Chapter 40 [Don’t Pretend]

Sure enough, just after coming out of the hotel, Chen Nuo received a call from Old Sun.

Speaking of which, Old Sun was quite vexed making this call.

But there was no helping it. His own little cabbage had returned home crying and sobbing.

Old Sun had to patiently ask several times before he finally understood what had happened after school that afternoon.

Old Sun really didn’t want to make this call.

If Chen Nuo were just another student of his, Old Sun was quite fond of him and genuinely willing to care for the kid.

But when it involved his precious little cabbage...

Old Sun felt that a little piglet like Chen Nuo deserved to be planted in the ground like a radish!

The problem was, his own daughter’s feelings for this boy had become clear as day over recent days; even a blind person could see it.

Old Sun had always been wary of it and guarded against it, thinking it was just a teenager’s budding affection for the opposite sex.

Just hold out for a year until the college entrance exam is over, and once the daughter goes off to university and they’re worlds apart, this matter would be forgotten.

But today, his daughter came back crestfallen and wailing, as if she had been abandoned.

Old Sun was so angry he nearly developed high blood pressure.

Was Chen Nuo some kind of young player?

After learning the details, Old Sun breathed a sigh of relief. Luckily, nothing he worried about had happened.

Subsequently, with one phone call, he summoned Chen Nuo to his home.

Upon entering, Chen Nuo saw Miss Sun sitting there silently with a stern face.

Old Sun, however, seemed as if nothing was wrong and amiably greeted, "You’re here. Come in and sit."

Chen Nuo smirked as he walked in, changed into slippers, and joined Old Sun on the sofa.

Old Sun even poured him a glass of water.

After all, Old Sun was an adult, and he wasn’t naïve like School Belle Sun. He leisurely inquired about Chen Nuo’s recent academic performance, then reminded him that he shouldn’t always skip classes for work and must not neglect his studies.

He continued to urge Chen Nuo to get along with his classmates and to avoid causing trouble.

Finally, he condemned the bad influences among some students at the school.

After all this talk, Old Sun casually asked, "What exactly happened this afternoon? Why did Zhang Linshan and those guys come looking for you?"

Chen Nuo answered in detail.

Well, Old Sun had nothing further to say. It turned out the root of the issue was his own daughter. Chen Nuo had ended up being a shield for her.

Now, he couldn’t blame Chen Nuo. In fact, he should be thankful to him.

"So...the transfer student from South Korea this afternoon, where did you meet her?"

Listen to that, this is skill.

The question wasn’t whether you knew her or not.

It directly asked where you had met her.

Setting the nature of the question straight, then pinpointing the details.

Luckily, Chen Nuo had smoothed things over beforehand.

Hearing Old Sun asking about this, Chen Nuo had a strange expression. "Speaking of which, it was indeed a coincidence. Just a couple of nights ago, I was at Brother Lei’s shop learning how to repair cars. This girl happened to be strolling nearby, and her car broke down. I fixed it for her."

Old Sun frowned. "She is a foreign girl, not very old, walking around on her own?"

"Of course not, there was an adult with her," Chen Nuo said. "But there was a language barrier. They couldn’t really express themselves clearly."

"Hmm, and then what?"

"Then, oh, I saw she was a foreigner, so I mentioned to Brother Lei that we shouldn’t charge her."

Old Sun’s smile was tinged with sarcasm. "You waived a car repair fee, at most ten or eight yuan, right? Is that why that little girl came to the school today and was so enthusiastic towards you... Hmm, towards you?"

Chen Nuo snickered. "Probably because I’m handsome."

"Don’t play around," Old Sun furrowed his brow. "Tell the truth."

Chen Nuo pretended to scratch his head, seeming embarrassed. "I just chatted with her casually, talking at cross purposes, and eight out of ten sentences were incomprehensible. Oh, she said, she said I looked like Yuan Bin, so she started calling me ’Oppa’."

Listen to that, that’s truly shameless.

Chen Nuo smiled again. "It seems that South Korean girls are like that. They scream and yell when they see a celebrity, and act like they’ve seen their idol when they spot a handsome guy... You have to understand, this country’s people have a die-hard pursuit of appearance. Otherwise, why would there be so many plastic surgeries?"

Old Sun pondered over this odd term "appearance" thoughtfully.

School Belle Sun, who was doing her homework nearby and eavesdropping, didn’t quite grasp Chen Nuo’s words.

But Old Sun understood.

Right, the language barrier, eight out of ten sentences incomprehensible—how could they still manage to chat about her thinking he looked like Yuan Bin?

So that means you guys chatted quite a bit!

I get it!

Young guys, when they see a pretty girl, just love to strike up a conversation.

All in all, it’s nothing too extraordinary.

Young people, when they see a beautiful woman, who doesn’t like to chat a bit and get friendly?

It’s not really malicious intent; it’s just a normal reaction for a young boy, being attracted to a notable member of the opposite sex.

Even Old Sun had a thought in his heart that wasn’t quite appropriate to voice out loud.

Well, if you love to chat, then chat away!

