Chapter 656: Chapter 29 A Simple Man
The Lady returned to the castle and first spent some time dealing with the accumulated political affairs, and then she listened to the battle reports coming from the front lines.
The siege warfare around Lion Heart Castle was becoming increasingly tedious, with the Wing Tribe still besieging the city, but the disadvantages of lacking supplies were also gradually beginning to show.
After they used up the resin they brought, they couldn’t find suitable materials for ignition, and even collecting branches nearby meant facing the sneak attacks of the Imperial Soldiers lurking in the woods. They even had to start conserving their arrows.
Now, the Wing Tribe’s aerial attacks were mainly relying on dropping stones, but once those Imperial people took shelter underground, the rocks were of little use.
On the other hand, as the Royal Capital of the Empire, Lion Heart Castle had stocked a fair amount of food and weapons. Despite being besieged for so long, the supplies within the city were still fairly abundant.
Moreover, over time, reinforcements from various places had begun to arrive one after another. But out of fear of the Wing Tribe’s flying ability, they didn’t come too close, gathering outside White River City about two days’ journey from Lion Heart Castle.
The number of reinforcements had already reached fifty thousand, and the situation seemed to be developing in favor of the Red Lion Empire.
Miss Rabbit turned off the radio and picked up a letter that was next to her.
This letter was written to her by Quintus the High Priest. In it, Quintus revealed that their mole who had infiltrated the Blood Moon Association had completely gained Hirodod’s trust, and the time for rounding them up was drawing near.
Quintus the High Priest hoped that when the time came, the Lady could provide assistance with the arrest because the Blood Moon Association had greatly infiltrated the Silver Moon Church, and Quintus also worried that if he acted himself, it would tip them off.
Additionally, at the end of the letter, Quintus subtly reminded the Lady to restrain her sharpness a bit recently and try not to provoke Hels.
Although Miss Rabbit had finished reading the letter, her mind was no longer on it.
She hastily wrote a reply, agreeing to Quintus’ request, then she returned to her own bedroom, tried on several dresses, and selected the most satisfying gown.
After dinner, she had the maid heat some water for a bath, and it was only after she had bathed that she changed into that gown.
She first sat on the bed for a while, but no matter how she sat, it just didn’t feel right—then she tried crawling under the covers, only to find that it felt even stranger.
At last, after changing spots several times and dampening her fingertips in the basin to smooth the fluff behind her ears in front of the mirror, she finally settled down by the window.
She began to pick at her fingernails.
As the girl picked, she also noticed another thing, which was that when you keep staring at a watch, the minute and second hands seem to move slower than usual.
But fortunately, in the end, they reached the position Miss Rabbit had been eagerly anticipating.
And that dark figure appeared right in front of her, punctually.
The girl’s ears shot up in an instant.
"Mer, Merlin!"
"Ireya, have you encountered any problems while I was away?"
For some reason, even though Miss Rabbit had heard this question countless times, each time it still made her feel warm inside.
"No, no, things have been going quite smoothly recently."
"That’s good," Li Yu nodded, "You should rest, it’s getting late, I’m heading back to the Church’s territory."
"Wait, wait a moment..."
As the person was about to reach the door, the Lady quickly spoke again, "Stay and chat with me for a while before you leave, we haven’t seen each other for many days because you were on leave."
After finishing, she looked at the person across from her with an anticipatory gaze. The latter had already withdrawn their hand from where it rested on the door and walked back, pulling out a chair and sitting down across from her, "Sure, what would you like to talk about."
So far, events had unfolded almost exactly as the Lady had imagined.
She planned to start the conversation with the heavy snow outside and then gradually transition to the topic of feelings.
However, when the time came to speak, she felt that calling Li Yu over for such a trivial matter might have been making a mountain out of a molehill and worried it might lower her image in his eyes.
Caught in a state of fluctuating hope and fear, she was stuck and couldn’t find a new topic to save the situation at the moment.
But Li Yu didn’t rush her and just quietly waited on the sidelines; the more he did this, the more awkward the atmosphere became.
Miss Rabbit’s brain had completely crashed by this point, and she could only think of saying something quickly to break the deadly silence.
Yet, the moment she opened her mouth, words escaped her control, and Ireya blurted out subconsciously, "What kind of person do you really like?"
As soon as she said it, the girl felt doomed.
Because the question was too direct, and none of the lead-up she had planned was used at all.
However, she saw Li Yu seriously thinking for about half a minute before he answered, "Simple people."
"What are simple people?"
"Those whose minds aren’t so complicated. From what I’ve observed, such people generally live happier lives and can spread that happiness to those around them. Being with them is like having a little sun nearby.
"They care more about what to have for breakfast today than about the world’s changes and macroscopic propositions. They can be happy for half a day just because of a flower they see on their way out or a little dog."
"Although sometimes they might hurt others because of their carefreeness, you can’t blame them for it, because you know that’s just how they are."
The girl almost asked if he thought she was that kind of person, but thankfully, she regained some sense at the crucial moment.
Swallowing nervously, she asked, "So, do you have someone you fancy right now?"
After finishing, she pricked up her ears.
"Not at the moment," Li Yu said. "My work involves frequent travel."
"Then...then," Miss Rabbit stumbled for quite a while before she finally made up her mind, clenched her teeth, and said, "Have you considered looking for someone?"
After asking the question, she immediately lowered her head, but she could still feel his gaze on her.
Not until a soft "It won’t work" reached her ears did she abruptly look up again and ask in shock, "Why not?"
"Because as you know, I’m away two days out of every three, and on weekends, I might disappear for even longer,"
Li Yu explained, "Waiting is too painful an affair."
"But it can also be very sweet, because the joy you feel when you know the person you’re waiting for is about to appear is simply incomparable," blurted Ireya hastily.
"Or is it that you think what’s really keeping us apart is our identities, that I’m a mortal, and you’re a God?"
"I’m not a God," Li Yu shook his head. "I’ve told you when we first met, I’m just a Prophet."
"Then there is no difference between us," the girl said. "And I’m a Half-Beast, with three times the lifespan of a human. Even if only one-third of my life were spent with you by my side, that would be enough for me."
