Chapter 1080: Chapter 195: The Invisible Attack
"Be careful." Pannis’s eye twitched as he shouted, quickly pulling Vivian into his arms and rolling several times on the ground, while loudly calling out, "Catherine, Lina."
While hearing Lina’s name, although having no idea what was happening, Catherine’s support charge had already been activated. She instantly appeared beside the priestess, grabbing Lina and fleeing from the spot at high speed. However, nothing happened, no attack, no enemy, not even a sound. It was all eerily quiet, but the girls never thought Pannis had made a mistake, as they noticed the demigods had already maxed out the strength of their shields, seemingly ready to forcibly defend against some power.
"Freya, twenty-five degrees southeast." Pannis spoke urgently, "Defend as fast as you can."
Without any hesitation, Her Highness swung her arms; copious amounts of parts flew from various sections of her body. Under Freya’s control, the parts moved and assembled in the air, and when they touched down, they had formed a metallic wall. Though hollow, the wall made from goblin metals possessed strong defensive power. However, the wall’s defense seemed ineffective , or rather, its effectiveness was not very apparent, for although behind the metal wall, Freya suddenly felt a wave of palpitations and dizziness, a nauseating sensation rising in her chest. Barely suppressing the nausea, Her Highness then felt her lips heat up, and when she touched them, she found her hand smeared with a good amount of blood flowing from her nostrils.
"Seize this chance and go," Pannis said, picking Vivian up from the roll and standing up, already rushing toward the Dancing Tree he had spotted earlier, while urgently urging, "Charge as fast as you can, it’s safe under the tree."
The cluster of Dancing Trees was not far from the team, only a little over fifty meters away. However, those fifty meters appeared to the girls as a line connecting heaven and hell. Seeing that even with the double protection of the metal wall and Legendary Rank shields Freya was mysteriously injured, the girls didn’t feel their own defenses were much stronger than Her Highness’. Therefore, none of them knew if they, too, would be able to be just injured like Freya if the next attack hit them. However, contemplating this had no meaning anymore. Since Pannis’s order was to rush as fast as possible, and since Pannis believed it was the best choice, then it certainly had to be the best choice. The girls completely abandoned any intent to defend and closely followed behind Pannis in a frantic charge forward.
With a "whoosh," Catherine, pulling Lina, suddenly felt a breeze brushing past her ear, a familiar arrow shot out from behind her, skimming her cheek and taking a few strands of her black hair with it. The arrow was faster than the knight girl, heavily embedding itself in a tree trunk. Only then did Catherine notice a small snake, almost the same color as the tree bark, pinned to the tree by the arrow, wriggling for a few moments before it stopped moving completely.
"Even in such times, we must not forget to be alert to our surroundings," Pannis, ahead of her, didn’t turn around, but seemed very aware of what had happened behind him, and while continuing his sprint spoke, "This is the biggest difference between top-tier adventurers and ordinary adventurers. By developing such habits, one earns the right to rank amongst the elite adventurers. Alright, we are safe now."
Catherine’s left shoulder lunged forward and heavily collided with the Dancing Tree, finally dissipating her own impact while Lina was even less fortunate, completely unprepared for Catherine’s abrupt halt, crashing headlong into the scale-armored back of the knight. Luckily, her Shield was active, preventing a tragedy of a flattened nose. Looking back, Freya was still less than ten meters behind, not having entered the range of the Dancing Tree, but Pannis seemed not worried at all because a huge figure was already guarding behind Freya.
The scorpion-tailed lion Dillie had, at some unknown point, grown to a height of around five meters, standing like a wall of flesh at the rear of the group, requiring any attack targeting the front to get past his body first. However, it might be that the attacker knew further attacks were futile and discontinued them, or perhaps they had attacked but the girls were totally unaware. In any event, Freya also managed to escape within the range of the Dancing Tree; her nose still bleeding, staining her collar red as the princess paused, panting, just about to say something when Lina forcefully pulled her aside, bestowing several Healing Divine Spells upon her.
Only after confirming it was safe did Catherine finally have the opportunity to ask, "What exactly did they use to launch the attack? Why did Freya get severely injured without any warning? And the attacks on Vivian and Lina were also completely invisible."
"Let’s lower our guard for now and make some adjustments," Pannis did not directly answer but was the first to remind everyone. Hearing his reminder, the girls cautiously deactivated their Shields and began to focus on recuperating their energy. Pannis glanced at the distance and size of the surrounding Dancing Trees, leading the team closer to the center of the whole grove. Freya, having just recovered, assembled a dozen simple metal chairs from spare parts for a temporary rest. Sitting down on one of the chairs, Pannis then answered, "Their attack is just like that, a huge roar as a mere deception, but the real attack is hidden underneath the roar. As you’ve seen, there is no sound, no form, no motion, and those hit can hardly sense it, suffering internal severe damage. I’ve heard of the most severe case where a long time ago, a Legendary Rank professional faced simultaneous attacks from several deceivers, and his head was internally exploded into a mist of blood. So Freya, your defense did work, it was just not evidently effective, but some defense is definitely better than none. If it wasn’t activated in time, we all would have witnessed a mist of blood. As for what their attack really is, sorry, we have no idea. However, I presume it’s related to sound, just that it’s a type of sound normal people can’t hear. Although invisible and inaudible, you can still perceive it from the changes in the air flow and energy fluctuations before the attack occurs."
"Idiot, it’s clearly a high-frequency sonic attack, which most creatures can’t hear," Dillie, having returned to his normal size and lying next to the Winged twins, scornfully said, "You didn’t even know that."
"High-frequency sonic attack?" Catherine asked puzzledly, "What’s that?"
"Who knows, I only know the name," Dillie said while licking his paws, "It’s just local dialect from our homeland. It’s normal that you haven’t heard of it."
