Chapter 701: Chapter 27 Ascension by Daylight
The crowd, after a moment of silence, erupted into an even louder cheer.
At the same time, countless voices converged, forming two words that were repeated over and over.
—Judgment! Judgment! Judgment!!!
Their voices grew louder and louder, as if to reach the heavens, causing Lord Gaven’s face to change dramatically.
Meanwhile, Quintus remained silent as ever.
"Our first criminal—Duolin City’s interrogator. According to our investigations, in the past half year, he has interrogated a total of two hundred and nineteen ’Blood Moon Association’ suspects.
"Over half of these people died during the interrogations, and of those who survived, less than twenty are alive today."
A fat man, about twice the size of an ordinary person, was pushed in front of Hirodod.
But before Hirodod could speak, the man had already knelt down with a plop, crying and begging, "It was Shapiro who forced me to do it, it was Shapiro who forced me. I am a disciple of the Silver Moon Goddess, how could I bear to harm other believers!
"I beg you, spare my life, please. I realize my wrongs now and am willing to serve you."
"You should not be pleading with me," Hirodod shook his head and said softly, "I am not your judge."
Having said that, he looked down at the crowd at his feet, scanned the surroundings, and then spoke, "As I promised before, I will return the right to judge him to you.
"You decide his fate. If you think he is innocent, then I will set him free right now. If you think he is utterly evil, you can ask me to execute him.
"So please use the power in your hands wisely."
No sooner had Hirodod finished speaking than someone in the crowd began to shout, "Execute him, execute him, avenge those who have died!"
"That’s right, kill him! kill him!!! My brother died at his hands!!!"
The number of people calling for the execution grew, and the fat interrogator turned a ghastly pale, his whole body trembling uncontrollably.
He seemed to know that escape was impossible today, but he did not want to sit and await death, so he stood up from the ground and turned to flee down the stone steps.
However, Ilkand at his side was quick to act. He drew the sword from his waist and decapitated the fat interrogator with one clean stroke.
The head flew a great distance before landing right by Hirodod’s feet.
Yet Hirodod didn’t even glance at it, and with a slight smile, he said, "The next criminal, oh no, should I say the next group of criminals, the remnants of the Raimondi family.
"After you killed Shapiro, they attempted to connect with the defense forces to arrest and execute all those involved in the rebellion. So, what do you think we should do with them?"
This time, the crowd’s response was much quieter. After all, the Raimondi family had ruled over Duolin City for a long time, and even though Family Head Shapiro was dead, his influence still lingered.
And among the forty or so criminals brought forward this time, there were women and children.
So, the crowd argued among themselves this time.
Hirodod was in no hurry, calmly waiting atop the stone steps. After about a quarter of an hour, the people below had barely come to a consensus.
They decided to kill all the men of the Raimondi family and send the women to brothels.
But soon someone objected, "We can’t leave any survivors, otherwise what if that guy comes to take revenge on us later."
"Right, they should all be killed!" another echoed, "When Shapiro captured and tortured us, none of these people stopped him, so they must all be guilty."
"So what is your final decision?" Hirodod asked.
"Kill them all, kill them all!!!
"Yes, no risks should be left alive," the calls from the crowd to execute all forty or so people grew louder.
"This is not justice at all, just a mob’s frenzy," Lord Gaven said, pale with fury.
And this time, Quintus did not retort. His face took on a somewhat vacant look, as though he had encountered some difficult problem.
In the time it took Gwen to speak, over forty heads had also rolled to the ground.
Blood even splattered onto Hirodod’s robe, making it appear even more vividly bright.
"The next criminal is a high-ranking individual," Hirodod said. "He is the acting City Lord of Rock Snow City, from the Figrola family, ’Winter’ Lord Gaven."
Hirodod presented him as if introducing a piece of merchandise, and as soon as he finished, someone pushed Gaven to ascend the stone steps.
Gaven did not resist, but after walking a few steps with his head down, he suddenly turned back and grabbed the sword from the warrior behind him.
He forcefully pulled it out and bellowed, "You rabble-rousers, you have no right to judge me!"
After he finished, he charged at Hirodod.
However, his injured leg slowed his movement, and the inflammation from the infection made him break into a cold sweat, rendering his feet unsteady.
Gaven ran a couple of steps, saw that a group of guards had already surrounded Hirodod, and knew that it was impossible for him to kill the High Priest of the Blood Moon Association.
So, before the surrounding warriors could converge on him, he leaped into the crowd below the stone steps.
Gaven swung the long sword in his hand, killing three and causing the surrounding civilians to scatter and flee. He locked onto a man who had cheered the loudest during the trial, intending to pursue him, but the next moment, he faltered.
An arrow struck him in the back!
But Gaven, with eyes blood-red, seemed to feel no pain at all as he once again swung his long sword, killing another person. Then, a second arrow arrived, hitting him in the lower back.
Then came a third arrow... In the end, Gaven was struck by six arrows before he reluctantly fell.
Hirodod frowned slightly. He could tell that Gaven was seeking death, not wanting to accept the so-called trial like the previous victims.
Yet with the situation as it was, not to shoot arrows and let Gaven continue to slaughter the believers at the foot of the steps was clearly not an option either.
Hirodod shook his head and ultimately accepted the outcome.
This was not quite what he had planned, but it was no major mishap—Gaven was dead in the end.
Hirodod turned his gaze to Quintus, who seemed disturbed by Gaven’s death and was now glaring back at Hirodod with rage.
But the expression in his eyes quickly shifted from anger to astonishment.
Hirodod actually had quite an appreciation for Quintus, because unlike the corrupt and degenerate High Priests of the Silver Moon Church, he was a man of genuine ability and also deeply devoted to his faith in Pisya.
Hirodod hoped to subdue Quintus and employ him for the use of the Blood Moon Association.
Just as he was contemplating this, Hirodod suddenly found himself feeling light at his feet and began drifting towards the sky.
The High Priest of the Blood Moon Association was stunned for about two seconds before realizing he had been kidnapped.
While everyone’s attention was drawn to Gaven’s bloody fight below the steps, a shadow had swooped down from above the temple behind Hirodod and lunged at him.
By the time the guards beside Hirodod realized what had happened, they saw their High Priest being snatched up by the figure and soaring into the sky.
"Bastard! Let go of High Priest Hirodod!"
"Don’t you dare leave!!"
The guards had their longbows drawn, aiming at the figure in the sky, but hesitant to release their arrows for fear of accidentally injuring Hirodod.
Therefore, they could only watch helplessly as the winged silhouette flew higher and higher.
While everyone was at a loss, uncertain where the figure intended to take Hirodod, who would have thought that the figure in the sky would suddenly yield, truly letting go of the arm that was grasping Hirodod.
