Chapter 1005: Chapter 120 Little Fairy

Nearly a thousand people might seem like a lot, but when spread over one or two square kilometers, it actually seems sparse. Even with the addition of tables, chairs, and counters arranged in a circle a few hundred meters from the World Tree, the area still wasn’t significantly occupied. Beyond this open-air market sector formed by tables, chairs, and counters, hardly anyone could be seen. What accompanied the whole group on the side were only the air roots hanging from the World Tree. Although these were just air roots, they also had a diameter of two to three meters. Compared to the World Tree with a diameter of one or two hundred meters, of course, they were not considered thick, but these air roots were even thicker than the main trunks of many other trees. The surface of the air roots was rough, cracked all over, and many vine plants rooted themselves from where the skin had split open, relying on the World Tree to sustain their own lives. On the air roots grew many leaves, and it was then that the girls had the chance to closely observe the glowing organisms flying around the air roots, sprinkled with fluorescent powder.

They were a group of very odd creatures, with distinctly human shapes, but only as tall as an adult male’s index finger. They had dragonfly-like wings on their backs, and green hair like an Elf on their heads. As they flew, specks of fluorescence fell from their hair, leaving a trail of light behind them.

"Are these... fairies?" Lina hesitated for a moment, finally digging out the term from her memory and tentatively asked, "The kind often found in fairy tales, those who like to play with children and engage in mischief?"

"I also think they’re fairies. I’ve read about similar accounts in the literature several times, but I’ve never seen the actual thing. I thought it was just a legend. I didn’t expect it to be real." Vivian subconsciously drew closer to a little fairy circling in front of her. The little fairy was very beautiful, with the beauty of an Elf. If they removed their dragonfly wings and enlarged them dozens of times, they would be exactly like the form of an Elf. The observed little fairy fluttered its wings and hovered in the air, tilting its head and looking curiously at the gigantic creature drawing near. After gazing at one another for a while, the little one suddenly opened its mouth and spat a mouthful of saliva at Vivian. To call it saliva was a bit generous; it was more like a large droplet of water, carrying the fresh scent of plants, almost like a drop of tree sap. After spitting, the little creature quickly flew away from Vivian, making several butterfly-shaped loops in the air as if celebrating a successful prank. Yet, when it realized that Vivian’s gaze was following, it immediately hid behind the air roots, disappearing among the other fairies.

"Haha, she really likes you. They only play pranks on friends and children they like; they don’t bother with strangers," Flare said with a laugh, covering her mouth. "But you’re right to guess, they are indeed little fairies."

"Do these little fairies count as a race too?" Catherine reached out her hand towards a glowing orb, which disdainfully avoided the knight girl and circled around Flare before returning to its own kind. The young girl pouted quietly and muttered, "Their attitudes are really bad."

"Heh, they dislike the metallic scent on you, not you personally. Vivian, on the other hand, has many plant-based Alchemy materials on her, which is why they like her," Flare explained. "As for these little fairies, strictly speaking, they don’t quite constitute a race. They’re actually Elves as well."

"Elves?" Lina exclaimed in surprise. "That’s not possible, the differences between you are too great."

"No, Lina, look closely," Vivian shook her head and said, "Look at their appearance, almost identical to the features of Elves. I was just suspecting that they’re closely related to Elves."

"They are not closely related, they are the original Elves," Flare said with a statement of considerable shock, "At the beginning of the Third Epoch, when the Deity of the forest created life, the initial design of the Elves was of this shape, only their size was like ours, normal size. However, later the Deity discovered that normal-sized bodies couldn’t fly with such wings, and even if they managed to take off, the heat generated by their bodies would ignite them in a short time. So, the Deity had to keep reducing the size of their design, until finally these beings were born."

"No wonder you said they were the original Elves," Catherine nodded, "But why did the design change later on to become the way you look now?"

"Because even with the power of the Deity, they couldn’t make them smart," Flare said with a bitter smile, "They are lively, but not very intelligent. No matter how long they live, their intellect can only reach that of a one- or two-year-old child, just like a group of small animals. It’s said to be due to their brains being too small to perform complex thinking; whether that’s true, nobody knows. Later, with no other choice, the Deity reverted to the original design and removed the wings, and thus the Elves as we know them came to be. But these little ones, also the children of the Deity, were hard for the Deity to give up, so they were allowed to reproduce as well. However, since they were just prototypes with many defects, they could only live around the World Tree. Fortunately, their size is small enough and their thoughts simple enough, making living in this area bring them great joy."

"It sounds like you care a lot about these little ones too," Catherine said, looking curiously at a flying orb of light, "And they seem very close to you as well."

"Of course, we are sisters," Flare stretched out her palm upwards, and several orbs of light immediately flew to her majesty’s palm, cuddling against her slender fingers on her face as if they were greatly satisfied. Her majesty said with an affectionate smile, "After all, we come from the same origin, sharing the same bloodline; naturally, we are close to each other. We like them very much, and they inherently love us, just like true relatives."

"What a pity," Catherine said with a compassionate expression, "They cannot leave the World Tree and see the outside world."

"That might not be a bad thing, actually. If the Goddess wanted them to leave the World Tree, it wouldn’t be very difficult," Flare shook her head, "But in the end, the Deity let them stay as they are."

"That’s true, the outside world is indeed too dangerous for them," Catherine nodded, "And there are too few of them. If they truly left the World Tree, they might go extinct very quickly."

"So, it’s better for them to live here carefree," Flare said, "For them, this tree is their entire world, a true World Tree."
