Chapter 404: Chapter 22: Are You Regretting It Again?
The nearby guards’ faces changed drastically when they saw this scene.
The mechanism was ingeniously designed and viciously lethal, the arrowheads looked green, clearly coated with some sort of poison, ensuring the target’s demise even if vital points were missed.
Moreover, their previous inspections had failed to detect any abnormalities, and had these two girls not been so alert, Lady Ireya might well have been in grave danger by now.
At this thought, many felt their backs drenched with cold sweat.
Sir Alfred’s complexion wasn’t much better, but he still maintained a knight’s poise as he turned to Greta, "We owe you a debt of gratitude this time, the Arias family does."
"I was merely carrying out the task Prophet Merlin assigned to me; if you want to thank someone, thank the Double Rest Sect."
"Of course, we will show our gratitude towards the Double Rest Sect as well, but your contribution will not be forgotten by the Arias family. Miss Ireya will prepare a token of thanks for you later."
Greta snorted indifferently.
Ruby thought the girl controlling the rats was quite impressive when, after only a few moments, she couldn’t resist adding, "Then ask her to write off some of my debt."
"That’s not something I can decide," the old knight said, "but I will suggest it to Lady Ireya."
After saying this, he turned to Ruby, "As for you..."
Ruby knew that despite her caution, her previous actions had made Sir Alfred suspicious of her identity, especially since she was now with Greta...
Thinking about how to fabricate a lie to get through the incident, she was surprised when Greta spoke up first, "I found her and asked for her help with the investigation."
Sir Alfred furrowed his brow upon hearing this, "If you were suspicious of the Welch family, why didn’t you inform me directly? As someone dispatched by Prophet, Teacup Castle would naturally cooperate with your investigation."
"I was afraid of startling the enemy," said Greta simply.
The old knight glanced at Ruby again but ultimately accepted Greta’s explanation and said to the little maid, "You did well this time, and Lady Ireya will reward you."
"Thank you for your praise, Sir Alfred," Ruby replied respectfully.
The old knight nodded, "I will report the incident with the statue to Lady Ireya immediately. You two can accompany me, to serve as witnesses."
Ruby and Greta followed Sir Alfred to the second-floor banquet hall.
The banquet had already started; the guests were indulging in the feast amidst the sound of harps and laughter, making the hall lively.
Sir Alfred asked Greta and Ruby to wait by the door while he went in first.
Once the old knight had left, Ruby spoke up again in a soft voice, "Thank you."
"Don’t mention it, but I don’t quite understand. You deduced all those things, so why did you insist earlier that I take all the credit?" Greta inquired.
"I didn’t want to attract too much attention."
"Is there any danger?" Greta suddenly became vigilant again.
"You’re thinking too much. I just hope to continue staying by Miss Ireya’s side."
"When you say staying, do you mean staying undercover?"
"I bear no ill will towards Miss Ireya."
"But you don’t seem to be treating her like a master either."
"You have your job, and I have mine. The difference is, your job is done and mine is not," Ruby said. After that, she furrowed her brows again.
"What? Having second thoughts?"
"No, I just thought of something. Why would the Welch Family want to assassinate Miss Irelia, and do it in front of so many people, no less? Whether they succeed or fail, the Welch Family is doomed either way."
"Don’t know, don’t care. Maybe Hirodod got hold of some leverage over them, like kidnapping the Family Head Pepp’s son."
"Nobles usually prioritize their family above all. Pepp’s actions wouldn’t just fail to save his son but would doom his entire family. He, as the Family Head, wouldn’t fail to understand this logic."
"That’s why he’s been so agitated these past few days, only making up his mind at the last moment."
"That explanation feels a bit... forced," Ruby murmured.
Greta sighed, "This is why I don’t like dealing with humans, especially the clever ones. You always think too much."
"You saw that statue, and you also found the mechanism and the Poison Arrow inside it. It was brought here by the Welch Family. Plus, it’s obvious that the Family Head Pepp has something to hide... Don’t all these facts put together make it clear?"
"Don’t underestimate Hirodod."
"What did you say?"
"Those who underestimated Hirodod in the past are all dead now. Some say he’s a madman, but even if he is mad, he’s a madman with very logical reasoning. It’s never too cautious to be on guard against him, hmm..."
Just as Ruby was speaking, Alfred walked back over, prompting her to immediately shut her mouth.
The old knight approached them, "Lady Irelia has asked me to thank you for your assistance. However, the banquet is still in progress, and she plans to deal with this matter after it concludes.
"I have already assigned additional personnel to watch over the remaining members of the Welch Family, ensuring they cannot get close to Miss Irelia. By the way, Miss Irelia has also invited you to dine."
"No, I’m not interested in dealing with humans, especially nobles," Greta said with a cold laugh.
"Then I won’t go in either," Ruby said.
Hearing this, Alfred did not insist. Their identities were indeed different from those inside, and joining them wouldn’t likely be comfortable.
"Then I’ll have the kitchen prepare two separate meals for you," the old knight said. "You can eat upstairs."
While they were talking, a round of applause suddenly erupted from inside the hall.
Ruby’s gaze passed Alfred, looking inside to see a nobleman approaching Irelia, taking a knee before her.
"Beautiful Sir Irelia, I wish to perform a magic trick for you."
Though Miss Rabbit’s face still carried a polite smile, her eyes clearly showed impatience as she twitched her ears twice, "Let’s eat first, Sir Hernan. The magic trick can wait..."
Before the Lady could finish, Hernan on the ground had already pulled out a bouquet of roses from his sleeve.
And those roses were made of gold, intricately crafted as to appear lifelike. Were it not for the sheen of gold on their surface, they would have been indistinguishable from ordinary roses.
The Lady’s breathing suddenly became hurried.
