Chapter 1146: Chapter 258: Catherine’s Dream Fragments
Catherine had not completely lost consciousness; she was now trapped in the midst of a nightmare, a very long and persistent nightmare. In the dream, the once beautiful and warm world never existed; everything and everyone had undergone fundamental changes—changes that were too much for the knight girl to accept. The dream was so real that it felt like the truth, as if everything she had experienced before was nothing but a fantasy she had constructed to escape from reality.
In the dream, the girl still lived in the Western-style house on Fox Street, still striving to help everyone in need around her. However, whenever she stepped out of her house, the happy and joyful faces of neighbors no longer greeted her, nor did she receive genuine gratitude from those whom she helped. Instead, all she encountered were the cold alienation and malicious speculation of those around her, with nothing more.
"Don’t get close to her anymore, don’t be as foolish as she is," parents educated their children, "Think about it: what do you get from wasting your time on such unnecessary things? It’s always others who benefit, but the time you give is yours, and you’ve got plenty of it. It’s better to learn something new, turn your time into capital for your future. You’re not getting any younger, you can’t stay immature like her forever. Learn to be more mature. Don’t be like her."
"Why do you think she helps our family? Do you really believe she’s kind enough to agree to let us delay our rent by two months? Do you think she really considers our wellbeing to agree to lend us three hundred gold coins?" Couples argued among themselves, "Don’t be naive. The rich have different thoughts than you. If she didn’t agree to let us delay the payment, and we had to move out after, the room would be vacant. She’d have not only to clean it herself but perhaps spend months finding a new tenant, resulting in more lost rent. Use your head. If she thought like you, you might actually deserve to live in that house."
"Do you know why she can afford such a big house? Do you know why she often stays at home doing nothing and never runs out of money?" People whispered on the streets, a conversation not lost to the ears of Upper Rank professionals, and their sleazy, malicious expressions did not escape the professionals’ eyes either, "Think about it: how did such a young and beautiful person achieve so much in just a few years? Heh, I’m not making random guesses, I haven’t said anything, just think about it yourself. But let me tell you, if you turned into a woman and became as pretty as her, you could do the same."
"She’s trying to atone, seeking peace of mind," an old man who had just greeted her with a smile said to his companion, "Her family has money, but who knows how they got it? Heh, if they hadn’t done something bad, how could she be so young and buy an entire street? Although I haven’t seen it myself, I’ve heard her family has done nothing good for generations. Think about it, if she weren’t guilty, why would she pretend to be kind to everyone? Hmm, if she really wanted peace of mind, she should distribute her money to those who have none. Right now, she’s just putting on a show."
The fragments of the dream flashed by, and the hypocritical faces and malicious eyes started to fade away. The girl saw herself pushing open a big door and entering a familiar room filled with the odor of magic materials mixed together. It was somewhat pungent, yet not unpleasant. On the big bed in the room, Vivian lay limp, her unconscious body thin as a skeleton, her once rosy cheeks now withered and sunken. Her sparse hair was scattered on the pillow, and even her breathing had become intermittent and faint.
"Sister, sister, I can’t breathe," Vivian seemed to sense the presence of the knight girl and struggled to open her blurry eyes but couldn’t manage, gasping, "I don’t want to die, save me, save me. You have the power to save me; I don’t want to die like this. Please, save me."
The knight girl bowed her head and gently took Vivian’s hand, which was ice-cold and rigid, like grasping a dry bone.
"Sister, don’t let me die like this. I want to live," the immobile girl struggled, "You have a way, there must be a way."
At some unknown point, the Nightmare Spirit that had once left a deep impression on Catherine appeared before her, along with the captivating Sigein and her healing device standing behind her. The two Phantoms revolved slowly around the girl, as if to remind her of their presence.
"I’m sorry, my sister," Catherine heard her own choked voice, sounding so unreal, "I would sacrifice anything to save you, even my soul and my life. Yet, I don’t have the right to sacrifice the souls of millions to save your life, no one does."
"I understand, maybe you’re right," Vivian’s gasps grew fainter, her voice lowering, "But I hate you, I will hate you until my death, and I will never forgive you, never."
The scenes in the dream changed again. The familiar yet cold room vanished from Catherine’s sight, slowly transforming into a temple-like structure. At some unknown point, she followed a white-haired priest girl, running frantically toward the interior of the temple, while behind them, a voice stated coldly what had already happened.