Go ahead and chat with all your might! And if sparks fly... well then, don’t come bothering my little cabbage anymore.

"Oh, about the incident the day before yesterday, Brother Lei was there too. If you don’t believe me, you can ask him and find out," Chen Nuo said with a wry smile. "I was just stepping in to help because I saw something unfair happening."

Chen Nuo said these things, trying to appear relaxed.

As for whether Old Sun would go ask Brother Lei, that was unlikely.

Such a matter wasn’t worth specifically asking about. Doing so would seem rather meddlesome.

Besides, even if he did ask, so what? With Brother Lei’s acting talent and his refined and amiable nature, Brother Lei wouldn’t hesitate in the slightest, not just to own up to this matter, but even if he were asked to call a long-legged girl ’Auntie.’

The conversation ended, and it was getting late.

Old Sun didn’t seem to intend to ask them to stay for dinner. It looked like he preferred to wait for Chen Nuo to leave so he could have a heart-to-heart with his daughter.

So, Chen Nuo stood up to say goodbye.

"Dad, I’ll walk him downstairs," School Belle Sun suddenly stood up.

Throughout the whole conversation, School Belle Sun was sitting not far away at the dining table doing her homework, her ears pricked up and listening in the whole time.

Now she suddenly stood up to walk Chen Nuo out.

Old Sun frowned at first, but then he saw in his daughter’s eyes a stubborn look that was entirely different from her usual self.

Old Sun sighed inwardly.

Maybe, letting the two of them clear the air would be for the best.

Chen Nuo was also slightly taken aback, but he didn’t say anything.

The two young people changed shoes and stepped out.

On the way downstairs, neither Chen Nuo nor School Belle Sun spoke.

When they reached the bottom of the stairs, before exiting the building entrance, School Belle Sun suddenly stopped. In the darkness of the stairwell, she, who had been walking beside Chen Nuo, moved half a step closer and wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.

Chen Nuo didn’t move.

In the pitch darkness of the stairwell, it was silent.

The girl’s body, soft and fragrant, pressed against Chen Nuo’s chest. He could even feel her heartbeat.

Chen Nuo hesitated for a moment. "You..."

But in the darkness, he heard Sun Keke leaning her head on his shoulder, speaking in a soft, weak voice that carried a faint trace of grievance, a hint of tenderness, and an unmistakable sense of a girl’s wronged feelings.

"...I haven’t hugged you like she did this afternoon..."

"..."

Seconds later, the girl lifted her head. Under the dim light, Chen Nuo could still make out Sun Keke’s face blushing profusely.

The girl quickly stepped back, then dashed upstairs like she was fleeing.

Chen Nuo, however, didn’t leave right away.

Standing there in the dark, not sure what was on his mind, he pondered for a moment, then sighed.

His thoughts were somewhat complex.

His feelings for Sun Keke were not quite at that point.

Not really at that point.

If it was only about physical attraction, sure, a man naturally lusts for a pretty girl.

But to lust after Sun Keke... given his relationship with Old Sun, he couldn’t possibly mess with his daughter.

And even deeper thoughts and affections... they hadn’t really reached that level!

After living through two lifetimes, how could Yama, with a heart so hardened, easily fall for a girl?

It was still lacking something.

So why didn’t he push her away just now?

Nonsense!

What man could claim they would push away a young girl in her prime, beautiful as a flower, soft and fragrant, who also clearly had feelings for you, when she pressed up and hugged you?

Don’t pretend!

Moreover... Hmm, the feeling of being close together just now... it’s really good to be a bit chubby.

·

That night, Zhang Linshan woke up next to a trash can in an alley.

Without a phone, he had no idea what time it was.

Leaving the alley, Zhang wandered down the streets, which were almost deserted by now.

The school was in complete darkness.

But what happened this afternoon... what was that about?

With a head full of questions, Zhang Linshan decided to head home first.

He had barely taken a few steps towards his house when he saw his parents coming down the road, searching for him.

He had just called out "Dad," when...

Zhang’s father rushed up to him and slapped him across the face!

"You good-for-nothing, you still know how to come back! Where the hell have you been? You’ve caused trouble again! The principal has even come to our house!"

Zhang was dumbfounded.

This...

If I say that I was carried off by a guy this afternoon, ended up falling asleep while he carried me, and only just woke up...

Would the old man believe it?

·

「The next day, at school in the morning.」

The homeroom teacher of Class 6, Grade 11, Mr. Wu, walked into the classroom with a long-legged girl dressed in a brand-new uniform from No. 8 Middle School.

An exquisite face, tall and alluring figure, and long, straight black hair.

All the boys in the class gasped.

Li Yingwan kept a straight face, and although her eyes softened when she saw Chen Nuo, she didn’t manage to smile.

Mr. Wu introduced her: "This is Li Yingwan, a student from South Korea. She will be studying at our school as an exchange student and will temporarily join our class."

The class was silent for three seconds.

No one knew who started it, but suddenly all the boys in the class erupted in cheers and applause!

Watching these boys celebrate like wild animals... the girls immediately felt sour.

Hmph, men!

