Chapter 463: Chapter 81: The Perfect Lead Singer
After his talk with Li Yu that day, Che Haishen finalized the details of the collaboration with Zhang Yanlin, signed the contract, and then returned to school to immerse himself in music production.
Although Li Yu had provided Che Haishen with the lyrics and melody, Che Haishen still had a lot of work to do afterward.
Besides, strictly speaking, what Li Yu gave Che Haishen was just a lone main melody; Che Haishen still needed to determine the instruments, accompaniments, and harmonies during the arrangement.
In the Bratis Continent, Minstrels weren’t so particular. Kieren, for instance, generally just relied on his Layakin; thus, the amount of advice Li Yu could offer Che Haishen was limited, leaving more room for Che Haishen to play freely.
Fortunately, the arrangement for a pop song was not complex, and Che Haishen managed to finish this part of the work in about three days.
As for the lyrics, he simply lured a roommate with a meal at Little Fat Lamb to solve that matter.
Late, Che Haishen recorded a demo and sent it to Li Yu for a trial listen. After comparing it with the original, Li Yu provided some feedback for modifications, and Che Haishen made the necessary changes based on the feedback.
After about three rounds, Li Yu approved it.
Meanwhile, Che Haishen’s application to use the recording studio had been replied to — it was not approved.
However, that was not a problem; Che Haishen found a classmate who had been granted studio access and planned to tag along; besides, he had almost found all the musicians he needed.
The instruments used in "Oh, Please Accept This Rose of Love" were fairly rare, with no existing soft synths available, so they needed to be recorded live in the studio.
Besides that, they also needed a lead vocalist.
And Che Haishen already had his heart set on someone — Chen Jiahuan.
However, Che Haishen had yet to ask the latter, but now that the arrangement was complete, and the recording of the instrumental parts was nearly finished, he could no longer delay dealing with the vocalist.
Just thinking about speaking to Chen Jiahuan made Che Haishen nervous again.
In a lecture hall during his moral education class, he was distracted throughout, stealing glances every half minute at a certain spot in the second row.
And there were quite a few other boys doing the same.
Clearly, the figure seated there was more captivating than the lecturer on the stage.
Che Haishen calculated how to start the conversation while randomly scribbling in his notebook; at times, he even jotted down some lyrics from "Oh, Please Accept This Rose of Love" but quickly crossed them out like a thief.
He waited in a daze until the class ended, and was suddenly jolted awake by the bell.
Immediately afterward, his heart rate increased again, and his throat became dry.
The teacher on the podium dragged on the class for about five minutes, assigned some homework, and then left with her books.
Other students also started to leave the classroom one after another.
Che Haishen saw the figure in the second row packing up her books and chatting and laughing with another girl sitting next to her.
Che Haishen knew he couldn’t wait any longer, as it seemed that the two were also about to leave.
However, there were still quite a few people in the classroom, but Che Haishen could not care less at this point; he gritted his teeth, stood up from his seat, and began walking towards the person in front, his steps a bit stiff.
But he had only taken a few steps when another figure blocked his path.
"Che Haishen, what have you been up to these past few days? I’ve hardly seen you around."
"Ah, I picked up a gig outside, busy with arranging."
Che Haishen recognized the person in front of him as Ying Man, a high school classmate. It was quite the coincidence that they ended up at the same university.
At the beginning of their freshman year since they didn’t know anyone, they often ate meals together, traveled to and from school together, and were even mistaken for a couple by their roommates.
Che Haishen had deliberately kept some distance from Ying Man since then, and as both of them had made new friends, they stopped hanging out on a daily basis.
But Ying Man still asked Che Haishen out to play or grab a meal every now and then.
"What song, do you have a demo yet? Let me hear it." Ying Man grew interested.
"Well, I’ll send it to you when I get back to my dorm," Che Haishen hurried to find Chen Jiahuan, as the latter had already stood up, preparing to leave.
Upon hearing this, Ying Man retorted, "Why, don’t you have it on your phone?"
"No, I have something else to deal with right now," Che Haishen said impatiently.
"What’s up?" Ying Man followed Che Haishen’s gaze, looked back, and saw Chen Jiahuan, her eyes widening.
"Really? Do you know how many people in our school are chasing her? Plus, there’s a rumor that a rich second generation has recently gotten close to her. You don’t stand a chance, dude."
"Don’t talk nonsense, I’m not chasing her." Che Haishen’s expression changed slightly as he hurriedly defended, "I just want to ask her to sing."
"Haha, like I would believe that."
"It’s true," Che Haishen said, "wasn’t Chen Jiahuan the second top vocal music student in terms of GPA last semester? Plus, teachers have praised her range and timbre."
"Do you know who was first in the grade then?"
"Is it you?" Che Haishen was stunned.
"No, I just don’t care about boosting my GPA, but the teacher has also said that my voice is quite unique," Ying Man said.
"That’s what teachers say to those who lack fundamentals."
Che Haishen saw that Chen Jiahuan was nearly at the classroom door, growing more anxious, "Move, we’ll talk about your thing later."
"Tsk tsk, good advice doesn’t work on the damn obstinate. Remember to find me for a barbecue tonight if you get rejected. I’ll drink a couple with you to comfort your wounded little heart."
As Ying Man spoke, she took a half step back.
Che Haishen couldn’t bother to say anything else and quickly ran out of the classroom.
After a while, Che Haishen walked back in from outside, his gaze dull and his eyes lifeless, looking like he hadn’t woken up.
Ying Man glanced at her phone, "Four minutes, not bad, your survival time has already surpassed half of your competitors. Where do you plan to go for a barbecue tonight?"
"She agreed."
"Eh, what?"
"She agreed," Che Haishen muttered.
Ying Man inhaled sharply, "Chen Jiahuan agreed to go out with you?!"
"Of course not, she agreed to listen to my demo first, and if it’s okay, she might help me record it."
"Ha."
"I never expected Chen Jiahuan to be nothing like the rumors, surprisingly easy to talk to," Che Haishen finally regained some composure, excitedly saying, "With her joining, our song is set for success, it’d be hard not to."
"This is probably what people mean by ’lick-dog’, hurrying to deliver a song with such a lowly attitude," Ying Man shivered, "Ugh, keep away from me, that’s disgusting."
"Say whatever you want, I’ve found the most suitable lead singer anyway," Che Haishen said, "So you might as well keep the barbecue to yourself."
"No worries, it’s still early days. You’ll get your chance eventually."