"Ten days ago, Betty the ascetic, after enduring endless regret and self-blame, finally chose to end her life amidst suffering. Her body was found in the room that had always belonged to her sister."
With a "bang", Lina pushed open the door in front of her, and the scene within the room appeared before Catherine’s eyes.
It was a tiny bedroom with a short bed, small tables and chairs, and walls adorned with naive yet lively graffiti. Fuzzy, adorable toys were placed on the bed, and the pink sheets were printed with various poses of little animals, their big eyes brimming with moisture that made one feel an indescribable pity. But in front of the bed, a girl who looked exactly like Lina was prostrated on the bed in a kneeling position, motionless. From the side, one could see that a dagger had been deeply plunged into the young girl’s chest, with her Blood Offering staining her coarse clothes red.
"After Betty’s death, the Archbishop and the Dean, both grieved beyond measure, passed away from illness within three days of each other. The funeral for all three is scheduled to take place in three days."
"I don’t need your comfort," Lina said, brushing Catherine’s hand off her shoulder forcefully, her eyes filled with an ice-cold hatred, speaking as if to a stranger, "It’s because of you, because of being by your side, because of adventuring with you every day, that this happened. If it weren’t for you, maybe I would have come to my senses sooner, maybe I would have come back already, and then my sister, grandpa Archbishop, and aunt Dean wouldn’t have died. It’s all your fault."
"I... I..." Catherine struggled to bear Lina’s fierce hatred, unable to utter a single word.
"I don’t need your hypocritical comfort. Don’t think I’ll ever forgive you," Lina pointed at Catherine’s face, her teeth clenched as she spoke with venom, "Remember, I will never forgive you, I will hate you, hate you for a lifetime, heh heh, heh heh, starting today, I don’t want to see you again, I will only be with my sister, together forever, never to be apart, heh heh heh, hahaha."
In her dream, Catherine saw Freya again. The princess was as noble and beautiful as she had been years before. However, that beautiful princess seemed to have become a slave to Passion and Indulgence, lingering day and night at banquets and balls, moving between the rooms of different men. The once elegant and pure aura had gradually vanished with the passing of day and night, replaced by licentiousness and madness. When confronted with her former sister once more, the princess’s gaze was filled with indifference and contempt as she said scornfully, "You didn’t expose Wesker’s conspiracy, you personally delivered me into his hands, because of you, my love was shattered, my world collapsed, it’s all your fault. I hate you, I will always hate you."
In the dream, Catherine saw Ava, forever expressionless, the doll-like beautiful artificial girl now covered in wounds, being attacked by a multitude of powerful foes. She wanted to step forward to help her, but she couldn’t move at all, as if her body wasn’t her own anymore, only able to watch as Ava’s wounds grew more gruesome and fatal.
"Kill her, she is a Triclops spy planted in our world, she’s in cahoots with those Undead," the attackers shouted, "We can’t let her go, if we do, the Undead will invade again, the world will be finished, kill her quickly!"
Perhaps sensing Catherine’s gaze, Ava turned her head and looked at her coldly. The artificial girl’s emotionless eyes seemed to convey a message, "Why, why did you reveal my identity, why, I hate you."
The dream kept changing, twisting. Catherine saw Passion and Indulgence chopped into pieces, saw Rachel holding Nicole’s corpse, saw Michelle and Ansha with their vocal cords cut and legs severed, saw Annie and Little Deer purified, saw Pansy and Mimosa back in the City of Innocence being hunted madly by crowds; and not only that, she saw the City of Knowledge aflame, Neutral Land reduced to ruins, and a dead silent Yarran World.
The girl’s heart became increasingly chaotic, so chaotic that she didn’t even notice a person she had never seen before, it seemed.
In the end, the girl seemed to be back on that rainy night, the night she heard the news of her parents’ death. After calmly sending her home tutor away, the girl stood motionless outside in the rain, her long hair soaked, her face washed not only with tears but also with rain.
"The rain is so cold," the girl in the dream sighed faintly, hugging herself.
The next moment, a figure appeared without warning in front of her, hugging her increasingly cold body tightly, forehead against forehead, and kissed her deeply on the lips.
Taken aback, the girl suddenly opened her eyes.
