Chapter 1010: Chapter 125: Elf’s Sacred Items
After Flare disappeared and then reappeared in new clothing, the girls were astonished to find that she seemed like a completely different person. In reality, visually speaking, she was still the same person except for a change of clothes; there were no other changes. However, if one used energy perception to carefully sense it, they would find that not only had her majesty’s power surged by more than double in an instant, but she seemed to have merged with the entire forest. Every single plant in the forest appeared to be acting on her will, making it impossible to distinguish between the plants and the queen herself.
For a Demigod, an increase in strength by twice could have an exponential impact on combat effectiveness. Even without considering the restriction in the Inherent Psychic Domain that a Demigod could only fight one-on-one, just considering normal combat strength, a Demigod whose power had doubled could handle four or five of her former selves. By those calculations, Flare was now virtually an invincible entity in the Yarran World.
"Is it so strange?" Pannis cleared his throat and nudged Catherine’s arm with his elbow, waking the girls from their astonishment and explained in a low voice, "Think about Lina, remember her Earth’s Praise? If she were to ascend to Demigod status and achieve perfect harmony with Earth’s Praise, how much would her strength increase?"
"Could it be, is her staff also a Sacred Item?" Lina asked doubtfully. "Aren’t the Sacred Items of the Elves only the Lifespring Ring?"
"Not just the staff," Pannis shrugged. "Yuktiraxil, Artemis, and the god of life, Ksolo’s generosity and adoration almost drive many from other churches insanely jealous. But it’s no wonder, the Forest Gods who created the elves have three major Deities alone, unlike other churches which have only one major Deity. So those people can be jealous all they want but there’s not much they can do. Look at her, she is carrying almost all Sacred Items now: the Lifespring Ring atop her head, a gift from the god of life Ksolo; the garment she’s wearing, Call of Leaves, enhances an elf’s control over plants, obviously a blessing from Yuktiraxil; and the leaf shoes on her feet are Hunter’s Elegance, which can greatly obscure the wearer’s aura when needed, making it hard for enemies or prey to detect her—no need to ask, these shoes are a gift from Artemis. These three items, besides their special functions, each significantly enhance the wearer’s strength, just like your Earth’s Praise."
"What about the staff?" Curious Lina couldn’t forget that peculiar staff, its design was strange, resembling a tree with dense roots at the base and several branches at the top, and surprisingly, there were even some green leaves on the branches. Lina, peeping at the staff, asked quietly, "I always feel there is something unusual about this staff."
"It’s definitely not ordinary, especially since it’s the Heart of the Forest," remarked Pannis. "This staff is a Sacred Item crafted jointly by the three chief Forest Gods, allowing the holder to merge with the entire forest, receive consciousness feedback from all plants in the Lost Forest without time and space restrictions, and even control most of the plants within the Lost Forest. Moreover, it also enhances the forest’s power to the holder, allowing their strength to make a qualitative leap. Thus, as long as this staff exists, there is no possibility of extinction for the elf race."
"Such powerful abilities?" Catherine frowned. "The more you get, the more you have to pay. To use such powerful abilities, the cost must be significant, and there must be many restrictions."
"Well, there are only two restrictions," Pannis shrugged. "First, it’s only effective within the range covered by the World Tree; second, only elves can hold the staff. Other races holding it would inevitably suffer Divine Punishment, and even other elves can only hold it, not use it. Only the Elf Queen blessed by the chief Deities is qualified to use it. Any other being attempting to use it would be regarded as blasphemy."
"That’s already a lot, isn’t it?" Catherine said in exasperation, giving Pannis a stern look. She asked, "And the cost?"
"Most of the functions have no cost," answered not Pannis but Flare, who was holding the staff. Despite the distance and Catherine’s soft voice, Flare seemed to hear their conversation clearly as if she had become omniscient, taking it upon herself to explain, "Even if there is a cost, it can be offset by the powers that the Heart of the Forest grants me. The only real cost arises when controlling all plants in the Lost Forest without restrictions. This price is severe: the user’s life. Thus, this function is only used when the elf race or the Lost Forest faces destruction. Fortunately, from the Third Epoch to today, there has never been a need to use it."
"I figured as much," Catherine sighed. "No matter the item, it seems unlikely to support the energy needed to control the forest without drawing on life to fill the gap."
"But it’s a price worth paying," Flare said. "To sacrifice one’s life in exchange for rescuing an entire race’s fate, I think any leader of a race would be willing to pay that price."
"Indeed," Catherine’s gaze drifted to the exceptionally tall deep-sea royalty, Doris. Seeing her naturally brought to mind a deceased priestess whom the knight girls will forever remember, the Priestess Amphitrite who had single-handedly fought several demigods for the survival of the Sea Race, sacrificing her own life and enduring thousands of years of pain and loneliness in darkness, yet never regretting her actions. For a knight who sees such self-sacrifice for faith as the highest honor, such a hero was indeed worthy of admiration.
Seemingly sensing Catherine’s gaze and knowing what she was thinking, Doris suddenly turned back to the knight girls with a smile and nodded towards Pannis. Turning back to see Pannis looking bored and scanning the surroundings, Catherine’s eyes softened, and a warm smile slowly appeared on her lips.
