was assured, there was no need to incur significant losses on his side. Yet now, he truly regretted his decision. For the first time since commanding the troops personally, he regretted his tactics so deeply. If he could do it over, he would rather disregard all tactics and order everyone to charge, even if half were lost. At least it would ensure the complete annihilation of the enemy, fulfilling his mission, instead of tasting the bitterness of unavoidable defeat as he was now.

Indeed, he had already seen his side’s defeat, to put it precisely, when Vivian began her attack, he saw the downfall of his forces.

The mage girl, holding her magic staff, stood steadfastly at the center of the array. The energy of magic swirled around her, emitting joyous whooshing sounds. With her staff swinging, vast amounts of magic appeared out of thin air, splattering towards the enemy like thrown water. Among the enemies, even the ghouls, who had lifespans of over a century when combined, had to admit they had probably never seen such an array of magic in quantity or type. The magic Vivian released had already surpassed the enemies’ comprehension.

The battlefield had now transformed into a feast of magic: Acid Arrow, Frost Arrow, Fire Arrow, Wind Blade Spell—these were just the appetizers. Fire Wall, Ice Rain Spell, Thunder Strike, Poison Cloud Spell—these area-limited spells were merely the soup before the meal. Cloud of Death, Fiery Sea, Ice Storm, Thunderstorm Spell—these extensive spells served as the side dishes for the main course, not even noteworthy enough to remember. Only spells like Celestial Fire, Lightning Hell, Icy World, Prison of Light, which required over ten minutes of chanting to prepare, were worthy of being the main dish at this magical feast. Other support and control spells like Gravity Spell, Light Spell, Paralysis Spell, Group Silence Spell, Mud Trap Spell were considered the dessert, an unending stream of magic, like inexhaustible dishes, allowing those participating in this feast of magic to thoroughly revel in its baptism.

Of course, no one wanted to endure such things, as long as their minds were still intact, but they had no choice but to endure, for they had no avenue to reject it.

In the Yarran World, the profession of a mage has always been synonymous with power and trouble. Not only did they have cool heads and accurate judgment, but more importantly, they possessed formidable strength. For most Upper Rank mages, given enough preparation time, they could work miracles or even destroy a city and annihilate tens of thousands of enemies by themselves. The professionals of the Yarran World shared a common understanding: if you hoped to defeat a mage of similar strength, the only tactic was to never give them prep time, to replace defense with offense and suppress time with speed. Only then was victory a possibility, merely a possibility. However, no one knew how to handle a mage who didn’t need to chant or prepare and could casually release legion-level magic—an opponent that went beyond the scope of a normal mage. Probably only tactics used to attack a Magic Tower might work.

To conquer a Magic Tower, alongside a large number of Upper Rank combat personnel, one also needed to prepare a plethora of magic-resistant equipment and numerous defensive war machines, supplemented by many long-range weapons, such as crystal energy cannons or Magic Traction Catapults. With these, victory became possible. What remained was to see if luck was on their side. Unfortunately, the Divine Servants’ troops now lacked these essentials, including Upper Rank combat personnel. By comparison, what they had was not much.

The enemy’s commander saw no hope of victory, not at all. He wanted to close the distance for hand-to-hand combat, but no one could withstand several overlapping legion-level Element attacks and approach the enemy. Moreover, who knew whether the humanoid Mage Tower opposite might suddenly unleash a series of targeted magic attacks, turning those who approached into ash? Yet, if they didn’t close the distance, they could only engage in a long-range duel, but within the forces the commander could muster, there were only a few dozen at most Gold Rank Undead mages. Their magic was neither powerful enough nor had the range to compare with their opponents’. Before the Undead mages could even bring the enemy into range, several large spells would come crashing down, roasting many Undead mages before they could even scream. Even though there were two Legendary Rank archers in the Divine Servants’ group, who took out their spare longbows, it still changed nothing. The arrows they continuously fired, mostly turned invisible in mid-flight by the falling magic attacks—even the few that the young mage girl missed didn’t matter. The arrows might have penetrated the magical barrier, but they couldn’t break through another barrier—that was Catherine, who stood tightly next to Vivian, using her body and shield as the final defense.

Thus, they saw no hope, and they could only retreat hundreds of meters back to the prayer hall, relying on the sacred statues and walls that would never be destroyed to barely hold on, even though every moment, some were leaving the scene, either heavily wounded or dead, without a chance to re-enter the battle. Yet, the enemy’s commander hadn’t given up, even now; he was waiting for the last chance, not believing the enemy could maintain this state for much longer. Humans, after all, are not real Magic Towers; their endurance is limited. Perhaps if he held on for one more second, the opposition might break out of this state, and that would be the moment his side could regain the initiative.

However... the commander glanced at his troops, still slowly diminishing by his side. When the time came, would there really be a chance to take the initiative?

This question was destined to remain unanswered because the sealed doors of the temple were suddenly opened from the outside. Even before the people outside entered the temple, a dense Energy of Death that was enough to make someone frown had already wafted in from them.
