Chapter 1114: Chapter 227: Cut Off

Atop the Lake of Termination, massive whirlpools spun wildly, drawing copious amounts of water into the depths of the lake. Heated by high temperatures below, the water was transformed into scalding hot water, before it erupted from other places on the lakebed, spouting upwards. Between the whirlpools and plumes, a wooden raft skillfully dodged the tearing of the whirlpools and the slapping of the giant waves, moving with the agility of a swimming fish.

In fact, the raft was not small, boasting a deck size of over forty square meters. Even accommodating more than ten people would not seem crowded. But amidst the environmental anomaly, in the face of enormous whirlpools and towering waves, the raft appeared incredibly tiny, as if a light touch would tear it into pieces.

"Left side, here comes the wave," Lina and Ava, seated at the center of the raft, had the priestess girl wave her left hand and call out loudly, "Starboard, brace for additional weight."

"Legion, Barrier." On the left side of the raft, a scaly Light Curtain appeared, resembling countless shields overlapping one another. The column of water formed by the spray of the waves struck directly onto the Legion Barrier. As the wave broke into a spray of droplets, the Legion Barrier was also crushed by the formidable force of nature, disintegrating into countless points of light that dissipated into the void. Catherine grunted and stumbled backward several steps, falling onto the raft.

Although the Legion Barrier systematically reduced a great deal of damage, the overwhelming power brought about by the environmental anomaly was not something that human strength could counter. The residual force of the wave, through the Legion Barrier, was still fully transferred to the body of the knight girl. Even with Legendary Rank power, point-based penetration of the waves was simple. But withstanding the full force of the wave was still a strain. After several defenses, a trace of blood had already appeared at the corner of the girl’s lips.

Even with Catherine acting as a buffer, a portion of the wave’s impact was still transmitted through Catherine’s body to the raft. Despite three small boats beneath serving as a counterbalance, the raft began to lean towards its left side. However, as soon as it started to tilt, the raft regained its equilibrium. On the other side, Vivian had released her Gravity Spell, targeting herself and Freya next to her. Vivian was light, but the princess could evidently compensate for this deficiency. The combined weight of the two, plus most of the supplies, increased severalfold under the enhanced gravity, just sufficient to counteract the force of the waves, preventing the raft from capsizing. But the resulting problem was that ominous creaking noises began to emanate from the raft.

"There’s a whirlpool ahead to the right," warned Dillie, the scorpion-tailed lion, who had returned to his usual size at the bow, "thirty-five meters in diameter."

Because of his position at the stern, Pannis found it difficult to have a clear view of the water’s surface straight ahead, so he simply closed his eyes. Though his eyes were closed, the chaotic environment around him became even clearer in the darkness before his eyes, thanks to sound, the movement of air, energy perception, and cues from his companions.

The pole in Pannis’s hand moved lightly, causing the raft’s bow to shift slightly to the left. What had been an almost direct approach to the whirlpool’s center now became a diagonal entrance to the whirlpool’s edge. As soon as the raft entered the whirlpool, it was caught in the crazily accelerating current and surged forward with the direction of the water flow.

"Now is the time," Pannis’s muscles were taut, and the blue veins on his arms bulged, clearly indicating that his strength was at its limit. For demigods standing at the pinnacle of mortal creatures, countering nature’s force with their own power was not difficult, just like Dillie and Pannis could completely rely on Aggression to shatter part of the giant waves. But preserving the raft below and protecting the girls of Legendary Rank from harm was not so simple, requiring their full effort. Pannis cried out loudly as he pushed his wooden pole hard towards the lakebed, "Vivian, it’s your turn."

Vivian tossed aside three empty potion bottles with one hand and pointed her magic staff at the water beside the raft with the other. From her mouth, a single syllable emerged, sparingly uttered, "Freeze."

A solid sheet of ice unreasonably appeared on one side of the raft, with a third of the vortex frozen by this ice sheet. For a moment, even the surface of the vortex ceased moving due to the ice. Although the ice sheet only held for a second before being shredded into fragments by the formidable force of nature, the raft, which had been on the edge of the vortex and accelerating under its power, broke free from its constraint due to this one-second pause and shot out at an unimaginable high speed. Even the vortex, as it resumed expanding, could no longer recapture the raft within its domain.

"Everyone get down," Pannis yelled, using the vortex’s force to accelerate the raft to its limit and abruptly falling forward, and then bellowed, "Quick, all of you get down."

No sooner had everyone ducked than a series of Chaotic Fragments consisting of various geometric shapes skimmed over the raft, the long pole in Pannis’s hand even pierced through the bodies of two such fragments. But protected by Philax’s potion, so long as there was no direct physical contact, the Chaotic Fragments could not sense normal souls and thus did not react. Hence, the eerie geometric figures leisurely circled in the air, allowing sudden water spouts to pass through their bodies unaffected, as if they and reality existed in two separate spaces.

"Just hold on a little longer." Dillie at the bow seemed to see hope, turning back to growl, "It seems only the lake center has these environmental changes, I can already faintly see calm waters."

"Your range of vision is all vague, which means there’s at least three kilometers left, hold tight, grab onto the luggage secured beside you, be careful." Pannis’s aura suddenly surged wildly, almost visibly whirling around his body, and the wooden pole in his hand issued faint bursts of light. At the peak of the brightness, Pannis roared and thrust the pole hard against the bed of the lake.

With his skillful effort, the bow of the raft suddenly lifted, followed by the stern, and eventually the entire raft broke free from gravity and flew more than ten meters through the air before crashing back down onto the water. Just where it leapt over, a vast expanse of Twisted Souls clung close to the water’s surface, too large an area to go around in time.

Fortunately, the raft and the bottoms of the three boats were made of sturdy enough materials that even such insane maneuvers didn’t cause the raft to split in half or come apart entirely, but the girls could hear the raft beginning to groan under the strain, suggesting that another such stunt could send everyone swimming in boiling waters.

However, calm waters were now close at hand, and with the speed of the raft, they’d soon arrive. But just at that moment, Pannis cleared his throat and said hesitantly, "There’s something, I’m debating whether or not to tell everyone."

"What’s wrong?" Seeing the calm waters nearly in reach, Catherine asked with a sigh of relief, "What did you discover now?"

Pannis lifted the long pole in his hand with a bitter smile. The pole, which measured over twenty meters, could no longer hold together even with the support of Aggression after the erratic maneuver and had snapped into two pieces at one third of its length, leaving only a six or seven-meter-long short pole in Pannis’s hand.

"It... broke."
