Chapter 39: Chapter 37: [Feeling Unhappy]
Chapter 37 [She’s Unhappy Now!]
The Sun family’s house wasn’t large; it was in an old-fashioned apartment building, the kind built in the late eighties or early nineties. These old houses had one thing in common: the living rooms were quite small. The layout was regular, without any wasted space.
There were two bedrooms, one large and one small. Usually, Old Sun and his wife occupied the master bedroom, while the smaller room was School belle Sun’s private room.
Chen Nuo placed School belle Sun on the sofa to rest and then stood at the entrance of the hallway leading to the bedrooms. After a moment’s thought, he called out loudly, "Where’s your family’s medicine box?"
In that era, every family kept a medicine box at home, complete with a thermometer and some standard cold medicine, fever reducers, and anti-inflammatories.
After all, it was common for someone to have a headache or a fever. Ordinary people would often try to endure a minor illness on their own, taking some medicine before resorting to the hospital, which was usually far away. Besides, pharmacies weren’t as widespread then as they would be decades later.
Unlike twenty years later, very few people kept these items at home. With Meituan medicine delivery, items could be delivered right to your home—even condoms.
School belle Sun was dizzy. Indeed, she had a fever. She had managed to walk home, but once inside, leaning on the sofa made her even more groggy. She mumbled softly, "It’s in my parents’ room, under the dressing table, in the bamboo basket."
Chen Nuo hummed and, not bothering to hide the sound of his steps, deliberately walked with heavy, unhurried steps as he went over and grabbed the handle of the master bedroom door.
He opened the door forcefully and stepped straight in.
Without looking around, he headed straight for the dressing table.
Anderson’s figure, like a fish gliding through water, slipped out silently from behind the door to position himself right behind Chen Nuo.
He looked as weightless as a ghost; his feet seemed to touch the ground, yet his movement made him appear to float.
As Chen Nuo moved from the doorway to the dressing table beside the double bed, Anderson’s figure bizarrely shadowed him, always staying in Chen Nuo’s blind spot—a perfect visual dead angle. And he was utterly silent.
Anderson was quietly sizing up the young man before him.
He seemed quite young, dressed in a blue and white jacket, his muscles relaxed, and he dragged his slippers as he walked.
At this moment, the young man had his back to him, squatting and rummaging in front of the dressing table.
From his posture, his shoulder muscles were relaxed, showing no sign of alertness.
This is an ordinary person. In an instant, Anderson made his judgment.
Chen Nuo deliberately exposed his back to the other man, making no superfluous movements, even letting his muscles remain slack, making himself appear to be an oblivious young man entirely focused on searching through things.
In reality, however, right in front of him was the brass handle of the dressing table’s drawer.
The paint on the handle had worn off, revealing the brass underneath. In its reflection, Chen Nuo could clearly see a Caucasian man right behind him, watching intently, posed like a feline predator on the hunt.
Especially the steel needle pinched between the man’s fingers.
Chen Nuo’s eyes narrowed.
This is a master.
And... a foreigner? This is no ordinary burglar...
Chen Nuo found the medicine box and then stood up.
The moment he did, Anderson retreated with lightning speed, pressing his body against the wall. Then, as if defying the laws of physics, his body stuck to the wall...
...just like a spider, he retreated, climbed up the wall, and finally adhered himself to the junction of the ceiling and the wall!
Chen Nuo deliberately walked under him without looking up. For a moment, the back of his neck was exposed to the steel needle in Anderson’s fingers.
After leaving the master bedroom, Chen Nuo casually closed the door and returned to the living room.
He pretended to pick up the thermos and a teacup to pour some water. He opened the medicine box, took out the cold medicine, and fed School belle Sun two pills before helping her lie down on the sofa.
From beginning to end, Chen Nuo’s eyes were actually fixed on the master bedroom door.
A few minutes later, his brow loosened slightly.
He’s gone.
Chen Nuo thought for a moment, then lightly pressed a spot on the back of the already drowsy School belle Sun’s neck.
School belle Sun closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep, while Chen Nuo went back into the master bedroom.
He glanced around. The person had indeed left.
Chen Nuo frowned, went out to the balcony, and after scanning the area, noticed a small gap in the aluminum alloy window on the left.
He quietly opened the window, holding back his strength so it slid open without a sound. Chen Nuo leaped onto the windowsill, reached out to grasp the edge of the roof above, and, as agile as a civet, he glided up.
The Sun family lived on the fifth floor, so going up from there led to the roof.
The rooftop was empty; Chen Nuo had already swept it with a glance as he landed.
Nobody usually came up to the rooftop. The thermal insulation cement boards there were mostly broken and rotten, alongside some haphazardly placed air conditioning units and solar water heater equipment.
Chen Nuo ran around the edge of the rooftop at full speed, finally spotting a figure on the left side, about ten meters below, leaving at an unhurried pace.
The figure was wearing a hat, his hands in his pockets, and his clothes were the same color as Chen Nuo had seen reflected on the brass handle.
He quickly scanned the surroundings. This apartment building stood starkly isolated. There were no other residential buildings nearby, only a factory in the distance.
Chen Nuo flipped over the side, holding onto the external drainage pipe, and slid down. The whole process took less than a dozen seconds.
