Chapter 712: Chapter 38 Kieren’s Temptation
"Lord Solomon, I indeed know something about the Double Rest Sect," Kieren said respectfully.
"Is that so? Then tell me what god they worship, what their main doctrine is, and their relationship with that Lady named Ireya."
Kieren had dealt with Solomon many times and had grown accustomed to the Wing Clan Commander’s straightforward, no-nonsense style.
He organized his thoughts briefly and answered, "The Double Rest Sect worships a god named Saturday. Their main doctrine calls for everyone on the Continent, regardless of gender, age, or race, to unite and establish a Land God Kingdom together and implement the ’double rest.’
"What is ’double rest’?" Solomon furrowed his brow, interrupting the minstrel.
"It means that after every five days of work, there must be two days of rest."
"That seems rather lazy," Solomon said, frowning even more deeply. "Do the peasants also have to adhere to this? Aren’t they afraid of starving, or is it that their lords are particularly benevolent and willing to reduce their rent and labor services?"
"As far as I know, the farmers in Green Field are also practicing the double rest, but last autumn they harvested more crops than ever before, and the rent collected by the lord has increased."
"How is that possible?" Solomon disbelieved.
"Perhaps their land has been blessed by Saturday."
"As for Sir Irelia, she is the first noble in the western territories who believed in Saturday. To join the Double Rest Sect, she changed her family’s traditions that had lasted nearly a thousand years."
Kieren coughed slightly, "I have heard some rumors, possibly because she and Prophet Merlin were overly intimate—people have seen Prophet Merlin frequenting Sir Ireya’s bedroom late at night."
"A cult with ridiculous doctrines and a lecherous noblewoman immersed in pleasures—such a combination can’t even kill a dragon, let alone a young one," Solomon shook his head.
"Not to mention, the Lady named Ireya has even defeated the Wing Clan Warriors, won the championship at the martial arts tournament; and Lord Shajia has not returned even now. He’s probably already dead by her hand," Solomon conjectured.
Kieren broke into a cold sweat, realizing that the investigative squad had only been dispatched by Solomon a short while ago, yet this Wing Clan Commander seemed to have already guessed the truth.
Solomon looked up at Kieren, "What are you afraid of?"
"I, I just thought of Lord Shajia’s extraordinary status. I heard his father, Lord Sibulun, is the king of the Wing Tribe. If anything were to happen to him, then, Lord, you..."
"Don’t worry about me," Solomon said. "Sibulun’s son went to the western territories on his own, not sent by me to his death. Sibulun can’t punish me for that, and besides, he isn’t in Bratis right now."
After saying this, he noticed Kieren hesitating to speak and added, "If you want to ask something, go ahead. There are no outsiders here."
"Will Lord Sibulun also come to Bratis in the future?" Kieren asked cautiously.
Solomon nodded, "Yes, indeed. The continent where we live is much smaller than this one and lacks resources. Moreover, disasters strike frequently, especially in recent years, becoming more and more frequent.
"We have long contemplated leaving there, but not only is the environment on the continent harsh, the sea conditions are also very poor, often encountering severe hurricanes and storms.
"We have dispatched countless warriors and scouted many locations before discovering your continent; however, our ships are incapable of crossing that sea region."
"Don’t you also have wings?" Kieren asked.
"Even the Wing Tribe don’t all have the ability to fly for long durations, and it’s hard to find a place to land over the sea," Lord Solomon said, "That’s also why the expeditionary army is only about ten thousand strong.
"Lord Sibulun certainly wanted to personally lead the expeditionary army, but he is the leader of the Wing Tribe and needs to be with most of his people, so I’m leading the army this time.
"Once this war is over, I’ll gather all the skilled craftsmen on the Continent and build a massive ship that can withstand hurricanes, and bring over the rest of our people."
"But if that happens... Sibulun will be the Emperor of the new Empire." Kieren muttered softly.
Seeing the hesitation on the interpreter’s face, Solomon asked, "What did he just say?"
The Wing Tribe interpreter quickly repeated Kieren’s words.
Lord Solomon looked deeply at the minstrel, "This time I’ll let you off, but if I hear you say such things again, don’t blame me for being ruthless; I will kill you outright."
Kieren was so frightened that his legs went weak, and he sat down on the ground, his expression one of terror, unable to utter a word.
Solomon didn’t pay him any more attention and turned away, leaving the hall.
Afterward, Kieren staggered out of Solomon’s mansion, but by the time he reached the street, the fear in his eyes had vanished, replaced by a thoughtful expression.
He had deliberately misspoken earlier, just to observe Solomon’s reaction.
This action came with certain risks, but based on Kieren’s understanding of Solomon, he was ninety percent sure that Solomon would not kill him over it.
Moreover, this move clarified his own stance, that Kieren’s loyalty was with Solomon, not with the Wing Tribe.
Though these might seem similar at first glance, they actually made a significant difference; Solomon was only the commander of the expeditionary force, not the king of the Wing Tribe.
On the surface, Kieren’s words angered Solomon, yet in Solomon’s heart, it only solidified his trust in Kieren as one of his own.
The minstrel didn’t rise to Solomon’s confidant in a short time by mere luck.
Furthermore, Kieren also took this opportunity to confirm something else: that Solomon had no intention of betraying his own tribe, but he did harbor thoughts of replacing Sibulun.
It seems the Wing Tribe is not as unified as they appear, Kieren thought, foreseeing potential advantages to be exploited here in the future, but for now, his plan was to stick closely to Solomon, oh yes, and to the Double Rest Sect as well.
The minstrel planned to find some time later to visit Redio and share the intelligence he had gathered today, especially about Solomon asking about the Double Rest Sect.
However, Kieren himself felt that Solomon had no current plans to act against the Double Rest Sect, and might even be grateful to Sir Irelia and Li Yu for removing Shajia, the unstable element.
Why would the prophet of the Double Rest Sect feel this sense of crisis? Kieren thought for a while, couldn’t figure it out, decided not to dwell on it anymore, and resolved to buy himself a new carriage.
Though he already owned two, but well, who could blame him for indulging now that he had money? Humming a tune, the minstrel walked towards the market.
Almost at the same time, a strange figure with wings on its back quietly landed at the docks of Crab’s Corner.