When the class calmed down, Li Yingwan stood in the center and bowed.

Using her somewhat unsteady language skills, she said the line she had practiced for a long time.

"Hello everyone, I am Li Yingwan. I’m very happy to be here!"

Mr. Wu’s gaze swept around the class, where every boy he looked at deliberately puffed out their chests.

Unfortunately, his gaze finally settled on the empty seat next to Chen Nuo.

"Li Yingwan, please take the seat in the back row next to Chen Nuo," he said.

A collective sigh came from all the boys in the class.

Sun Keke’s eyelids twitched a few times.

The girl steeled her heart and took a deep breath.

"Teacher!"

Sun Keke stood up directly.

"Hmm? Keke, what’s wrong?" Mr. Wu asked.

Sun Keke bit her lip forcefully but raised her head to look directly at him and said, "The new student is a foreigner, and she might not be proficient in Chinese. Sitting in the back might make it harder for her to hear the lesson. Plus, she won’t be able to see the blackboard well from the last row."

SSS...

At this, quite a few boys and girls in the class inhaled sharply in unison.

Holy shit, the usually gentle School Belle Sun is really protective!

Luo Qing turned back and whispered to Chen Nuo, "Watch, the silent battle has already begun..."

After a pause, Luo Qing added, "Brother, you’ll have to thank me later."

Then Luo Qing stood up.

"Teacher! Let her take my seat. I’ll move back a row to sit with Chen Nuo."

Mr. Wu was feeling awkward about how to handle the situation. He’d been teaching for most of his life and understood these young boys and girls all too well.

Besides, he was already aware of the incident that occurred yesterday afternoon. Many students had seen it on the sports field.

But what happened later was a bit bizarre.

The girl from South Korea was hugging Chen Nuo, and yet Chen Nuo ran away carrying another boy?

What kind of plot is this?

Never mind. Mr. Wu pushed aside the burning flames of Bagua for the time being.

He nodded. "Let’s do that!"

Luo Qing stood up, took his backpack, and sat next to Chen Nuo, vacating his own seat.

Mr. Wu patted Li Yingwan on the shoulder and pointed to the empty seat, saying a few words.

Li Yingwan’s expression didn’t change; she turned her head, bowed to Mr. Wu, and then quickly walked over with her shoulder bag.

It was clear that the long-legged girl was happy... to be able to sit in front of Chen Nuo, so close.

Of course, because the language barrier hadn’t been crossed yet, she actually didn’t understand a single word about the silent battle for the seat selection. f.re(e) w.e(b)nov el.c.om

...Fortunately, she hadn’t understood.

·

It turned out that Luo Qing’s deskmate was actually the male class president of their class.

The class originally had mixed seating between boys and girls, and he ended up paired with Luo Qing, something he had always regretted in his heart.

But there was no helping it; the class had fewer girls than boys.

Who could have expected such a gift to fall from the sky? This beautiful and tall girl from South Korea, his new deskmate?

This peak of life, wasn’t it too thrilling?

Li Yingwan took a seat, rummaged through her bag, and took out her books and stationery.

The class president coughed and softly said, "Hello, classmate, my name is..."

SHH!!

Li Yingwan made a silencing gesture at him.

Then, she took out her pencil case.

There was a big sticker on it.

Well, a typical girl of this era would either have a sticker of Jay Chou or Nicholas Tse. Occasionally, you’d see someone with a Louis Koo sticker as well.

As for the girls from South Korea... the boy band Shinhwa hadn’t completely faded out, so their stickers were also quite common.

But the sticker on the long-legged girl’s pencil case...

The class president looked over and was stunned.

Dressed in a green robe, with a face like a red date, eyebrows like silkworms, his majestic beard fluttering.

One hand stroked his beard, the other held a broadsword!

What kind of broadsword?

An 82-pound Green Dragon Crescent Blade!

Oh my gosh!

The class president was dumbfounded!

What kind of taste did this girl from South Korea have?

It wasn’t over yet!

She carefully placed her pencil case, then sat up straight and patted her chest.

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

She patted her chest forcefully three times, then put her hands together and bowed reverently three times.

With a look of utmost sincerity!

The class president stared at his foreign beauty of a deskmate in astonishment.

He then turned around to look at the two friends behind him with a look of horror.

That expression meant: Did you see that?!

Luo Qing seriously patted his shoulder. "We must respect the religious beliefs of our foreign friends!"

Chen Nuo had already brought his hand to his forehead...

[Hey, vote if you should vote, reward if you should reward... BANG! BANG! BANG!

Some people say this book uses old clichés, something about a king of soldiers... I hardly read any of those soldier king books.

Besides, let’s not talk about being a soldier king or not.

It doesn’t matter whether a trope is new or old.

What readers really dislike isn’t the trope. They dislike poor writers who make the tropes in their stories crappy and stinky. So, it’s not the trope that people hate; it’s the bad writing.

There are no bad tropes, only bad writers.

As long as you get the right flavor, it really doesn’t matter if the trope is new or old.

That’s my creative philosophy.

Thank you for your support and for getting this far. Please continue to follow along.]
