Chapter 1125: Chapter 238: Ava Who Loves to Study
"I just hope that what we find this time won’t be another corpse," Catherine said with a wry smile. Up to now, they had found three sites left by her grandfather’s expedition, and two of them contained corpses. The knight girl was now very worried that they would discover a third one at the location Ava mentioned. Although she knew all along what the final outcome of this expedition had been, she still hoped to delay facing that reality as long as possible. Even in Catherine’s heart, there lingered a faint fantasy; what if the former chairman had escaped and then some kind of accident occurred, or it was all just some big misunderstanding, and the expedition members were not dead but merely trapped somewhere, unable to return? Maybe they were still alive, and in that case, she might still have a chance to feel the warmth of family again. Of course, these were just fantasies of the girl, and even Catherine herself knew that it was absolutely impossible. It was precisely because she was so aware of this that her smile was tinged with such deep bitterness."There were no corpses there," said Ava, easing Catherine’s mind somewhat. "To be exact, they didn’t lose anyone that night."
"They didn’t lose anyone on the first day?" Lina asked on Catherine’s behalf. "Does that mean they lost members on the other days?"
"No, they didn’t," Ava replied, her mechanical voice even taking on a hint of reluctance as she voluntarily explained, "They were simply attacked but nobody died as a result."
"An attack in the Forbidden Land of Living Souls, so it was from Twisted Souls?" Pannis asked with some confusion. "Would they still be attacked while camping at night? I thought when camping they would choose an open area far from the Twisted Souls, and Twisted Souls, simply drifting without consciousness, shouldn’t be able to approach and then detect them."
"It wasn’t Twisted Souls," Ava shook her head. "What attacked them were two skeletons, or according to your classification, two Dark Knights, very powerful Dark Knights."
"Undead?" The girls looked at each other with eyes that could not hide their shock. If someone outside the team had made this claim, the girls would have doubted its authenticity. While the presence of Undead in the Forbidden Land of Living Souls was surprising, it was not shocking because the Undead were not troubled by Soul Assaults, and while they would still be subject to indiscriminate attacks by Twisted Souls, it was not impossible for them to be there. What was truly shocking was that the Undead had attacked an expedition from forty years ago, an expedition that included two members who were believed to be Mages of the Undead. Although the Mages of the Undead had lost their magic to control the Undead due to the fall of the Grimreaper, avoiding attacks from the Undead, this most basic ability, was something every Mage of the Undead should possess. Yet it was an expedition with Mages of the Undead that had been attacked by the Undead.
"Ava, I know you got it from the records of that research institute," Catherine asked very seriously. "Is it possible that the records of the institute are mistaken? After all, that Cyrie-0005 is not like you, sentient. She could’ve mistaken something else, like a special Twisted Soul that looks like a skeleton, as Undead, right?"
"I didn’t rely directly on the conclusions," Ava said, unoffended by Catherine’s skepticism, or perhaps, in her current state, the girl was unlikely to feel offense. Based on logical analysis, she even understood the knight girl’s doubts and therefore patiently explained, "I accessed the images; the conclusions were my own, not Cyrie-0005’s."
"Wait, images?" Lina gripped Ava’s hand, agitatedly asking, "Is there any way we could see those images?"
"No." Ava immediately dismissed Lina’s hope without hesitation, "Unless we enter the Polar Lake Geological Research Institute together, through their equipment you could share the imagery with you, or I could just return to my mechanical body now, other than these two methods, it’s impossible to project the images externally."
"Then, if we go back home to the Holy City, could you use your original body to let us see that footage?" Lina pressed on, "Even just some fragments would be okay."
"Although it’s quite troublesome, it indeed could be done. I just need to retain the complete data." Ava replied after a few seconds of silence, "However, retrieving the footage once back in the City of Knowledge is meaningless. It would just unnecessarily occupy resources and wouldn’t be of any help to this mission. Based on logical judgment, there’s no need to do so."
"Thank you, Lina." Catherine sighed, patted the priest girl’s bald head, and then patted Ava’s blonde hair, smiling faintly and saying, "Indeed, I’ve never met my grandfather, and I really wish I could meet him, but this is just a ordinary wish, not something important. So, as you said, Ava, there’s no need to waste your energy and resources on this trivial wish."
"But I’ve already saved it," Ava halted, looked up into Catherine’s face with an unfluctuating gaze, and said mechanically, "To clear the saved footage requires seven steps, which is even more troublesome, so let’s just keep it, we’ll handle it when we return to the City of Knowledge."
"Ha." Pannis tried to cover her mouth in advance but still let out a short laugh that earned Catherine’s glare, pointing at Ava she said, "I found out she really learned some bad habits. Now, even if she syncs with the Central Controllers, she would find excuses to shirk the tasks she doesn’t want to do."
Catherine pinched the girl’s delicate face with a feeling of helplessness, and spoke softly, "Thank you too, little Ava, for fulfilling this long-held dream of mine."
"Ha, ha, ha, I’ve accidentally deleted it, ha, ha." Ava’s sudden laughter was devoid of any intonation, and the following words left everyone, including Pannis and Dillie, in astonishment, watching the doll-like girl with a blank look, not understanding why she suddenly blurted out such a sentence. Ava gave a few more chilling laughs in the same tone, and emotionlessly said, "Based on logical analysis of many behavioral samples, I should use such a method to divert others’ attention, to alleviate the emotion known as shyness in consciousness, although such methods may come with unforeseen consequences, there’s no concrete evidence proving a necessary link between behavior and consequences."
"Many behavioral samples... I think we all understand," the girls said nothing, hanging their heads, Catherine felt the veins on her forehead throbbing violently, and through clenched teeth, she pronounced each syllable clearly, "Pannis! Look at what she’s learned from you!!!"
"I’ve never been shy, no, I would never behave like that," Pannis protested incoherently, "I’m innocent."
