Chapter 34: Chapter 32 "Shouldn’t
Chapter Thirty-Two: What Shouldn’t Be
Yao Weishan’s expression changed, and he turned to run towards the door. Chen Nuo didn’t pursue but quietly watched Yao Weishan.
Yao Weishan almost reached the door and stretched out his hand to pull the doorknob when suddenly, his whole body stiffened!
He felt the air in his lungs being wildly sucked out, as if an invisible force compelled him to exhale!
His fingertips were barely half a centimeter from touching the doorknob.
But that half-centimeter was like an insurmountable chasm, utterly unreachable!
Every muscle in his body was rigid, as if his consciousness could no longer control any part of his body!
Chen Nuo slowly walked over, reached out to support Yao Weishan, and pulled him back into the living room, even sitting him down in a chair.
Then Chen Nuo patted his shoulder.
Yao Weishan suddenly felt that he could move his body again!
The lungs, which had been almost depleted of air, could now breathe again.
He gasped frantically, clutching his throat and savoring the sweetness of oxygen re-entering his lungs.
Then, he looked up in horror at the young man before him.
"What is this... what sorcery? A spell? Magic??"
Chen Nuo didn’t reply.
He also sat back down.
"I’m not sure whether it’s your bad luck or Old Sun’s good fortune. If I hadn’t come into this world... well, perhaps everything you plotted would have indeed been realized," Chen Nuo said. He picked up a bottle of liquor from the table, twisted off the cap, took a glass, poured a large measure, and pushed it towards Yao Weishan.
"Come, have a drink to steady your nerves."
Yao Weishan looked at Chen Nuo. Chen Nuo stared coldly at the glass.
Yao Weishan clenched his teeth and took a sip from the glass.
The spicy whiskey burned down his throat like a line of fire.
"Finish it," Chen Nuo said coldly.
Yao Weishan glanced at Chen Nuo, not understanding.
But under Chen Nuo’s cold stare, his heart tightened, and finally, he gritted his teeth and drained the large glass of whiskey.
It was easily three ounces.
Chen Nuo nodded. "Now, let’s talk about Old Sun."
"You... you’re here for Old Sun?" Yao Weishan was stupefied.
This person before him was mysterious and unpredictable, and that trick earlier was beyond comprehension!
Old Sun? Old Sun! That useless Old Sun! The one as insignificant as a roadside weed, whom I could trample at will?! How could there be any connection? How?!
"Actually, in my lifetime, I’ve seen my fair share of bad people," Chen Nuo said, looking at Yao Weishan with a calm tone. "But you... tonight, I’ve heard and seen a lot. Hmm, you’re not the worst among those I’ve encountered; you wouldn’t even rank near the top. But... you’re truly disgusting. To tell you the truth, quite nauseating.
"To be honest, I think you’re a rather clever and capable person. After more than ten years abroad, you’ve also built a career for yourself. I imagine your IQ and EQ are both quite high, and your methods are effective enough. Someone like you could make a name for themselves no matter where they go. You have abilities, real abilities. But... you really shouldn’t bully an honest man like Old Sun. You really shouldn’t."
Chen Nuo spoke leisurely, without a trace of anger or the slightest irritation, as if discussing someone else’s affairs with casual indifference.
"It shouldn’t be like this. The world shouldn’t be like this. What kind of person is Old Sun? He’s just an ordinary man, as ordinary as they come. Take a walk down the street, and you’ll find many like him—a dime a dozen. He has no exceptional talent, no remarkable skills, nor any grand ambition. People like him, they exist in this world like grass by the roadside. They don’t want to take up much space; they just hope to live their little lives, have their little families, their little worlds, peacefully and smoothly. Yes, just to live on is enough.
"People like Old Sun, they go through life without harming anyone, without competing for interests, without snatching benefits from others. Let’s put it this way: he might even be a bit cowardly, the truly timid sort. If someone bullies him a little, as long as it’s not too much, people like him will probably just bear it. Silently bear it.
"Aren’t they angry? Impossible! Of course, they’re angry. Who wouldn’t be after being bullied? When wronged, anyone would feel upset. But people like them often just endure. Why? Because they have to live! They have to keep on living! If their bicycle gets stolen, they don’t even dare to look for it in the black market. And what if they found it? What then? An ordinary person, earning just a few hundred a month—how can they fight against those types?
"Especially when they’re middle-aged, with elderly parents and young children. The old folks get sick, their bodies weaken, and medical care costs money. The wife manages the household budget for daily necessities; that needs money too. The children are growing up; they need money for education and their future. So, how can they fight? When faced with humiliation, they endure. Isn’t this how most people live? Making do, scraping by, just living. But...
"But you can’t drive people to their breaking point. I know, I understand; you don’t need to make excuses. This world is inherently one where the strong prey on the weak, where big fish eat little fish. But you have to leave a way out for people like Old Sun, don’t you? Would you really push such honest folk into a corner, drive them to their deaths? Can this society truly not allow people like Old Sun to live?
