Chapter 1116: Chapter 229 Sunken Ship

"What on earth are you looking for?" Dillie walked along the lake shore through the grass, swinging his tail discontentedly, "I’ve been pulling the boat all afternoon, I’m very hungry now, so I want to have dinner, and I absolutely do not want to eat grass."

"Eating is easy, Lina, throw him a bone to keep him busy chewing on the side, hey hey hey, don’t bite, I’m doing something serious here, it’ll be done in a moment." Pannis struggled to pull his calf out of the scorpion-tailed lion’s mouth, even the pants got punctured by Dillie’s sharp teeth, creating a few small holes, but he didn’t have the time to complain. He kept moving along the lakeshore, constantly glancing around, clearly on the lookout for something but hadn’t said what yet.

"He must be looking for the boat," Catherine guessed what Pannis was after, "Only by finding the landing site of his grandfather’s team can we continue to follow their path. Whether it’s to look for temple clues or understand what exactly happened back then, it will be easier."

"Looking for a boat is not difficult." Dillie looked around to make sure there were no Twisted Souls, vigorously flapped his wings to take off over the lake, circled around the nearby area, then landed and said seriously, "Didn’t find it."

"Idiot." Pannis couldn’t care less to look at him, rolling his eyes, "They had twelve people, and so much luggage, think about how big the boat must have been. If it’s still on the lakeside, either we’re all blind or how could it possibly be unseen."

"Where else could it stop if not on the lake shore?" Dillie retorted, "As you know, with such a big boat, it would be insane to push it ashore. And if they pushed the boat ashore, are they planning to return or what?"

"If you were them, would you walk back over the lake when you return?" Pannis asked with a sneer, "Seriously, if I were them, I would never enter the Lake of Termination again without being fully prepared. Those goblins from the Second Era could do anything, who knows what kind of strange equipment might exist in this lake."

"Uh, that sounds right." Dillie was momentarily at a loss for words and could only mutter, "But there was still no need to push the boat ashore, isn’t that a waste of effort?"

"Of course, it’s at the bottom of the lake." Pannis suddenly pointed into the water, "There, I found it."

Looking in the direction he pointed, there was a dark patch in the clear water, unrecognizable at first glance, but upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a sunken ship. The construction of the ship was of the simplest kind, just much larger than a regular wooden boat, big enough to accommodate twelve people. Due to its great age, the wooden planks that constituted the hull had decayed and, for this reason, the ship had sunk entirely underwater. As for the other wooden fragments that had fallen off due to decay, they had long since drifted away with the lake waters to places unknown.

"It seems that they came ashore here." Pannis lay in the grass searching around the wreck, but forty years had covered all traces, the only finds being a decayed oar he held in his hand and a mooring rope coiled around a protruding rock beside it.

"Although they tied the boat to the shore, it’s clear they didn’t plan on coming back," Pannis didn’t dive into the water but observed the sunken ship from the bank. "This kind of boat, if they intended to reuse it for the return journey, would definitely be covered with waterproof tarpaulins nailed down, but look, there’s none of that on the surface. So, just as I suspected, they didn’t consider crossing the lake again on their way back."

"If that’s the case, then this ship probably isn’t worth searching." Catherine said with regret, "If they prepared to abandon it, they would have taken all their belongings and wouldn’t have left anything valuable behind."

"Actually, something would still be left behind." Before Pannis finished speaking, he jumped into the water; since his clothes were already soaked, he didn’t care about getting wet again. When he reemerged, he held up a mud-covered metal canister and said, "Hmm, indeed, something is left behind, like, say, trash."

"If it’s just trash, why bother bringing it up?" Catherine bent down, took the salvaged metal can, and looked it over several times but didn’t find anything special. However, the knight girl didn’t really think Pannis would do this out of sheer boredom, so after making a playful remark, she still inquired, "What exactly is this can? Is it strange?"

"Someone among them was injured." Vivian glanced at the metal can and said, "It probably contains some sort of ointment, a type of Healing Potion specific to treating fractures. But we never use this ointment, no wonder you can’t recognize it."

"Their part-time priest Veena relies on such medicines to heal fractures? It must have been used as supplemental treatment during the three-day treatment interval," Lina said curiously, taking the metal can. "But how could you be sure what was inside just by looking at it?"

"Because it is a standard medicine produced by the Alchemy Guild, stored only in metal cans of a similar design," Vivian explained. "It’s not particularly stable and requires absolute protection from light and an airtight container, which is why it’s stored in a metal can. But all that was decades ago. Later, someone improved the potion, enhancing its stability, so a regular crystal vial sufficed."

"It seems that grandfather’s journey across the center of the lake was quite difficult," Catherine sighed. "They must have used it to organize their items for the last time on the boat and then left the empty can on board casually."

"It shouldn’t rain today, and the lake water won’t rise," Pannis sniffed the air and said. "Let’s stay here tonight. I’ve observed that the nearby Twisted Souls are all quite far away. Even if Philarx’s potion has expired, those creatures won’t detect us."

"Are you going to dive in?" Catherine asked. "There’s no need, right? Even if grandfather left some clues, after being soaked in water for decades, it’s not likely they can be found. The light is already beginning to fade, and it’s often hard to see those Twisted Souls in the water clearly. If any come close without you noticing, wouldn’t it just be a needless risk?"

"No worries, Dillie’s eyesight is actually better than mine. He’ll watch the surface for me; there won’t be any problems," Pannis shook his head. "You guys start setting up camp. It won’t take me too long to explore underwater. I’ll probably be back up by the time you’re done."
