Chapter 1109: Chapter 222 The Burial Ground on the Opposite Shore of the Lake
"To be honest, I didn’t understand," Catherine patted her helmet and said with a bitter smile, "I have no idea what the two types of Twisted Souls attacks you mentioned actually are."
"Well, take the Twisted Shadow for example, It’s originally just a shadow lying on the ground, but once you come into contact with it, the shadow starts to transfer to your feet. If you quickly leave its range, you’ll be fine, but if you give it enough time to transfer its main part onto your feet, then you can’t shake it off," Pannis explained somewhat troubled, "Sticking to your feet like a birthmark, unless you cut off that piece of skin and muscle, or chop off the foot, you cannot get rid of it."
"What about those lines?" Lina pressed, "How do they stick?"
"In theory, it’s pretty much the same. For example, with a humanoid outline, they will form a human-shaped frame that wraps around your body," Pannis drew a circle along the side of Lina’s body, "Like this, imprinted on your body, unless you cut off the skin and muscle in this whole circle, otherwise, you can only wait for death."
"If it’s not human-shaped, does it stick to the body like a tattoo?" Lina remembered what Pannis had just described and frowned, "It feels pretty strange. What if it’s wider than me?"
"Actually that’s just my guess, because I’ve only seen it once and it was human-shaped. I haven’t seen a beast-shaped one," Pannis shook his head, "But there’s another theory that suggests their lines will change according to the shape of the target’s soul. If the other’s soul is human-shaped, they’ll turn human-shaped as well, which is also a possibility."
"What happens if they attack you?" Catherine asked what was most critical, "What kind of reaction will there be?"
"I don’t know, I have no interest in experiencing it firsthand," Pannis spread his hands, answering reluctantly, "Those who have been attacked by it, in the records of past generations, not a single one survived, so to this day no one knows exactly what their assimilation methods are. But whatever it is, I don’t recommend you try it."
"Of course, I won’t try," Lina rolled her eyes and said, "I don’t want to become as ugly and eerie as they are."
"Let’s not discuss those things for now," Catherine clapped her hands to draw everyone’s attention and asked earnestly, "We’ve already delayed a lot of time here, which way should we go next? Where is the Graveyard?"
"The path leading further on from here is even less clear to me," Pannis shook his head, "I have never entered these areas, so I know very little about the roads. However, judging from the shape of the originally normal forest outside, we can roughly infer the general shape of these three connected Forbidden Lands of Living Souls. Based on that, the location of the Graveyard is probably at the northeast corner of the Lake of Termination. From our position, it’s across the lake; we just need to cross the Lake of Termination to get there."
"Why do you have that expression?" Catherine asked curiously, "You look stunned."
"Because crossing the Lake of Termination is not an easy task," Pannis shrugged and said, "I’ve heard that there are roughly three paths to choose from if you want to reach the Graveyard: left, middle, and right. The left path is the safest, just walk along it, and as long as you can avoid the roaming Twisted Souls in time, there’ll be no risk. But it has an obvious drawback, that is the time it consumes is just too much. The Lake of Termination is too big, walking the left path would take about four to five days."
"That’s way too long," Catherine said with a laugh, "What about the other path? What’s different?"
"If we go right, the terrain is very complex. There are swamps, cliffs, and chasms, which could appear at any time and pose certain risks," Pannis explained. "Especially along the way, there are countless types of Twisted Souls. Imagine you’ve managed to build a bridge over a large chasm, only to have a group of Twisted Souls appear as you reach halfway across. This possibility is not unfounded, and the likelihood of it happening is not low. As for the time it takes to travel the right path, it would be about two to three days, depending on our luck whether it’s two or three."
"There’s another path through the middle, right?" Catherine asked. "Do we make a boat and row across?"
"Exactly, the third route is through the middle, the shortest distance, we could spend the night on the other side of the lake tonight. However, that route has the highest risk. The things flying above, each one is a threat; if we were on land, it would be feasible to skirt around them and continue on, but it’s not the same in a boat, since controlling a boat is not as nimble as walking, it’d be tough to cleverly avoid them all," said Pannis. "That’s pretty much the situation with the three routes. As for which one to take, I’ll leave that judgment to you."
Catherine furrowed her brows again; indeed, it was a difficult choice to make. If the priority was speed, naturally the lake would be the way to go, but the dangers of the lake were an unavoidable issue. The knight girl paced in place for a while before asking, "Pannis, if we take the safest route on the far left and march as quickly as possible, minimizing rest, could we keep up with the pace of the right path?"
"At best, it would take three days, but more likely four, and it would be very exhausting," Pannis nodded and smiled. "It seems you already have a preference."
"Well, if it’s about the same, then the dangerous land route on the right can be excluded," Catherine said. "The right may be slightly faster, but the difficulty is much higher. Why opt for that when you could choose an easier path? So the choice naturally lies between the left or middle passageways. Now I’m just hesitating whether the left or middle is slightly better. Do you have any suggestions?"
"Don’t forget I’ve never been here either, so it’s hard for me to give a very accurate suggestion," Pannis shrugged nonchalantly. "But if it were me, I’d choose the middle."
"The reason?" Catherine pressed. "Surely this decision isn’t made just by tossing a die at random."
"It’s simple, because the lake route isn’t as dangerous as one might imagine," Pannis said. "As for why I say that, I think you’ve overlooked an issue, so I must remind you."
"What issue haven’t I considered?" Catherine asked, puzzled. "I know you think that taking a potion from Master Fila at the crucial moment could get us smoothly across the lake, but if there’s a high density of Twisted Souls, there’s still a good chance of being discovered."
"However, avoiding them isn’t so difficult," Pannis said with a mysterious wink. "You obviously forgot that when we need to evade them, we don’t necessarily have to stay on the surface. If the enemies are too dense, diving into the water to create distance can easily serve the purpose of avoiding their detection."