"Is what he’s trying to protect too much? It’s not. Just a steady, ordinary job. Just a small, unremarkable family. A wife who lives her life honestly. A daughter who grows up carefree and happy. Using his not-so-broad shoulders and his meager strength to bear the responsibility of being the man of the family. Just these small demands. Just this simple way of life. Is that too much? Is he in anyone’s way?
"Today, I heard everything you all said. How difficult is it for an honest person to live? For instance, regarding you and Yang Xiaoyi, did he really not notice something was wrong with the child back then? Even a complete fool wouldn’t be that oblivious. He’s an honest man; honest people often just pretend to be foolish. Making do, scraping by, just living. Longing for a simple family. Eighteen years, right? Yes, it’s been eighteen years. Old Sun married her and treated her well for eighteen years. Do you really think he knew nothing? He definitely knew. But what could he do? It’s the lot of an honest man: to endure. He’s not stupid; he’s feigning ignorance. What else can one do but pretend? To keep life going, one has to feign ignorance.
"Honest people always think: let bygones be bygones, just endure it, as long as the future can be good, as long as life can go on peacefully and smoothly. And those past matters? Swallow them! Swallow them down! With the blood, with the bitterness in their hearts, just swallow it. Swallow it, keep it down, hide it well, bury it deep. Then, year after year, with the daily grind, with the veneer of ordinary life, they wrap it up, contain it, and bit by bit, digest it.
"You know, the first time I went to Old Sun’s home and saw how he treated his wife... sigh. The moment she came in, he’d get her slippers. When she sat down, he’d rush to pour hot water, even carefully cooling it a bit, afraid the temperature wouldn’t be right. All that care, that pampering—what was it all for? Wasn’t it just for a stable life, for a loving marriage? Wasn’t it just for a future where life could proceed smoothly?
"It’s so hard for honest people. A life like grass, a constitution like an ant’s. I know, in the eyes of someone like you, they’re worthless. You could crush them with a stomp of your foot, condemn them to utter ruin. But... it shouldn’t be this way. It really shouldn’t. Honest people shouldn’t be treated like this. Truly, they shouldn’t!
"Because you want to deal with him, he has to be ruined by your schemes. Because you plot against him, he has to watch his wife get thrown in jail. Because you want to take his daughter, he has to watch the little life he painstakingly protected for eighteen years go up in smoke? That would drive an honest man to his death. Do you understand?
"People like him are inconspicuous. If you bully them a little, over something minor, they’ll bow their heads and take the beating just to survive. But that job, that little home—that’s his life! If you take that away, he can’t go on. Besides, he’s a good person. An honest and kind-hearted good person. Someone like that shouldn’t be pushed by someone like you to a point where they can’t live. This world shouldn’t be like this. A million people like you could die, and it wouldn’t be too many. But losing even one good person like Old Sun is one too many!
"There’s one thing I really want to say to people like you... What the hell, did an honest man dig up your ancestors’ graves in a past life or something?!"
Yao Weishan’s eyes twitched.
He took a deep breath. "Brother... we can talk. We can negotiate! Spare me, and I’ll give you money! One million? Two million? If that’s not enough, name your price! As long as I can afford it!"
Seeing Chen Nuo remain silent, Yao Weishan immediately continued, "I’ll stop! I’ll back off completely! I won’t fight for the child anymore! I won’t dare to bother Old Sun again! I’ll keep my distance... No, no, I’ll go back to M Country right away! I swear, for the rest of my life, I won’t trouble the Sun family again—is that okay?"
Chen Nuo laughed.
He sneered coldly, his eyes narrowed as he looked at Yao Weishan.
"I... don’t believe you!"
Chen Nuo stared into Yao Weishan’s eyes. "You... you’re a bad person! If I let you go, the moment you’re out that door, you’d call the police. And... bad people hold grudges. After suffering a loss, you’d harbor it, obsess over it, and bite back at the first chance.
"Once you leave this room, you’d try to find me, to deal with me. You’d devise more malicious plans, use greater force, mobilize more resources to get revenge on me, and on Old Sun. Although I’m not afraid of such things, Old Sun can’t handle them. His life is as fragile as a blade of grass, his constitution like an ant’s; he can’t withstand it."
"It’s useless." Chen Nuo shook his head and pointed at himself. "I don’t believe you because I know you’re a bad person... I understand too well how people like you think... because I used to be a bad person too."
"You... you want to kill me?"
Yao Weishan stared at Chen Nuo, aghast. "You want to kill me?!"
Chen Nuo watched him calmly.
"I... I can give you a lot of money, a huge amount!" Yao Weishan screamed. "How could you possibly kill me! Do you know who I am? Do you realize how big my business is, how vast my assets, how strong my influence is?! All for a Sun Shengli? Just for a Sun Shengli who earns a few hundred a month?!
