Chapter 1063: Chapter 178 Charge, Unstoppable
The phantom hooves beat against the solid ground, yet the soft grass passed through their ghostly images without interference. The horn sounded, flags waved, and the fearless knights lay low on their horses’ backs as they charged toward the enemy line under a sky darkened by a volley of arrows. This was the first time Catherine had not joined the knights in their charge. She knew her mission was to be the team’s strongest shield, blocking all ranged attacks for her companions and striving for a chance to break through. Therefore, at this moment, Catherine commanded her knights like a seasoned Commander, courageously fighting, even if it meant using their bodies to block the arrow storm, even if it meant once again facing death and returning to the void.
The Arrow Mice clearly could not understand why there were suddenly hundreds of steel-clad enemies before them. These enemies, clearly much weaker than themselves, seemed to exude an aura of fear when banded together. But obeying the Rat King’s command was the innate instinct of every Arrow Mouse. Even if the enemy’s numbers had multiplied by dozens of times, the Arrow Mice still followed their given instructions, desperately using their thorns to hinder the enemy’s advance.
The first collision occurred. It was difficult for even the shields of professionals of Legendary Rank to block all the thorns of the Arrow Mice. Even demi-god shields could be penetrated due to their piercing properties, let alone a group of Gold Rank knights. The knights’ Gold Rank Aggression Shields were quickly shattered under the dense rain of arrows, the impact of the arrows reducing their number by a third.
But the knights did not waver, nothing could stop their charge. To knights with unwavering belief, even if they no longer had shields, even if their metal armors were pierced by thorns, "We still have our bodies, we still have our flesh. Our Commanders’ swords lead the way, and that is where we charge. Even if my flesh is pierced, even if my body scatters, the comrades behind me will continue to advance in my hoofprints, bringing us to our final victory."
Under the rain of thorns, the phantoms of dozens of knights at the front were filled with the hard fur of the Arrow Mice and, along with their horses, dissipated into smoke in the air. However, the knights who followed quickly filled their places, and the arrowhead formation remained undamaged. But this was not the end. The shooting speed of the Arrow Mice far surpassed that of any archer legion, and with enough numbers, they could sustain an unbroken offensive at range. Fortunately, their numbers were not immense, and the urgency of time prevented them from assembling more forces. Yet even so, the frequency of their attacks was still astonishing.
Three seconds later, eighty meters. The second collision occurred as expected, the swarms seemingly provoked to greater ferocity by the knights’ charge, making the arrow storm even denser. However, the charging formation of the knights became tighter as well, the phantom knights drawing closer to one another to protect those comrades who could catch up to their charging speed on foot. After the arrow storm, over a hundred more knights had vanished, but the expedition members remained unharmed and passed through one-fifth of the distance safely.
Six seconds later, forty-nine meters. Such was the power of the legion of Gold Rank knights, accelerating to the limit of heavy-armored knights within seconds, even beyond the limit to speeds unattainable by ordinary cavalry. However, the third collision was delayed. When the swarms attempted to shoot their thorns again, they encountered trouble. A very ordinary feathered arrow flew over them in an arc. In the blink of an eye, it multiplied into hundreds, covering the entire area where the Arrow Mice were. Hundreds of arrows could not aim precisely, but the sheer quantity compensated for the lack of precision, leaving many Arrow Mice under the threat of arrows.
Clearly, the only person who could counter the Arrow Mice with archery was none other than Queen Flare. It’s incredibly challenging to initiate a ranged attack while sprinting, and only the most skilled rangers could achieve precise shots. As for the precision of a volley of arrows, such a top-tier ranger ability, you would probably only find a handful of people capable of that in the entire Yarran World.
However, Flare wasn’t actually doing anything quite so complicated. Though she was the one attacking, she did not sprint herself; unbeknownst to when she started, Queen Flare gracefully sat on Pannis’s shoulder, just like they often did years before. This way, she could maintain speed and still focus on launching her ranged attacks.
After all, the Arrow Mice weren’t a real army. Under the Queen’s counterattack, the instinct to survive overpowered the commands of the Rat King. The white mice, screaming, scattered in all directions to avoid the arrows, plunging into chaos. As a result, not only was the third wave of their attack delayed, but the few hundred scattered spikes were mostly blocked by the knights’ Aggression Shields. After this round of attacks, only a handful of knight Phantoms dissipated without a trace; it could be said that the knights’ formation was virtually unscathed.
Nine seconds later, at four meters, with a whole three seconds to react, the Arrow Mice still couldn’t organize a fourth wave of attack. Although Flare’s volley of arrows had long been ready, the previously disordered Arrow Mice tried to launch the third attack anew, but the appearance of dozens of Throwing Spears made their efforts utterly futile. The Throwing Spears, launched from Alcmene’s hands, almost replicated the effect of Flare’s arrow volley, with the sole difference being the quantity.
While there were fewer Throwing Spears, their power was incomparable to that of arrows. Even though most were nimbly dodged by the Arrow Mice, when the spears plunged into the ground, the massive force carried by their shafts shook the earth. Each spear created an explosion-like effect, and many of the mice close to the spear’s impact were sent flying or even killed outright by the shock.
The legion of knights finally charged successfully into the Arrow Mice’s territory. Due to the enemy’s small stature, it was hard for knights to injure them with impacts, but the unrelenting and heavy iron hooves could trample on their bodies. Although categorized as Legendary magical beasts, the Arrow Mice’s strength was only localized in their offensive power. If comparing physical resilience, they were on par with ordinary Gold Rank magical beasts. Such resilience meant that one knight’s trample could hardly inflict substantial damage, but after the stampede of a couple hundred knights passed like a tide of steel, all that was left on the ground was a slurry of flesh. The surviving twenty or thirty Arrow Mice screamed as they scattered in all directions, daring not to confront again.
