Chapter 1007: Chapter 122 Plant Civilization
"Pat, pat," Flare gently tapped the trunk of the World Tree twice, "Come on, I’ll take everyone into the Royal Palace to rest for a bit."
"Still the vines?" Catherine recalled the surprise she felt when she first saw those strange vines on the yvelin tree and teased, "It feels like your use of vines is almost evolving into a kind of civilization."
"Actually, we originally belonged to a plant-based civilization," Flare did not take it as a jest but seriously said, "In the earliest years, we did not use Crystal Energy but relied on magic and race-based talents to develop our race, and the majority of our work was completed by plants, so it is not an exaggeration to call us a plant civilization. It was not until the end of the Third Epoch, as the War of Faith intensified, to enhance the combat strength of our entire race, that we had to start learning to use Crystal Energy for war. It must be admitted, though war is always accompanied by a bloody process, senseless sacrifices, and meaningless outcomes, it paradoxically serves as the greatest driving force for the progress of a race."
"It’s just that, for the sake of victory, we had to evolve, and when facing life and death, intelligent beings can always do things far beyond their capabilities, but compared to the cost required for warfare, I don’t think these incidental gains are worth it," Catherine shook her head, about to say something, but suddenly looked up with a bitter smile and said, "It really still is the vines, huh."
What Catherine said wasn’t entirely accurate; what descended from more than eighty meters high, from the lowest canopy, wasn’t exactly vines. It was several small houses woven from the vines, similar to the deer carriages that Elves used when visiting. Although the houses weren’t actually small, accommodating ten people inside without feeling cramped, they could only be considered small next to the gigantic trees and the vines at least five meters thick on the top of the houses. Owing to the thick vines connected to the elevator-like small houses, they did not sway back and forth in mid-air even without a track. Yet, even so, once inside the elevator, the girls still felt waves of unease; creatures that live on the ground all year round, when suddenly leaving the solid earth, always feel this kind of insecurity, unable to shake off that instinctive fear, even knowing there would be no danger.
Since those irrelevant companions had already dispersed, Pannis quickly reverted to his original demeanor, casually pulling out a hard-shelled dry fruit from his pocket and cracking it open, lazily saying, "Speaking of these Elf Forest-exclusive elevators, I’m suddenly reminded of a story. Elves always boast about their elevators being very safe and never having had an accident. However, as far as I know, there was once an incident; I almost forgot about it until I came here."
"Hey, Brother Kyle, even if you can see their unease and want to comfort them, you don’t need to bring up our story," before Pannis could finish, Maya, a Light Winged Human who entered the same elevator, protested with a flushed face and wings almost turning red with dissatisfaction, "It was just one elevator at Sister Flare’s house that got damaged. You’ve been teasing me about this for over a hundred years."
"Yeah, yeah, we even agreed to try hard to forget this," Tiya also pouted, saying, "But then it gets brought up every now and then, never forgotten at all."
"And the purpose this time was to ease their mood." "Exactly, it’s downright unforgivable."
The words of the Winged twins made the four girls blush simultaneously, glaring angrily at Pannis with their eyes, but though Lina blushed, she could not resist the curiosity in her heart and inquired, "What did you do back then? How did you break the elevator? And isn’t the World Tree indestructible? How could it be damaged?"
"The vines grow by climbing the World Tree." "They are not part of the World Tree." "So they can be broken." The Winged twins habitually spoke one sentence each, their empathetic communication making the priestess feel waves of envy. As twins themselves, Lina and Betty were also empathetic to a certain extent, aware of each other’s thoughts, but they were still unable to communicate as seamlessly as the Light and Dark Twins. Maintaining their conversation in an almost single-minded manner, the twins quickly continued, "Originally it was just our first time riding the elevator." "So, we were a bit scared." "We wanted to try flying inside it." "We thought, if we kept floating and the elevator fell, we wouldn’t get hurt." "We forgot we were in a confined space." "Although spreading our wings was fine, flapping them to take off required big motions." "As a result, our wings kept hitting the walls of the elevator." "When we flap our wings, the power is actually quite strong." "Especially since we are Demigods, the power is even greater when we flap." "Then the walls broke, and we fell out." "It’s just that simple, nothing funny about it at all."
"Ha," Lina couldn’t help but let out a short laugh, quickly covering her mouth and struggling to suppress the laughter, saying, "Indeed, being worried about falling is quite normal. It’s the person who laughed at you that should be despised."
Though poor Pannis was unjustly scorned once again, he accomplished his goal. Along with the Winged twins’ performance, while they were not able to alleviate the girls’ instinctual unease, they effectively distracted their attention. By the time they realized, they found the elevator had already ascended to the highest point and stopped, and the doors woven from vines automatically opened outward, revealing the path to exit.
The elevator skillfully stopped alongside a branch nearly thirty meters in diameter. The thick branch with its rough, uneven surface allowed people to stand very steadily, and even if someone fell, they would not roll down the inclined trunk.
Stepping out of the elevator and onto the branch of the World Tree, the girls found themselves in the midst of the canopy, surrounded by thick foliage above and below, with branches and leaves on both sides obstructing their view despite the relative openness.
Following behind Flare, pushing away the obstructive branches and leaves along the trunk, the girls had just taken a few steps when they stopped in shock, gazing upward in silence, unable to voice a word. As they parted the branches, a majestic complex of buildings, beautiful and intricate, filled with Elven characteristics, appeared suddenly within their view.