"You want to kill me?! You can’t kill me! You mustn’t! I’m rich! I’m a magnate! I even have an M Country passport! Do you have any idea how serious the consequences will be if you kill me? Do you understand the kind of trouble you’ll be in?! All for a Sun Shengli?!"
Yao Weishan trembled. "Spare me! I’ll go back to M Country and never return, I swear! I really swear!" As he spoke, his eyes suddenly lit up. "I’ll... I’ll prove it to you!!"
Desperately, he scrambled to the floor, grabbing for the cell phone on the ground.
Chen Nuo did not stop him. He believed that a smart person like Yao Weishan wouldn’t call the police or ask for help in his presence.
Sure enough, Yao Weishan dialed a number.
"Manager Zhao, it’s me! Cancel the company’s inventory check immediately! Yes! Yes... we’re not doing it anymore! I said so! No more!! Notify the tax and finance departments! This is my decision, just carry it out! You don’t need to ask any more questions!"
Tossing the phone aside, Yao Weishan, eyes bloodshot and gasping for breath, stared at Chen Nuo. "See? I did it! I’ve spared Sun Shengli and his family! You can’t kill me now; you have no reason to kill me anymore!
"Let me go! I’ll never seek revenge against you, and I’ll never seek revenge against Sun Shengli! I’ll really go back to M Country. I’ll leave tomorrow!"
Chen Nuo quietly watched Yao Weishan’s hysterical state.
That terrified look, that almost absurd expression... In his mind, he simply couldn’t grasp the logic: how could anyone, for someone as insignificant as Sun Shengli, for a life as trivial as an ant’s, want to kill him? Was it worth it?! He was a magnate! A magnate who could cause a significant stir with just a stomp of his foot!
Chen Nuo quietly watched Yao Weishan, and then...
He snapped his fingers!
Yao Weishan suddenly shuddered and fell sideways to the ground.
He just felt a warm sensation slowly emerging at the back of his head, warm, and even a bit comfortable.
But his body became stiffer and weaker.
What he didn’t know was that with Chen Nuo’s snap, a blood vessel inside the back of his skull had burst!
Blood uncontrollably rushed out of the vessel, pouring forth...
Chen Nuo sat quietly in the distance, watching Yao Weishan convulse and struggle on the ground like a fish.
Saliva drooled from his mouth; his face contorted, his mouth twisting and eyes askew.
"You... why... would... kill me... I... have a lot... of money... money... money..."
More and more saliva dribbled uncontrollably from the corner of his mouth, and Yao Weishan could no longer speak a word.
Gradually, his eyes also closed.
Chen Nuo sat for a while longer, then stood up.
He said, "When you’re found, everyone will assume you died of a cerebral hemorrhage. You took a hot bath and then drank a large glass of strong liquor. Hmm, the cause of a cerebral hemorrhage can be logically deduced from that.
"Successful people are often under great stress and not in perfect health. It wouldn’t be too strange if you had a hidden condition like cerebral thrombosis or were prone to cerebral hemorrhages. Even a thorough examination wouldn’t find any problems. You’ll have convulsions, muscle rigidity, uncoordinated limbs, and even lose control of your bladder and bowels before death. Everything will fit the symptoms of a cerebral hemorrhage.
"Even an autopsy will show that the blood vessels in your brain burst on their own. Everything will seem very natural, very normal."
As he spoke, Chen Nuo bent down and whispered into Yao Weishan’s ear. "When you’re on the Naihe Bridge, drinking Meng Po’s soup, remember one thing," Chen Nuo smiled. "In your next life, don’t bully honest people."
Yao Weishan let out his last breath.
Chen Nuo turned, pulling the balcony door open with his gloved hand.
Stepping onto the balcony, he closed the door behind him; the handle inside automatically latched and then locked.
Chen Nuo’s body floated up lightly, landing on the edge of the balcony, and then he slid down the side of the building.
His body fell rapidly through the air, but the speed gradually decreased from its initial velocity.
About ten meters from the ground, his body felt as light as a feather.
After landing, Chen Nuo looked around to make sure no one saw him, put on the hood of his leather jacket, stuck his hands in his pockets, and walked around the back of the hotel, disappearing into a small alley...
Although I’ve been criticized, in terms of the writing, I maintain that I am very satisfied with these Chapters. "Web novel" doesn’t automatically mean "mindless gratification novel." Novels do need exciting parts, but that doesn’t mean the content should only be about thrills and nothing else. I was harshly criticized, but I still believe these Chapters are well-written—the best I could produce with my abilities. I won’t change them, and I have no regrets. I’m a writer, not a pornographer. Lastly, I ask for votes, all kinds of votes, and donations. I refuse to believe that all readers only enjoy mindless stories that are pure thrill from beginning to end.
