Chapter 1132: Chapter 245 Attack
The gigantic fireball tilted upward, passing through the low door without hitting anything, burning its way into the sky. As the fireball left the house, Lina rolled and slapped the ground, causing a hard rock to suddenly rise from the ground and block most of the door, leaving only a small gap for observation. However, the rock had just risen when Lina dispersed it and sent it back underground because through the gap she could clearly see that the enemy was not pursuing. Meanwhile, Catherine and Pannis were already standing outside the door, blocking the enemy’s path of attack. The pursuer was Freya, not chasing Lina, but the enemy, because after not hitting the target, the enemy had fled far away, their body flickering a few times while running, and in the blink of an eye, they had vanished from sight. The energy bullet that Freya released in pursuit traveled a great distance before it exploded weakly in the air, not even grazing the enemy’s shadow.
"What is the enemy?" Lina tapped on the armor behind Catherine. The knight girl guarding the door then moved aside two steps to let the two out from the mud house. Lina wiped off her sweat and said anxiously, "That was close, just a tiny bit more, and if the enemy was a little faster, my neck would probably have an extra hole in it. What kind of creature is it, so fast and so strong? The force I enhanced with my Divine Spell was like a joke before him, not even as good as a blown leaf."
"I didn’t see it clearly either, it was too fast. I only saw a white shadow, but it vaguely felt like a humanoid creature," said Catherine, biting her lip with self-reproach. "We were too careless this time. Although I reminder ourselves to be vigilant at all times, this relatively safe environment still made us relax our tension. Luckily, although we encountered an attack, we did not face real danger, which reminds us of our complacency. If we don’t adjust our attitude, what happened to grandfather’s team might become a precedent for us."
"The speed was indeed excessively fast, the only thing I can confirm is the color white," said Vivian, pushing aside Lina who was blocking the door, and stepped out from behind her, "Actually, when that idiot was satisfying their curiosity, I was already very cautious and observing our surroundings. But perhaps the opponent was too well-hidden, I did not detect any sign of life, nor did I hear any sounds. It seemed like it rushed out from the other intact hut, though at the beginning I glanced inside through the door and didn’t notice its presence. It must have been clinging to the inside of the conical roof, intending to ambush us."
"Even I did not get a clear look, only a blurry afterimage," said Freya, putting away her massive crystal energy gun with a serious tone. "And I found that he seems to have the same ability as Ava, able to freely move through this cluster of Shattered Space. Ava, could this have something to do with your Geological Research Institute?"
Ava gave the princess a glance, keeping a stoic silence, not saying a word, but only pointing at Pannis.
"It’s unrelated to the Geological Research Institute," Pannis sighed after seeing Ava’s gesture. "And it’s normal that you can’t sense the presence of life, because the enemy has none, not belonging to any living creature."
"Undead? And one that can ambush and sneak attack, just like the attack on my grandfather’s team?" Catherine exclaimed, letting slip something she did not want to recall, "Could this also be controlled by Lady Nellie?"
"Hey, big sister," Lina gave the knight girl a look of disapproval, "Not every undead with Divine Wisdom is related to Lady Nellie, right? Your imagination is a bit too rich."
"It’s hard not to make such an association," since the name was mentioned, Catherine didn’t try to hide her thoughts and spoke directly, "The last expedition was also attacked by the self-aware undead, and later it was proved to be controlled by Lady Nellie. Now we have encountered it too; it’s not abnormal to think of her, is it? The only thing abnormal is why they would attack us. We pose no threat to the Yarran Continent; there’s no need to attack us unless... unless she wanted to stop us from going deeper, but that doesn’t align with what she has been doing over the past few years."
"There’s no need to guess anymore, it wasn’t Nellie," Pannis shook her head, completely rejecting Catherine’s speculation, "That fighting style doesn’t belong to Nellie, otherwise I would have recognized it at a glance. So it must be an ordinary undead with Divine Wisdom, or maybe, Nellie had once used his body?"
"Eh, are you saying, it’s one of the undead that once attacked my grandfather’s expedition team, and after Lady Nellie’s will left it, it settled down here in this area?" Catherine pondered and spoke, "That’s certainly possible, but it’s just speculation. Although you can be sure it’s not Lady Nellie in control, there is no actual evidence to support that it is the same undead from before."
