Chapter 1166: Chapter 278: The Secret in the Domain

The girls had entered Dillie’s domain for the first time, or one might say, it was the first time anyone had entered Dillie’s domain. As they recovered from the initial haziness of entering the domain, they were hit by a fierce wind that made them squint their eyes involuntarily. The wind carried with it dry air that lacked any hint of vegetation, reminiscent of the desolate western plains of the Neville Federation. As they opened their eyes, battling the uncomfortable wind, the girls finally confirmed their location—they were standing on an irregular platform approximately one thousand square meters in size. The platform was as hard as stone but slightly different, elevated over a hundred meters above the ground, and even approaching the height of the Holy City’s Starshine Tower. Within the range of their vision, there were dozens of similar platforms, differing only slightly in height by a few meters.

Seeing the other platforms around them, the girls deduced the nature of their own platform. Rather than just a platform, it more closely resembled the top of a building; each surrounding platform represented a massive building over a hundred meters tall, almost identically modeled as if stamped from the same mold. Unlike the tapering design of a Magic Tower, these dozens of buildings were uniform in width from top to bottom, their walls ran vertically up towards the sky. Together, these structures formed a forest of towering buildings.

Upon closer inspection of these buildings, one could see that every two meters along the outer walls, there were windows that appeared to be made of transparent crystal, each about one meter high. From this, it was inferred that the interiors had floor heights of about three meters. Peering through the windows, one could vaguely make out the interiors partitioned into small rooms by walls, the largest rooms barely a few dozen square meters and the smallest less than ten square meters. The girls found it hard to imagine the terrifying experience of living in such cramped, tomb-like spaces with thousands of others.

If one looked down from the edge of the rooftop, they could see roads less than ten meters wide separating the buildings, with narrow strips of pitifully barren dirt on either side where some sparse grass grew. On one side of the roads, neatly lined up, were rows of metallic vehicles similar to those the girls had ridden in at the Goblin Research Institute. The number of these crystal energy vehicles was staggeringly large, filling up the edges of the roads, hinting at the overcrowded living conditions within the complex.

On the outer perimeter of the building complex was a three to four-meter-high wall enclosing the area into a sealed zone with two large gates at either end, seemingly for the ingress and egress of the inhabitants. Outside the wall, adjacent to one gate, was another cluster of buildings markedly different from where the girls stood. Catherine, who had attended the Knight Academy, immediately recognized that the architecture beyond the wall was undoubtedly similar to a military camp. The center of the area was a vast open space used for training, flanked by rows of neat, two-story buildings about five meters high, all uniform and monotonous, clearly serving as barracks for soldiers. Behind the barracks were larger, more spacious buildings without windows and with large, exaggerated doors—Catherine knew these were used for storing and maintaining large war machines. Some smaller, windowless buildings were probably storage for war supplies. The outermost circle of the camp was guarded by a wall at least seven or eight meters high and two or three meters thick, topped with a metallic wire mesh barrier that pulsed with strong lightning energy even from a distance. Inside the wall, high-intensity crystal energy lamps were placed every few meters, ensuring that the outside was as brightly illuminated at night as it was during the day.

Beyond the two building complexes, the world was left empty. In the distance, there were faint outlines of buildings that appeared and disappeared intermittently, clearly not occupying a dominant place in the owner of the domain’s memory. It was almost laughable to Catherine that a severe military camp was positioned right next to a civilian residential area, impossible and ludicrous by her standards. However, considering this existed within an Inherent Psychic Domain, not in reality, it became understandable.

To the girls, these buildings in the domain, though bizarre, felt very real, as if they truly existed somewhere. The only oddity was that both areas of buildings were completely devoid of people or any other living beings. Even so, the domain was far from peaceful, for along with them, sixty to seventy Demigod Rank magical beasts had been drawn into the domain. These beasts appeared as mere black dots on the wilderness more than two kilometers from the camp, but they quickly sensed the presence of the domain’s owner and charged towards the camp. The huge magical beasts, each six to seven meters tall, ran with a tremendous force that thundered and shook the ground, causing even the buildings under the girls’ feet to tremble slightly.

