Chapter 431: Chapter 49 Where There Are Pitfalls
Zhang Yanlin left home half an hour early the next morning, only to underestimate the morning rush hour traffic and got stuck halfway there.
Fortunately, she still managed to arrive at the Cultural Industrial Park just before 9 am. After parking her car, she walked to the office building and noticed that all three new employees had already arrived.
Ma Yuhan and Hao Xiaoxiao were standing next to the small flower bed on the right side of the gate, while Zhang Hai was squatting on the stone steps in front of the door, munching on a pancake.
Seeing Zhang Yanlin, he immediately stood up and said familiarly, "Sister Zhang, good morning!"
"Morning." Zhang Yanlin asked, "When did you get here?"
Zhang Hai was taken aback, "I just arrived, wasn’t the notice to start work at nine? I shouldn’t be late."
"Of course." Zhang Yanlin then turned to Ma Yuhan and Hao Xiaoxiao, "And you two?"
Upon hearing this, Ma Yuhan’s heart tightened. The HR at her previous company was an older lady, supposedly the boss’s aunt, who had been quite enthusiastic during the hiring process and even offered to help her find a place to live when she heard that she didn’t have a place to stay.
Ma Yuhan was deeply moved at that time; she had just graduated from college and didn’t have much social experience. She thought the company was good, had a human touch, and was even willing to accept a lower salary.
But as soon as she joined the company, the lady turned against her, scolding her on the first day for being inappropriately dressed and from time to time, picking at her for other reasons.
Ma Yuhan heard from other colleagues that she did this to all new hires to establish her authority among the newbies.
Ma Yuhan wanted to resign, but she had already rented a house, just one street away from the company; she had turned down several other job offers, and it would take time to find another job.
Ma Yuhan needed money for next month’s rent, so she had no choice but to make do and work at that small company for nearly a year.
Hearing Zhang Yanlin’s question, Ma Yuhan almost thought the nightmare was about to repeat itself.
It seemed that this HR manager was probably trying to comment on their late arrival, hinting at a lack of enthusiasm for their work.
However, it was the first day at her new company, and Ma Yuhan indeed wanted to make a good impression on the leadership, so she had arrived half an hour early.
Hao Xiaoxiao arrived around a quarter of an hour early as well, and Zhang Hai was the last to come, arriving just two minutes ago, but he wasn’t late either.
At that moment, a number of thoughts flashed through Ma Yuhan’s mind. After waiting for Hao Xiaoxiao to answer, she hesitated and then said, "I got here around eight forty."
Ma Yuhan purposefully understated by ten minutes, firstly to make sure she wouldn’t be faulted for her attitude towards work, and secondly, she didn’t want to appear too crafty and fall out of favor with her colleagues.
But what she didn’t expect was that after she finished speaking, Zhang Yanlin continued to stare at her.
"That’s too early."
"Sorry, I’ll come even earlier next time...huh?" Ma Yuhan apologized subconsciously, only realizing halfway through that what Zhang Yanlin just said seemed to mean it was too early.
"The same goes for all of you. The boss doesn’t advocate coming in early but try not to be late either. Arriving between nine and nine fifteen is considered on time," Zhang Yanlin said while opening the door for the three of them.
"Wow, the boss is so generous! You can tell he’s destined for big things. I, Zhang Hai, have definitely not followed the wrong person," Zhang Hai exclaimed, giving a thumbs up.
Yet Ma Yuhan still found it hard to believe, although Zhang Yanlin had repeatedly emphasized during recruitment that the company’s benefits and compensation were excellent and would strictly adhere to labor law to protect the interests of employees.
Working hours from nine to five, weekends off, and compensatory time off for overtime, but Ma Yuhan was no longer the inexperienced fresh graduate she once was.
Bosses don’t hire people for charity; they aim to extract as much value from their employees as possible.
The more Zhang Yanlin said this, the more Ma Yuhan suspected there was some deeper meaning behind it, possibly some kind of hidden entry test.
After all, they had initially agreed to hire only one person, but now they had taken on three at once, and who knows, they might have to eliminate two later on.
However, Ma Yuhan didn’t say anything, just nodded and followed Zhang Yanlin into the office building.
Zhang Yanlin arranged workstations for the three of them and distributed office supplies and company regulations.
Then he took out three contracts, "Take a look, and if there are no problems, you can sign. After that, we’ll be colleagues."
Ma Yuhan took the contract and carefully read it line by line, while Zhang Hai on the other side only flipped through a couple of pages before eagerly grabbing a pen to sign his name.
"Don’t you want to take a closer look?" Zhang Yanlin reminded, "If you have any questions, you can ask me."
"No need, I’m very good at judging people, I trust the boss definitely wouldn’t cheat me," Zhang Hai said confidently, "Besides, there are too many words in here, it’s tiring to read."
Ma Yuhan looked at Zhang Hai with a bit of sympathy, thinking to himself how clueless this guy was, it appeared he hadn’t been toughened up by society enough yet.
The one thing employment contracts in companies are never short of is traps, and they’re often one trap after another. Without reading them carefully in advance, you might end up working for the boss for nothing all year long, and in worse cases, even risk ending the up behind bars.
However, Ma Yuhan read the labor contract in his hand three times and, to his surprise, did not find any major pitfalls, and there were only a few questionable spots, just two or three.
Moreover, other companies’ labor contracts also stipulated the same things, it was just so that the company would have more say in the event of any disputes in the future.
Feeling that he hadn’t missed anything, Ma Yuhan also picked up a pen and signed his name.
Hao Xiaoxiao had already signed the contract a step ahead and handed it to Zhang Yanlin, then asked, "When will the boss probably come to the company?"
"Do you need him for something?"
"Uh... I want to thank him for giving me this opportunity despite past issues, and also for what happened yesterday."
"He’s on a business trip; he probably won’t be back today." Zhang Yanlin collected the contracts.
"Then could you pass on my message to him? I’ll work hard and won’t cause him any more trouble."
"It’s probably better to say your thanks in person."
"Hmm."
At this moment, Zhang Hai butted in, "A business trip? Where did the boss go?"
"G City," Zhang Yanlin didn’t hide it.
"G City? Oh, I get it! He must be going to see that Gu Qian, that woman we did a background check on before, but she looks terribly ill, like she doesn’t have long to live."
"Yes, she’s our client."
Seeing that Zhang Yanlin seemed more approachable and no longer as tense as before, Ma Yuhan also joined the conversation, curious.
"But aren’t we a cultural promotion company? Does Miss Gu Qian want us to write articles to fundraise for her, or... make something that will leave memories for her parents?"
"No, what we provide her with is a different service, and you will soon know the specifics once you have worked here for a while."
