Chapter 360: Chapter 118: The Lucky One
The housekeeper’s words startled everyone present.
"Father thinks there’s a traitor in the family?" Harman asked, "Why?"
"Isn’t it obvious? The Black Dragon attacked all the major family heads, and to ensure the success of the attacks, it had to precisely master every person’s travel trajectory."
"But according to Sir Ireya’s later statement, wasn’t that Black Dragon in cahoots with David?" Rafael also said, "It was David who leaked their movements to that Birdman and the Black Dragon."
"So where did David get the information from?" the housekeeper countered.
Rafael was at a loss for words.
Ilkand snorted, "What’s so surprising about that? Polly gave birth to a son for Father, and he was overjoyed. He announced three days in advance that he would hold a celebration in the city; this wasn’t a secret at all.
"Everyone in Black Stone City knew. David just had to ask any random person. To claim there’s a traitor in the family based on this alone is simply too arbitrary."
"Indeed," the housekeeper didn’t argue this time, "but then something else happened. An herbalist who was treating Lord Diodosi was found secretly possessing a small vial of poison.
"The poison wasn’t very potent, but it could prevent wounds from healing. Clearly, someone didn’t want Lord Diodosi to live."
"There was such a thing?" Ilkand was also taken aback, "Where is that herbalist now?"
"Dead," the housekeeper said expressionlessly, "Do any of you have anything to say about this?"
"What do you mean, do we have anything to say? Are you implying that we’re involved in this?" Harman raised his voice, "That’s absurd, we are his sons, his blood runs through our veins, how could we do anything to harm him."
"Is that so?" the housekeeper was noncommittal and turned to Li Yu, "Prophet Merlin, I wonder if you could perform a miracle and record our conversation?"
"I can."
Diodosi was so generous, offering soap pod tree seeds and Duty-free Trade Orders; Li Yu was definitely willing to help him out. Pulling out his cellphone, he opened the recording function, and then said to Galin, "Ready, you may begin."
The housekeeper thanked Li Yu again and then looked at Harman.
The latter felt an inexplicable panic in his heart, especially seeing Li Yu perform a miracle and record his voice, which made his eyelids twitch even faster.
"What exactly do you want to do?"
"Nothing much, just a few questions," the housekeeper said, "Two and a half months ago, when you were fooling around with a girl named Mei Ji in the brothel, did you say that you would soon become the head of the Immanuel Family?"
Before the housekeeper could finish speaking, everyone’s gaze had already converged on Harman’s face.
Harman’s face was very unpleasant. He instinctively wanted to deny it, but remembering Li Yu on the other side, he swallowed the words that came to his mouth.
He stood there, mouth agape, unable to utter a word for a long time.
And he didn’t need to say anything else because seeing his reaction, the others already knew the housekeeper was telling the truth.
"At that time, Lord Diodosi’s condition had improved. What kind of judgment led you to such a conclusion?" Galin continued.
"I... I was just sweet-talking that silly girl to get her to work harder," Harman said, "How can words spoken in bed be taken seriously?"
"Then why did you repeat the same words to your good friend Geoffrey while hunting two days later? What you said that day was..."
"Enough!" Harman’s face turned red, and he stood up abruptly from his seat, "You’re just a housekeeper; you have no right to interrogate us three brothers."
"I beg to differ," said Ilkand, "This time I support Miss Galin. It concerns Father’s safety; you should let her finish, brother."
Harman’s face turned even more unsightly, "Listen, I did say some stupid things during that time, but it has nothing to do with that herbalist. I didn’t bribe him, and I never thought about hurting Father."
After speaking, Harman looked at the housekeeper, "You’re spying on me?"
"No offense intended, but your father asked me to find out who was plotting against him."
"That’s disgusting," said Harman, "I’m leaving this place, tell your spies to keep away from me." Having said that, he left the banquet hall without looking back.
Watching Harman’s retreating back, Rafael hesitated, "Are we... just going to let him go?"
"Otherwise, do you plan to stop him?" Ilkand said, "He is the eldest son; with Father not here, no one has the authority to command him."
"But he’s not..." Rafael started to say but stopped when he realized the housekeeper had already turned her gaze toward him.
"Lord Rafael, I hear you’re on good terms with Lord David," Galin got straight to the point.
Rafael didn’t deny it, "At that time, he was still the heir to the Figrola family. Father taught us to cultivate good relations with those in real power, so I indeed spent a lot of effort befriending him. However, I didn’t know he was associated with the Black Dragon."
"But according to my investigation, the value of the gifts you sent him totals over thirty thousand gold lions, which is a bit beyond... the scope of simply cultivating a relationship. May I ask, what did you get from him for spending so much money?"
Upon hearing this, Rafael was silent.
"You’re also a member of the Immanuel family. Presumably, you wouldn’t do a bad deal."
Rafael remained silent, just pulling off the napkin from his shoulder and throwing it aside before he, too, stood up and walked towards the exit.
Seeing the other two had left, Ilkand, the only one remaining, raised his eyebrows and looked at the housekeeper with a smirk, "So is it my turn now?"
However, Galin’s response caught him off-guard.
"No, you’re different from them. You can be trusted. In fact, Lord Diodosi wants to see you, alone." The housekeeper stretched out her hand to summon another maid.
"Take Lord Ilkand upstairs."
Ilkand was both shocked and delighted by the news, not expecting happiness to come so suddenly.
And the fact that his father had dismissed Harman and Rafael but left him alone implied something that quickened Ilkand’s heartbeat.
Looking at the housekeeper again, he suddenly found her much more agreeable.
Ilkand even apologized proactively, "I’m sorry, I was too rude before. I shouldn’t have questioned your loyalty to my father."
But the housekeeper’s expression remained unchanged, she simply said, "It’s alright, go on now."