The horde of magical beasts grew closer, evolving from a cluster of tiny black dots to blurred outlines that were now discernible. Only then did the military camp react. The first response was a dense and intense barrage of booming sounds. Along the wall facing the charge of the beast horde, black barrels resembling crystal energy guns suddenly extended from narrow windows within structures akin to arrow towers. Accompanying the booming, flames erupted from all barrels as countless metallic projectiles streamed out like water, showering upon the charging beasts. The bullets were potent, creating fist-sized, sometimes even head-sized, craters in the ground; however, despite their strength, they couldn’t inflict substantial damage on the robust bodies of the Demigod magical beasts. They merely raised sprays of blood on their surfaces without penetrating their muscular defenses, it seemed that to truly kill one would require a relentless and concentrated attack.

However, the barrage of physical rounds was just the beginning. While they couldn’t truly harm the undead magical beasts of Demigod strength, the impact each carried effectively hindered their advance. As the beasts’ charge slowed, a series of screeching sounds followed, and more than a dozen large, oddly shaped objects resembling crystal energy bombs, trailing long tails of flames, shot over the wall. They landed precisely among the slowed horde, detonating violently. At the same time, the huge doors of the tall buildings within the camp slid open swiftly to either side. Accompanied by a rumbling sound, over ten flat metal puppets, each three to four meters high with tracks below, emerged from the buildings. The most eye-catching feature of these metal puppets, completely unfamiliar to the girls, was a very thick crystal energy cannon at the top that could rotate 360 degrees, hinting at ominous forces within.

As the battle unfolded, Catherine felt she could no longer just watch. The scorpion-tailed lion, Dillie, stood on the roof-edge facing the camp, overlooking the battlefield with such focus that it seemed he hadn’t noticed the girls at all. Catherine took a deep breath, sheathed her one-handed sword, slung Falcon Shield on her back, and prepared to walk unarmed towards the scorpion-tailed lion. But before she could step forward, her wrist was grasped by a hand - a plump hand that could only belong to the beautiful princess. The knight girl understood what Freya meant and what she worried about; growing up in such a circle, it would’ve been strange for Freya not to have such concerns, so Catherine wasn’t surprised. She, however, stared intently into Freya’s eyes and sternly made a ’no talking’ gesture. Princess Freya bit her lip, wavered for a moment, then sighed, released Catherine’s wrist, and shook her head in resignation.

Catherine patted Princess Freya’s plump arm reassuringly, smiled, and turned to walk defenselessly towards the edge of the roof where Dillie was. As she approached Dillie, she heard him muttering in an unintelligible language, continuously talking to himself.

"Damn it, where’s my Italian cannon? No, my recoilless anti-tank gun and my grenade launcher, I really should have bought some of these models. Shit, shit, shit, where the hell do you even buy these models? I’ve never seen them when I was at the model shops," growled the scorpion-tailed lion, scratching the ground in annoyance and then grumbling," If I knew I was going to end up here, I would have spent all my savings on thousands of tank models regardless of their quality. Heck, it wouldn’t be this hard now. Stupid, just stupid, knowing what I know now, why would I bother with tank models? Would’ve just bought action figures of girls, could wipe them out with a whack of a curry stick. Hmm, a single curry stick won’t clear the field, maybe two, or just blow it all away with a double-barreled magic cannon. Dumb, just dumb, why didn’t I buy action figures before, they can fight and warm the bed, slurp, my saliva."

"It seems the battle is not going in our favor, Mr. Dillie," Catherine, not understanding Dillie’s language, still managed to ask calmly, "How should we coordinate with you?"

"The war has just begun, I still have reinforcements coming," Dillie responded instinctively, then suddenly turned around as if he had thought of something, and blurted out a question the girls could never have anticipated, "How did you guys end up here?"
