Chapter 1087: Chapter 202 The Clever Little Fox
"I think I understand now, we’re probably in that kind of situation," Catherine nodded thoughtfully, "The Deity’s will is protecting our souls, so the will of the Deity is our souls’ protective Shield, beyond that. For soul attacks to affect us, they would first have to shatter the Deity’s protective will, something that is simply impossible."
"Exactly, that’s the fundamental reason why you aren’t harmed by soul attacks." Antuin, who had been silently scribbling on the bamboo floor with his finger, suddenly looked up and said, "I just did some calculations. Taking Miss Lina as an example, for a soul attack from the Forbidden Land of Living Souls to affect her, it would require a Deity’s Divine Power that is one and a half times stronger than that of Lady Denia’s. However, such a Deity does not exist. Therefore, even if Miss Lina lived her entire life in the Forbidden Land of Living Souls, her soul would not be twisted by a soul attack."
"Then what about the other type?" asked Catherine, "Pannis, you mentioned earlier that there are two exceptional cases, and we are one of them. What about the other one? Could it be an issue with the soul itself?"
"The other type is those individuals whose souls are unique enough, stable enough, that even if the Shield is breached, they can resist soul attacks for an extended period. The lucky guy mentioned in the example earlier is that type," Pannis explained. "These individuals are even rarer, and they don’t display any external characteristics, so even if someone possesses this kind of soul, they wouldn’t know without undergoing a test by soul attack. But who would perform such a foolish experiment just to see if they are that kind of person? For instance, if the result is negative, the only thing they would gain is a meaningless death. There’s no point to that."
"A unique enough soul, huh? I guess the reason I could come along is that I made use of that," Freya whispered, sneaking a piece of candied fruit into her mouth when no one was looking. After swiftly swallowing it under Catherine’s glare, she pretended not to see Catherine’s expression and changed the subject. "The fact that Annie’s consciousness is sleeping deep within my soul, artificially creating a soul with characteristics of the Undead, acted as a means to evade attacks targeting the soul."
"You, Ava, and that vehicle over there, you all were able to enter because of the special nature of your souls," Pannis habitually taunted Dillie, which only earned him a scornful expression. Scratching his head awkwardly and speaking sheepishly, Pannis continued, "Moreover, your specialty is different from the type just mentioned. That person can endure soul attacks for a long time, but they would ultimately succumb if they didn’t escape in time. But it’s different for you. You wouldn’t be attacked at all, as soul attacks would avoid you from the start. So, there’s no question of how long you can hold out."
"I wouldn’t recommend actually taking off your necklace to give it a try, though," Flare warned, noticing that Freya seemed to be seriously considering how long she could last without her necklace after entering. Startled, she quickly advised against it, "When it comes to the soul, apart from those soul scholar masters who once specialized in Necromancy, no one can really explain it clearly. If you recklessly try removing your necklace, it would be far too dangerous. I dared to test the boundaries of the Forbidden Land of Living Souls earlier because I was close to the edge and could retreat in a matter of seconds, but you might not have the same luxury. If you found yourself deep within the Pansy Woods and took off your necklace on a whim to test your limits, and something did happen, Odin would definitely hold me responsible."
"No? That’s a shame. I was hoping to let Annie out for some fresh air often after we go in," lamented Freya, gently touching the necklace hanging on her chest, sighing with a bit of sympathy.
That was Annie’s Memory Crystal, which still held the message left by her father, Bell. The little banshee preferred staying inside it when possible, as it was said to give her the warmth of home.
Over the past two years, the girls had occasionally taken the little banshee back to the research facility in Crying Cave, and she had already seen her parents’ remains. However, whether it was the girls’ pampering diminishing her remembrance of her parents or the little one genuinely maturing, at one point during a visit with her parents, the little banshee suddenly requested to bury them. The girls were worried for a long time because it meant that Annie had internally accepted the reality of her parents’ death, which could lead her to return to everlasting slumber. As much as it might have been a blessing for Annie, the girls were reluctant to lose the little one from their family. But soon, they were reassured, as following that, the little banshee went on chatting with her parents at their Holy City gravesite every few days with the Pansy and Mimosa sisters, and spent the rest of her time eating and playing as usual, showing no signs of seeking release.
"Who? Who’s calling me?" A tiny head suddenly popped out from Freya’s chest. Apparently, the little banshee had heard her name and came out of the Memory Crystal, not caring about how scary her appearance might seem, and looked around blankly before asking, "Sisters, are you calling me? Is it time to eat?"
