Chapter 1090: Chapter 203: What Would You Do_2
After jumping down from the bamboo-constructed camp, when I turned back, the brightly lit camp had disappeared into the night, plunging the bamboo forest suddenly into darkness. Under the night sky, the bamboo forest was silent and eerie, with the faint sound of insects occasionally audible from afar. The tall bamboos were elongated by the cool moonlight, casting several strange shadows on the ground. In the breeze high above, the twisted dark shapes slightly swayed, intertwining with each other, forming patterns that set the imagination racing with fear and awe.
The Forest of Death was dangerous, and in the darkness, it was even more treacherous. However, for Flare and Pannis, who were skilled in wilderness survival, night was seemingly no different from day. They walked side by side through the bamboo forest, with the darkness barely affecting them at all.
In the dark bamboo forest, a silent atmosphere quietly spread between them. Flare had said they should walk together, and indeed, they just walked side by side. After nearly ten minutes of walking, neither of them had spoken a word, only the rustling of their footsteps continuously echoed in the bamboo forest.
"Kyle, I..." Flare’s voice finally broke the silence of the night, low and gentle in the darkness, like a soothing night song, irresistibly intoxicating: "I... the moonlight tonight is nice."
"Cough, cough, cough, is that what you dragged me out here to say?" Pannis coughed violently, almost becoming the first demigod to be choked to death by his own spit. Finally suppressing a cough, real or feigned, he shot Flare a peculiar look from his wandering gaze and turned to leave: "Then I’m going back."
"Hey." Flare glared at Pannis, her dissatisfaction evident: "No wonder all of them always chase after you to beat you up; you’ve become so annoying at times that I really can’t help but want to punch you."
"Alright, alright, I was just livening up the mood." Pannis touched his nose, walked back to his original spot, and said with a sheepish grin: "Just hold back, I can’t take your punches."
"Tsk." Flare wrinkled her nose, rare for her, and pulled a face at Pannis. Her exquisitely beautiful face filled with a flirtatious air. Disrupted by Pannis’s antics, she relieved herself from the awkwardness and tension, leaned against a massive bamboo, and twirled her loose green hair over her finger. Looking up through the sparse bamboo leaves at the sky’s three moons, she whispered softly: "We haven’t walked together and watched the moon like this for a long time, have we?"
"To hear the word ’long time’ from you is quite rare; I thought that word didn’t exist in the elf vocabulary." Pannis, mimicking her posture, leaned against the bamboo as well, sighed, and said: "Indeed, it’s been a long time, so long that it feels as if it all happened only in a dream."
"The handsome Ragnor, oh, the handsome Ragnor." Flare murmured a name from a legendary tale several times, suddenly staring at Pannis with a gaze as bright as the stars in the night sky: "If back then I hadn’t habitually delayed for those few days, and had just expressed my thoughts right away, things might have developed along a different path."
"Ah, that was three and a half years, not a few days, Your Majesty." Pannis let his shoulders droop in resignation, he sighed and said with a bitter smile while massaging his forehead: "And besides, there are no ’what-ifs’ in life, as after all, no one can control time and rewind it, so who knows what could have happened?"
"Is no one really able to control time?" Flare said with a light chuckle: "Maybe I should seek help from Philarx."
"Assuming you can find him," Pannis replied: "Theoretically, he’s already dead."
"But is he really dead?" Flare said leisurely: "If he was really dead, why would his followers have vanished?"
"Who knows, maybe those people agreed to go on a trip together," Pannis shrugged, unconcerned. "Those irrational mages, it’s not surprising anymore what bizarre things they do, right? Besides, compared to slipping into a crevice in time and ultimately mastering the laws of time to become an unknown deity, it’s more believable that everyone decided to go on a trip together."
"You, you’re just pretending to be foolish," Flare sneaked a disdainful glance at Pannis, her fingers playing with her green temple hair. "So you must also know, that mage you speak of as irrational no matter how much he changes, he still values everyone’s friendship. He wouldn’t really do anything that would totally betray everyone. You do know that, don’t you?"
"What exactly are you trying to say?" Pannis looked at Flare with a complex gaze and asked, "Why bring up Philarx all of a sudden?"
"Because I’ve been thinking about something." Flare’s eyes avoided Pannis’s gaze as she looked up at the dark sky. "Philarx made many mistakes, but I don’t think he would betray everyone’s efforts back then; as a witness to that battle, betraying everyone’s efforts would be like betraying himself. With his character, he would never do that. So, I can’t believe that he would collaborate with the Divine Servants’ moribund, sacrificing the souls of all living beings in Yarran World in exchange for his quest for knowledge. His pride wouldn’t allow it, unless..."
"Unless he believed that no matter what efforts the moribund made, they could not threaten the safety of the Yarran World," Pannis sighed. "He also said this to me before. He believed that the moribund were always working on a plan that could never succeed."
"You’re still pretending to be silly," Flare shook her head, her voice half-mocking, half-serious. "Then, you must already be very clear about what I want to discuss with you, aren’t you?"
"No, I’m not clear, not at all," Pannis shook his head vigorously, but murmured in a voice that only he could hear, "At least I hope that’s the case."
"Remember the last question I asked you before we left, at the King’s Court? Although your answer was that you hadn’t considered it, both you and I know you were lying, just avoiding reality," Flare didn’t expose Pannis’s lie but spoke softly. "You’ve already noticed, haven’t you? Many things are too strange, you guys have always seemed to have someone secretly helping you within the enemy’s ranks, allowing you to smoothly thwart the Divine Servants’ plan. I initially thought it was Philarx, but on reflection, Philarx couldn’t influence their decisions. So, who else could do this and has the ability to? Considering the Reversed Death Curse that has not been removed from you, the answer seems pretty clear now."
"Whew." Pannis exhaled deeply and hung his head in silence.
"Nellie is very likely still alive, or at least her consciousness might still have existed, originally so," Flare sighed. "However, the moribund now claim to have awakened Danacus, so how much of her consciousness remains, and how long it can last, is very difficult to ascertain. I heard from Aske about your killing one of the moribund, your expression was unusually angry, especially when you learned that they had awakened Danacus, showing an unusually fierce burst of rage. This was because you had already considered the consequences of their actions, hadn’t you?"
"Yes." Pannis’s breathing grew increasingly rapid, as though only by responding through his nose, could he hide the tremble in his voice.
"However, now we have to consider a possibility," Flare’s words seemed cold-hearted but were very necessary, and only someone as close as she could say them out loud. "If you truly have to face a deity using Nellie’s body for resurrection, not knowing how much of her remains, what will you do?"
"I..." Pannis opened his mouth but couldn’t continue to speak a single word.