After landing, Chen Nuo quickly shed his school uniform, wadded it up, and casually threw it into the nearby bushes before quickly following the figure.
Anderson’s walking pace was quick. Though his head was down, he hadn’t relaxed his vigilance. At a few intersections, while waiting for the lights to change, he made a point of checking behind him.
Once assured of his safety, Anderson confidently changed direction, heading toward a hotel. Even before reaching it, he stopped and went into a small supermarket by the roadside to buy two bottles of mineral water.
Half an hour later, Anderson entered the hotel lobby.
Standing under a distant streetlight, Chen Nuo watched Anderson’s figure disappear into the hotel. At the exact moment Anderson entered, Chen Nuo clearly saw Anderson’s face reflected on the floor-to-ceiling glass wall.
Chen Nuo squinted.
Standing still, after pondering for a few seconds, Chen Nuo turned and left.
---
School belle Sun woke from her deep, sweet sleep, and her first reaction was: Where is he?
She tried calling out, "Chen Nuo?"
At the kitchen door, half a head popped out, his young face wearing a cute and harmless smile. "Awake?"
The head retracted. Shortly after, Chen Nuo came out with a bowl of white porridge, gently placing it on the coffee table in front of the sofa.
He turned back into the kitchen, took out a small bowl, and placed it next to the white porridge.
In the small bowl was a pile of shredded pickled vegetables, which had been peeled with only the tender hearts shredded. Beside it, there was a small pile of pork floss.
Ignoring the girl’s dazed look, Chen Nuo reached out and touched Sun Keke’s forehead.
"Hmm, no fever. How do you feel?"
The girl’s face flushed with shyness, and she turned her head away from Chen Nuo’s hand and said softly, "I’m okay, just feeling weak."
"You’re weak because you’re hungry." Chen Nuo pushed the bowl forward a bit. "Eat this. It’s already past three in the afternoon, and you haven’t had lunch. Of course you’re feeling weak."
Sun Keke looked at Chen Nuo, a little dazed. Then, as if something had occurred to her, she suddenly blushed, quickly lowered her head to pick up her chopsticks, and obediently started eating.
After the meal, Chen Nuo helped her into her room and onto her bed, then shook down a disinfected thermometer.
"Open your mouth, ah..."
The girl laughed shyly. Chen Nuo had her put the thermometer in her mouth, saying, "Take it out after three minutes."
He then left the bedroom.
School belle Sun lay on her small bed. Her door wasn’t closed, and she could hear Chen Nuo tidying up the bowls and chopsticks in the living room, followed by the sound of him washing them in the kitchen.
Her face started to turn red again.
Hmm... It seems this is how life normally is at home, with Mom and Dad here...
The shy girl curled up.
After washing the bowls and chopsticks, Chen Nuo returned to the bedroom, checked the time, and took the thermometer out of the girl’s mouth to check it.
"Just under thirty-seven degrees. Hmm, the fever is gone. It’s probably just a minor cold," he said.
As he spoke, Chen Nuo went to draw the curtains.
The curtains weren’t made of blackout material; they just made the room a bit darker.
"If you can sleep, sleep some more. When you’re sick, more sleep is best; it’s very restorative."
The moment the curtains were drawn, the girl blushed uncontrollably again, as if something had occurred to her. She pulled up the comforter to cover half her face, leaving only her eyes showing.
But in the next instant, Chen Nuo pulled the comforter down.
"Don’t cover your face when you sleep. Aren’t you afraid you’ll make yourself sick or have trouble breathing?"
Saying this, Chen Nuo turned to leave the room.
"You... are you leaving?" Sun Keke called out weakly.
"..." Chen Nuo turned around, looking at the girl’s bright eyes, and hesitated for a moment before saying, "I’m not leaving yet. I’ll watch TV in the living room after you fall asleep. Just call me if you need anything."
Sun Keke sighed with relief, watching Chen Nuo leave the bedroom. Then the TV in the living room turned on, and a faint sound came from it.
The girl stared wide-eyed at the ceiling, her mind wandering, lost in thought for a while.
Eventually, weakened by her illness, her eyelids grew heavy, slowly closed, and soon she fell asleep.
School belle Sun woke to find the room pitch-black; it was clearly nighttime.
The door to her bedroom had been closed at some point, but through the door, she could faintly hear the voices of Old Sun and Yang Xiaoyi speaking outside.
School belle Sun got up and, without even bothering to put on slippers, opened the door and walked out.
In the living room, Old Sun and his wife were discussing something when they saw their daughter run out.
"Keke, you’re up?" Old Sun asked.
School belle Sun was silent. Her gaze swept around the house, but she didn’t see the young man’s figure, and a sense of loss welled up in her heart.
"Where’s Chen Nuo?"
Upon hearing that, Old Sun’s eye twitched slightly, and he sighed before replying, "He left in the afternoon, after your mother came home from work."
Yang Xiaoyi caught sight of her daughter’s bare feet and hurried her along, "Why are you walking around barefoot? You’re still sick. Go back to bed quickly."
School belle Sun pouted, returned to the bedroom, and flopped onto the bed.
...Sigh, I’m so unhappy now!
