Chapter 41: Echoes of the Future

Chapter 41: Echoes of the Future

The late-night wind in Valencia had a sound — a kind of distant hush, like waves far away, or a city holding its breath. Tobi Oliveira stood on the small balcony outside his bedroom, hands on the railing, letting the air cool his face.

Inside, Leonor was already asleep. His mother had turned in early too, though she left a note on the kitchen table.

> "Meeting with the Puma rep tomorrow. We’ll go over your new boot deal. Sleep well, meu campeão."

— Mãe

Tobi folded the note and slid it into his drawer. He wasn’t thinking about boot deals tonight. He was thinking about time.

How fast it moved.

And how fast it could all disappear.

---

Sunday morning came quietly.

Coach Ramos had given them the day off after the Girona match — "Mental rest is part of the training," he’d said.

But Tobi didn’t rest.

He woke early again, made eggs and toast for himself, and jogged to the Valencia training ground an hour before anyone else was expected. He’d arranged with Paco to use one of the side fields. Just light drills, nothing too intense. Ball control, passing lanes, quick turns. He worked in silence, the only sound the rhythm of his touches and the wind brushing the empty bleachers.

His system stayed mostly silent, but every now and then it would offer soft, encouraging feedback.

After an hour, Paco arrived.

"You’re not going to give yourself a day off, huh?" the older midfielder said, tossing his bag aside.

Tobi shrugged. "Can’t rebuild standing still."

Paco chuckled. "Good. Let’s work on press escape routes. Girona gave you space. Big clubs won’t."

They drilled for another 45 minutes — close-quarters passing, shoulder checks, controlled spins under pressure.

By the end, Tobi was exhausted — but clearer.

He could feel his control returning. Not just over the ball. Over himself.

---

Later that afternoon, as he reviewed match footage in his room, he received a surprise system alert.

---

[Coach Assessment Module Unlocked]

> Due to sustained performance tracking and tactical interest, you have unlocked access to "Perspective Echoes."

> This feature allows you to see brief insights from others’ points of view during key moments.*

---

Tobi blinked. This was new.

The interface displayed three locked clips. One of them had Coach Ramos’s name beside it.

> Perspective Echo – Coach Ramos (Match: Girona)

Unlock cost: 1 Insight Point

Insight Points: 3 available

He tapped it.

---

[Visual Overlay – Activated]

Perspective: Coach Ramos, 72nd Minute, Girona vs. Valencia

The screen darkened slightly, then showed the sideline view. Tobi could hear Ramos muttering under his breath as the team struggled to hold possession.

"He’s calm... Good, don’t rush that. Nice... there’s that composure," Ramos whispered.

Tobi watched himself turn under pressure and release a pass to the flanks.

"Alright, kid. That’s the football brain I saw at Sporting. You’re earning it."

Clip ended.

---

Tobi leaned back, stunned.

The system was showing him echoes — shadows of how others saw him. Not just numbers. Not stats.

Respect.

Trust.

He wasn’t used to it. But he was ready for it now.

---

Monday morning, school dragged. His classmates were quieter now. Some respected him more. Some kept their distance. A few still mocked his "easy life," but Tobi didn’t bite.

He passed his Spanish grammar quiz — barely — and spent his lunch period helping Leonor study for a science test. She grumbled the whole time.

"I’d rather be practicing corners."

"You still don’t know what chlorophyll is," he said.

"Neither does Messi."

He snorted. "Maybe not, but he could probably spell it."

---

That evening, he met with his mother and the Puma rep at the club offices.

The man — slick, young, confident — laid out the deal: exclusive boot line, appearance bonuses, options for personalized gear if he stayed above a certain performance threshold.

"You’ve become a quiet star," the rep said. "We think you’re going to explode."

Tobi didn’t reply right away.

His mother spoke up. "We’ll take the base deal. No distractions for now."

The rep hesitated, then nodded. "Understood. When he’s ready."

When they walked out, Tobi nudged her. "Thanks."

Inês smiled. "That’s what agents are for."

---

Midweek training was sharp.

Ramos kept him with the starters for the second half of the session. He paired Tobi with Gabriel, their current starting striker, and the two began forming a rhythm.

Near the end of the session, Ramos pulled him aside again.

"We’ve got Sevilla next. I’m thinking of starting you. Not certain yet. But prepare like you will."

Tobi nodded once.

He didn’t let it show — but his heart jumped.

---

The day before the match, he checked the system one more time.

He tapped into the second echo clip — this one from Leonor.

> Perspective Echo – Leonor Oliveira (Backyard Training, 3 Days Ago)

"He’s not like before. He’s more careful. But he still sees everything. Like he’s playing chess."

Tobi smiled to himself.

His sister believed in him, always had.

But now she was seeing him with new eyes.

---

Sevilla away was no joke. One of the league’s toughest crowds. The stadium buzzed from warm-up to whistle.

Tobi was named in the starting lineup.

He took a deep breath as he stepped onto the pitch.

The game began at a breakneck pace. Sevilla pressed hard, but Tobi didn’t panic. He played short, moved quickly, kept the rhythm alive.

In the 38th minute, he picked off a loose pass near midfield. One glance forward, then a perfectly weighted ball to Gabriel, who buried it near post.

1–0. Assist: Oliveira.

The crowd jeered. But Ramos clapped.

Tobi didn’t celebrate much.

He just nodded.

The second half was chaos — Sevilla pressed relentlessly. Tobi got knocked down more than once. But he held his own.

When the final whistle blew — 1–1, after a late Sevilla equalizer — Ramos pulled him aside.

"That," he said, "was a senior-level performance."

---

Back in his room later that night, Tobi opened the system one last time before bed.

He lay back in bed, arms folded behind his head.

He wasn’t famous.

He wasn’t unstoppable.

But he was building something unshakable.

And that, to him, was better than a headline.
