Chapter 618: Chapter 50: Dwarf vs Ghost (Part 1)

Engulfed by the sudden bizarre Light Pillar, even General Jerome, who had fought countless battles and slain numerous enemies, felt panic-stricken at this moment.

He couldn’t even move his feet and just stood there dumbfounded, as if an invisible hand was choking his throat.

Then, Aragon tackled him to the ground beside him, shouting, "Protect the general!"

Only then did the other Dwarf Warriors come to their senses, all rushing over.

They raised their shields and drew their battle axes, incessantly hacking and howling at the beam, seemingly trying to scare off their opponent in this way.

However, no matter how fierce their actions were, the Light Pillar remained completely immobile.

At this time, a Dwarf Mage thought of something and excitedly said, "This, this must be... the summoning of a Heavenly God!

"Only the most valiant heroes are chosen, to go to the Divine Country filled with ale and flowers, General Jerome, this is Seter’s recognition of you!"

Jerome was still bewildered and responded instinctively, "But I still need to lead my troops to fight for the Kingdom, how can I go to the Divine Country now?"

"No worries, you can pray to Seter, asking to be summoned after your death."

However, before the magician had finished speaking, another wave of battle cries arose from outside the camp, and the outermost Dwarf Warriors seemed to have engaged with some enemy.

Jerome’s heart sank immediately; by now, his clarity had gradually returned, and he no longer believed the magician’s words that this was Seter’s summoning for him.

If Seter really needed more people, it made no sense to burn their supplies first.

Jerome’s first thought was that the imperial people had attacked.

After all, in these mountains, only the imperial people posed a slight threat to them, but soon, the message from the front confused him even more.

Because the Dwarf soldiers reported their enemy as a group of humanoid monsters they had never seen before, with iridescent eyes that also glowed.

Upon hearing this news, Jerome nearly thought he was still not awake and that all this was just a dream.

Otherwise, how could there be Fire Meteors, white Light Pillars, and suddenly appearing glowing monsters all in such a short span of time?

All of this was just too bizarre.

However, Jerome secretly pinched his own thigh, and the pain felt all too real. Moreover, the sounds of battle were getting closer to him.

Those creatures were ferocious.

The Dwarves on this side could only prepare for battle hastily; many were unable to don their armor in time, and they had to grab whatever weapons they could.

Moreover, like Jerome, most were no less frightened by these sudden apparitions; thus no sooner had they engaged in battle, they often could not withstand it long before starting to rout.

As the commander of this great army, Jerome naturally understood how dangerous this situation was. He wanted to reorganize the soldiers fighting separately in different places, to recover their combat effectiveness.

But such a task would not be easy even during the day, let alone at night, and Jerome couldn’t even find a messenger.

He sent Aragon to call the other officers. However, after making the rounds, Aragon saw only a few officers, but he did gather two or three hundred warriors, and he came back to report to Jerome.

"General, the enemy is about to strike. We should retreat. Prince Oli has not been attacked yet, so we can escort you to his location first. Once we regroup, we can then battle these monsters,"

Jerome looked around, but in the darkness, he couldn’t clearly see what was happening. However, the screams and wails that rose and fell were almost all coming from the Dwarves.

Furthermore, Jerome noticed that the pillars of light in the sky were still moving. Whenever they moved to a place, it wasn’t long before that area was under attack.

By this time, Jerome still didn’t know whose side these white pillars of light were on.

But even having realized this, he felt powerless, for although he could fight the enemy, he didn’t know how to defeat these unfamiliar pillars of light.

This left the Dwarf General quite disheartened.

Aragon noticed that Jerome’s mood seemed a bit abnormal now.

But he no longer had time to persuade further, because although they had pulled Jerome out of that suspicious pillar of light, they were still very close to it.

Constantly in danger, he signaled to two of his subordinates with a look. They supported Jerome from front and back, hoisting the Dwarf General onto his warhorse.

Afterward, Aragon led his men to escort Jerome toward the west side of the camp.

As he had said earlier, that area hadn’t yet been attacked by those monsters, relatively safe, and would give them time to reorganize the army.

Halfway there, Jerome finally regained some consciousness and spoke in a hoarse voice, "Also gather those savages. We can’t let only our warriors die. As allies, they too must fight those monsters."

Aragon nodded and sent a subordinate to inform the leaders of those savage tribes.

The rest continued to escort Jerome until they met Prince Oli.

Jerome didn’t particularly like the middle-aged man in front of him, always wearing a broad smile, because he knew well why the Dwarf King had sent Oli here.

It was simply because in these years his accomplishments had been too outstanding. Herry was a bit uneasy about him, so he sent his own brother to keep a watch over him.

This time, the Dwarf Kingdom had dispatched thirty thousand troops, but Jerome could only command about eighteen thousand, while the remaining twelve thousand principally followed Oli’s orders.

Jerome had previously been dissatisfied with this arrangement, but now he instead felt a slight sense of relief.

Because the enemy had launched attacks suddenly at night, along with various strange phenomena, Jerome’s side was caught off guard, suffering heavy losses and, more importantly, losing command; his forces now were in total disarray.

Jerome and Aragon had been gathering scattered soldiers along the way, but they had managed to rally fewer than two thousand men.

Conversely, although Oli’s side was also taken aback, with the time they gained, their troops were now nearly assembled.

Jerome nodded to Oli as a greeting, having no time for pleasantries before going straight to the point.

"We were attacked, and we’re not yet clear about the attackers, but judging from their speed of advancement, their numbers don’t seem very large. If we lead our troops back now, we can regain the initiative,"

Oli’s face was no longer smiling and looked rather stern, "Giant General, are you certain this isn’t a trap?"

"What do you mean?" Jerome was taken aback and then felt a tinge of anger, "At a time like this, are you still planning to continue internal strife?"

"It’s not internal strife," Oli shook his head, "mainly because night fighting is not our forte, and I think we should hold out as much as possible until daylight."