"How many sentient undead do you think there are, aimlessly wandering into the Forbidden Area for Living Beings and risking being assimilated by Twisted Souls," Pannis said calmly, "Moreover, finding evidence is actually very easy. Ava, you should still be in sync with Cyrie, which number was it again?"
"Cyrie-0005," Ava’s expression maintained its impassiveness, showing no change, but her voice hinted at slight annoyance. However, she responded promptly, "Until we leave this Fragment Area, I will be in a synchronized state."
"Cyrie-0005 should have recorded the attacker’s image. It uses machinery, not eyes, and since it’s a recording, even high speed should still be captured on film, as long as it’s not faster than the device’s frame rate. So a comparison would do," Dillie idly drew circles on the ground with her tail and explained, "What’s a frame rate? How should I know? I’m not a professional. How to explain to you guys? Just consider it a term from my homeland, and that should do."
"Entry update, frames," Ava responded mechanically as if she already understood the meaning of the word, but she didn’t explain it to everyone, probably because it would be difficult to explain without any other theoretical basis. Instead, she simply replied, "Response from Cyrie-0005, target shadow detected, playing now, beep, playback complete, thank you for using our service, looking forward to our next meeting."
"Um, actually, I think, there’s no need to report the process," Catherine said with a wry smile, "How is it, any results?"
"Multi-angle comparison shows that the encountered enemy has a 73% similarity to the small skeletons that attacked the expedition forty years ago, an absolute confirmation that they are the same entity cannot be made," Ava stated like a pure machine, "However, the system judges that they tend to be of the same identity."
"It seems there really could be a possibility that it’s the same skeleton," Catherine said with a start, thoughtfully, "Can you find out when it appeared nearby? Was it really left here since forty years ago?"
"No, after the attack forty years ago, they followed the expedition team and left, and have never again appeared within the image capture range of Cyrie-0005," Ava answered rigidly, "Seventeen days ago, it reappeared in this Fragment Area and since then, has settled in that mud-made room, not been seen since."
"Seventeen days ago? What could be the purpose?" Catherine mused bewilderedly to herself, "If it’s targeting us, but seventeen days ago we hadn’t officially entered the Forest of Death, it couldn’t have known we would definitely pass by here, if it’s just to ambush us that’s really too stupid, however, if the target isn’t us, there’s no reason for it to attack us and then turn tail and run, that doesn’t make sense."
"How can you say there’s no reason?" Lina retorted, "A reason is actually very easy to find, like maybe it has made this place its home, we suddenly barged in, searching here and there, and even wanted to enter its house, it might have thought we were burglars attacking it."
"Which novel did you get that story from?" Catherine rolled her eyes and said, "That reason is just too silly."
"This one here, called ’Necromancer,’ isn’t there a fast-approaching final battle with the Divine Servants? I thought maybe I could find some tactics within these stories," Lina said seriously, holding the book in her hand, "The stories of this author are very interesting, no no, I mean very insightful, let me see what his name is..."
"No need to look, it’s me," Dillie, lying on his front paws, mumbled, "I wrote it together with that idiot Christo, it’s adapted from stories of my homeland."
The knight girl didn’t bother with the completely untimely meeting between a reader and the author, and glanced at Pannis’ expression. Standing still, Pannis’ eyes lingered in the direction where the skeletons had vanished as if pondering something. Catherine sighed, patting Pannis on the arm and asking softly, "What’s wrong, what are you thinking so seriously about?"
"Actually, it’s nothing, I was just considering the purpose of its attack on us," Pannis, roused from his thoughts by the girl, forced a smile and said, "Even if it’s just undead, since it possesses Divine Wisdom, its actions should have a purpose, Lina’s speculated reason definitely isn’t realistic, so, what could its real motive be? And, since its attack didn’t succeed this time, will there be a next time? If there’s a next time, we really need to be more careful."
"Yes, there’s at least one more camp ahead," Catherine nodded, "If it attacks again, I’m very worried someone might get hurt, Ava, can you check if there are any ambushes in the next campsite?"
"Without a detailed time frame, I can’t search," Ava shook her head, "The data is simply too much."
"It’s okay," Pannis patted Ava’s head, "Actually, I was negligent this time too, we just need to be more vigilant next time."
