Chapter 1123: Chapter 236 The Goblin’s Experiment
"Divine Descent?" Lina emitted a short gasp, covering her mouth in surprise and said, "Isn’t it recorded in history that during the Second Era, aside from the last extinction, there was no interaction between the Deities and goblins?"
"Such history is obviously incorrect. Although goblins only believe in their own technology and refuse to offer faith to the Deities, the authorities have never denied the existence of Deities. It’s just that many of the common folk, since they cannot see Deities with their own eyes, consider their existence to be fictional. The official stance has never affirmed this belief, of course, for certain reasons, and they didn’t deny it either. It wasn’t until right before the great catastrophe, as the entire race faced the possibility of war with the Deities, that the authorities had no choice but to affirm the existence of Deities while constructing underground shelters," Ava’s answer was blunt, with no embellishments or concealment: "According to goblin records, before the year 7528, Deities had actually descended twice. The first time was when the first Colossus was officially completed—perhaps the Deities were just curious. The second time was in the year 4625 during the Goblin World War, where almost every kingdom in the Yarran World took part, employing all sorts of weapons, and the number of deaths reached several hundred million. It must have been some life-associated Deities who descended then, but they did not seem intent on stopping the war; instead, they purified the polluted land and air after the war had ended."
"Perhaps it was from this second time that the Deities began to feel dissatisfied with the goblin race," Pannis sighed and said sarcastically, "Although they ended up doing the same thing, that was after all, a later event."
"The third descent was in 7528, when the goblins’ experiments were all set to go, but a main Deity of a certain lineage descended in person, not an affiliated deity nor a divine servant, and as for which one specifically, the name is left blank, impossible to ascertain." Ava looked vacantly into the air as if seeing some text, and continued, "However, the joint government was merely perfunctorily compliant on the surface and proceeded with that experiment. In fact, the goblins took that experiment very seriously because it was their first attempt at artificially altering space—if the trial had been successful, they would have been one step closer to creating space, even a world, themselves."
"Tsk tsk, they wanted to create not just life," Pannis clicked his tongue and said, "but even a world itself. The goblins wished for far too much, and if viewed from the Deities’ perspective, there might be just cause to want to exterminate them."
"The ultimate result of the experiment is, as expected, a failure," Ava said icily: "The failure was severe, with the entire expanse of space shattering, and the broken space even began extending outward, affecting an ever-growing area."
"Wait, extending outward?" Catherine interrupted Ava’s narration: "If it continues like this, isn’t there a danger of the entire Yarran World being destroyed? Spatial fragmentation is a very serious issue."
"The Deities had actually foreseen that the goblins might continue their experiments," Ava shook her head, "so when the experiment failed and the range of spatial fragmentation grew, the Deities finally took action and collaborated to control this trend, confining the affected area to the region we now see. Without their help, the goblins might well have been extinct by now."
"It seems this was the last time the Deities tolerated the goblins’ reckless behavior," Pannis rubbed his chin, his smile bizarre as he spoke, "Honestly, after learning this story, I suddenly feel a bit sorry for the Deities. Anyone with such troublesome neighbors would be greatly vexed."
"Yeah, if not for those two previous accidents, perhaps the Deities wouldn’t have reacted so strongly when Ava appeared," Lina, as a Clergy, naturally took the side of the Deities and said, "Even just for the safety of the Yarran World, they had no choice but to impose restrictions on this race. So Ava, the extinction of the goblins isn’t just because of you. I know you don’t talk about it, but you’ve always been troubled by it, it seems they did far too many wrong things, and their extinction was largely unrelated to you; you were only an innocent catalyst."
"What is the current state of this area?" Pannis gestured to Lina, naturally shifting the topic, "It doesn’t seem too dangerous, apart from walking being a little more tiring."
"This area is now comprised of countless accumulated fragments, but has returned to stability," Ava explained, "The only problem is that when walking on it, you’re constantly affected by the disrupted fragments. For instance, just now, when we tried to go back, we walked for quite some time, but upon looking back, we found we hadn’t even covered five hundred meters, precisely because most of our walking was within spatial fragments. As for moving forward to inadvertently speed up, it was because during that period, we consecutively passed through several spatial fragments, progressing in leaps and bounds, it’s just that with just our vision, we couldn’t tell."
"How big is this area exactly?" Catherine pressed on, "How long will it take to get out?"
"Actually, the extent is only this lawn," Ava replied, "What do you think, how large is the area of this lawn?"
"A few tens... no, a few hundred square kilometers?" Catherine asked tentatively, "It can’t possibly be more, can it?"
"However, in reality, the area of this lawn is 57,000 square kilometers," Ava said expressionlessly, "This specific number comes from Cyrie-0005 at the Geological Research Institute who has explored this deeply over the years. He has been executing a preset mission, thoroughly scanning every spatial fragment, hence the number is absolutely accurate."
"Good heavens, 57,000?" Lina exclaimed, "How could it be so vast?"
"All the spatial fragments are tightly overlapped, and adding up the surface area of each fragment gives this number," Ava said, "Of course, that doesn’t mean it was this large before, it used to be normal, about the size we see now. It’s become 57,000 square kilometers because of certain properties of the spatial fragments."
"Then how do we get through it?" Catherine asked, "Can we just keep going straight ahead to get past?"
"You could do that too. According to records, the last expedition made it through using that method, but they spent four days on it," Ava explained, "As for us, I can lead the way, and we’ll be out of here in no time."
