Chapter 604: Chapter 36 A Brilliant Victory

Fighting a battle is partially about how your side performs, but mainly it relies on the cooperation of the opponent.

Those Dwarfs, for some reason, had a brain lapse and made a big show of lining up for battle, only to run away without fighting.

What’s more, they didn’t just run; they split up to run, as if fearing there were too many of them on one side, making it difficult for the Lady to kill them.

So, considerately, they divided their army into small troops of one to two hundred people, proving what it meant to gather as a hard bone, scatter as soft dumplings.

Restricted by their racial traits, the Dwarf Warriors were naturally short with equally short legs, making their retreat slow, how could they possibly outrun the Empire’s Cavalry?

Moreover, on the Lady’s side, all the warriors, having just received the terrible news of Marquis Kuren’s death, were burning with rage. With the promises of hefty rewards previously offered by Miss Rabbit, their morale had greatly boosted, and they spared no one in their attacks.

In addition, blessed by Saturday, they could pursue ferociously without worrying about ambushes.

Because the Three-eyed Divine Bird above their heads would detect the enemies in advance, then the voice of the Lady of the Double Rest Sect would emerge from that little black box, warning them.

Thus, this battle was utterly intense and satisfying, the Empire’s warriors, each energized as if possessed by Lu Bu, fiercely drove those Dwarfs to flee in panic, screaming for their parents.

From dawn to dusk, some had beheaded so many that their swords were notched. But the warriors did not mind the damage; first, they could exchange it for reward money, and second, they were chopping Dwarfs!

These fellows inherently burst Gold Coins!

Their Armor and weapons were crafted by Dwarf artisans. Although they were a bit small in size and not directly usable, they were good options to bring back for repairs by a blacksmith or to sell in the market.

The warriors from the western region had never fought in such a wealthy battle; slaughtering one Dwarf was more profitable than killing a hundred wild men.

Miss Rabbit didn’t need to motivate them any further; everyone was already seeing red.

Often, no sooner had they caught a Dwarf than several swords would strike together, and some, too far to reach in time, simply took to bow and arrow.

When the battle ended, the Lady sent people to tally the results, finding that they had killed over twelve hundred Dwarf Warriors, and about three to four hundred wild men.

Nearly half of the final kills were disputed.

The Lady, tired of the arguments, decided to distribute the rewards by family, and let the representatives of those families divide it among themselves.

Ultimately, Miss Rabbit’s first battle concluded with an unprecedented grand victory.

Once everyone calmed down, they praised the Lady for her adept command and divine strategy, but they also began to feel puzzled.

Mainly about the mountain Dwarfs, who were much fewer than expected. According to Kamzi and others, during previous encounters where they blocked the valley, the Dwarfs had deployed armies of at least ten thousand.

But now, the Lady had found only a little over a thousand, and even considering those that might have slipped through, the numbers couldn’t be that high.

So where did the rest of the Dwarfs go? And also the traitors to the western region, Hugo and Ilkand, were likewise not on the mountain.

While Miss Rabbit was still puzzled, she saw Tom bringing over a man with a grave expression.

Ireya glanced at the man, feeling him somewhat familiar, and asked, "Who is this?"

"He is the guard who oversees those savages, nicknamed Screamer."

"The guard for those savages, have they been up to anything?" the Lady arched an eyebrow.

"No, it’s this guy who’s been up to something," said Tom. "Just a while ago, while you were commanding the battle, I saw him sneak into the forest."

"This is a misunderstanding, Sir Irelia," Screamer defended. "I just wanted to find a place to relieve myself."

He looked utterly wronged.

"Is that so? Yet, when we found you, you had already reached White Stone Cliff, which we passed last night."

Tom then told the Lady, "If it weren’t for Miss Greta’s help, this guy really would have gotten away."

"Right, he had a few accomplices, all of whom were guards escorting those savages; they also tried to run away but were caught by the Black Hound guard," he added.

Miss Rabbit gasped, "Those guards... they were all Sir Morse’s men, right?"

"This is bad," Duren’s face drastically changed. "Our food supplies."

The heart of the Lady sank too; although it was her first time leading troops in battle, after seeing the dire state of the survivors in the valley, she clearly understood the importance of logistical support.

Due to the urgency of the rescue mission in the mountains, she couldn’t bring much baggage, and right before departure, Morse had assured her that he would deploy more rangers to keep the supply route clear and avoid past mishaps.

Therefore, the Lady had only brought supplies for ten days, and last night, Duren had just calculated that these supplies would only last them four days.

Fortunately, the second batch of food was already on its way and was supposed to arrive tomorrow according to the plan.

Miss Rabbit still held a glimmer of hope, "Could it be that only these guards were colluding with the enemy?"

"No, if Morse has already betrayed us, then the strange behavior of those Dwarfs on the mountain makes sense," Duren said. "They left just over a thousand men to guard the valley wounded, while the main force has probably already moved to our rear to cut off our retreat.

"The reason they didn’t kill these three thousand men, letting us easily rescue them, was also to add three thousand extra mouths to speed up our consumption of supplies," he explained.

"Is there a chance we can break out if we turn around now?" she asked.

Miss Rabbit, who had just been feeling proud not long ago, was now panicking again.

"It’s difficult," Duren gave his judgment. "Those Dwarfs must have been prepared for this; they don’t need to confront us head-on, just block the roads thoroughly, and they can naturally starve us out, just as they starved Marquis Kuren and the ten thousand men he brought.

"And we don’t have ten thousand troops in our hands; even if we add the three thousand we just rescued, we still have less than eight thousand troops, and from what I’ve seen, aside from the two thousand you brought, barely a thousand can be considered elite."

"That damned traitor Morse!" the Lady gritted her teeth, "With him sabotaging our efforts, no wonder Marquis Kuren’s supplies had issues."

Tom suggested, "Miss Greta says her mice can go out and send messages. The Dwarfs’ guard, no matter how tight, can’t stop them. You can write to Lord Hels and expose the crimes of Morse, asking him to send more reinforcements."

"I can write the letter, but the reinforcements probably won’t make it in time; we simply won’t last that long," Miss Rabbit said with a grave expression.
