Chapter 345: Chapter 103 A Frantic Battle

The assailants on this side clearly felt the astonishing aura of the tall man, so much so that no one came forward for a long time.

Until a voice rang out, "Leave him to me."

Then the owner of the voice stepped out from the crowd.

The tall man squinted his eyes, he had found the voice somewhat familiar when he first heard it, and as the face of the newcomer became clear, his surprise only intensified.

"Golden Eyes, it’s you. Have you betrayed the lord?"

"I prefer to call it breaking free from control, regaining my freedom," declared Golden Eyes unabashedly.

"You know the fate of traitors."

"I can hardly wait to see you kneeling on the ground in three days, crying and begging for the lord’s forgiveness. Actually, that won’t happen because I’ll take your life tonight, consider it my mercy," the tall man said.

"You talk as if you won the duel a year ago," Golden Eyes sneered.

"That was a year ago, and besides, I only lost to you by half a move," the tall man spoke indifferently. "Now, I am a completely different person from who I was a year ago. Come on, let’s see what progress you have made this year."

"As you wish," Golden Eyes also drew his sword, and spoke formally, "Butcher, today it’s just you and me, one on one, no calling for help."

"Exactly what I desire," said the Butcher.

Although the battle between two top fighters was quite exciting, Hirodod was not in the mood to enjoy it. As soon as the road was cleared, he ordered the coachman to continue driving out of the city at the earliest opportunity.

Seeing this, Tom quickly led his men in pursuit, but before leaving, he pulled over another Lizardman Warrior, pointing at the tall man.

"You stay here. Later, use your Hand Crossbow to harass that big guy, don’t listen to Golden Eyes. He’s lost his thumb, certainly can’t beat the other guy," he said.

Then he fished out two bags of Gold Coins from beneath the saddle and tossed them to a man with a birthmark on his chin, the same one who had stabbed the Black-armored soldier’s calf with a spear earlier.

"I’ll double your mercenary fee, help me take care of these guys," Tom added while he nodded toward the group of Black-armored soldiers behind the Butcher.

The man with the birthmark on his chin caught the flying pouches, weighed them for a moment, and a satisfied smile spread across his face.

These bags of Gold Coins were substantial, at least fifty in each. Two bags meant one hundred Gold Coins.

Adding to the hundred he had already received, the evening’s work totaled a full two hundred Gold Coins. Divided amongst the men, it was nearly seven Gold Lions per head.

It was definitely a substantial commission; of course, the opponents were indeed formidable, which also indirectly indicated the person inside the carriage was no ordinary figure.

Under normal circumstances, most mercenaries would be reluctant to take on such a job for a simple reason: they feared trouble.

But tonight was different. Firstly, Tom’s offer was high enough to be hard to refuse, and secondly, Duolin City was already in chaos, nothing that happened would be surprising.

It wouldn’t be so easy to hold anyone accountable afterward, so when Tom returned to the One-eyed Giant Tavern and laid out the commission, quite a few mercenaries were tempted right away.

Tom almost certainly mustered another armed force in record time.

On the other side, he was unaware that Hirodod planned to abandon the city before Matina’s forces arrived. He simply monitored the town through the Three-eyed Divine Bird floating in the sky above, keeping an eye on the movements within the city.

He quickly noticed the unusual activities of the religious patrol amidst the robbery and arson.

Tom had crossed swords with these people before and recognized their attire at a glance; he knew they obeyed Hirodod and immediately made a series of arrangements accordingly.

This included infiltrating a team of mercenaries into the ranks of the new army and later scattering spikes along Hirodod’s route.

It was a step-by-step delay for Hirodod, eliminating the enemy’s living forces.

Now, only seven people remained by Hirodod’s side, while Tom had six capable Black Hound Warriors, plus himself, which also made seven.

Although the numbers were equal, Hirodod’s side clearly had greater fighting power. However, the people of the Double Rest Sect, intent on rescuing the little maid, still pursued relentlessly behind them.

The moment was nearing when both sides would arrive in front of the city gates.

A Black Armored Cavalryman took the initiative to find the Deputy Commander Cui Si with a letter personally written by Hirodod.

If he could find Cui Si, he would not only be able to have the city gates opened but also order Cui Si to command his troops to block the pursuers behind them.

Just as the Black Armored Cavalryman had dashed out not far, a puff of white smoke suddenly rose before him. The smoke was strangely not from any flames, but from two peculiar little iron cans.

Moreover, the white smoke spread swiftly; within a few breaths, the Black Armored Cavalryman could see nothing and began to cough violently.

His horse, too, suffered, becoming dizzy and frightened, refusing to move forward any longer.

Tom’s final contingency plan had finally taken effect, as he had arranged for a Black Hound Warrior to reach the city gates ahead of time with the Double Rest Sect’s homemade smoke bombs.

The original plan was to create chaos during the escape if they were unable to leave the city.

Unexpectedly, it now came into use sooner. Seeing Hirodod intended to send a message, Tom decisively contacted the waiting Black Hound Warrior via walkie-talkie and ignited the smoke bombs.

Then Tom and the rest, covering their noses and mouths with their clothes, didn’t hesitate to rush into the smoke.

Now the inside was plunged into complete chaos.

Whether it was Black Hound Warriors or Black Armored Cavalry of the Defender Sect, because their vision was blocked, they could only swing their weapons wildly, unable to differentiate enemies from allies.

Guided by his last memory, Tom groped towards the direction of the carriage, getting struck several times, but since he always kept the Dragon Scale Shield firmly in front of him and tucked himself behind it as much as possible, he wasn’t injured,

and he kept swinging his sword, with most blows missing, a few clanging against armor, and only one or two feeling like they pierced something.

Before he had time to figure out which unlucky soul he had wounded, a strong sense of crisis suddenly surged in his heart. Without a second thought, he threw himself forward.

After that, he felt his head crash into something hard.

The impact caused stars to burst before his eyes, leaving him dizzily disoriented, no longer able to tell directions apart.

As the smoke began to clear somewhat, Tom found himself lying in front of the carriage.

This was probably what Prophet Merlin referred to as "no need to break iron shoes in fruitless searching, as it comes of its own accord without any effort."

Tom couldn’t help but rejoice, turned his head to crawl into the carriage, but simultaneously two Black Armored Cavalrymen on the other side also spotted him.

One against two? And they were from the formidable Defender Sect. Tom’s heart sank once more.

As he was wondering if he would meet his end here today, those two cavalrymen seemed to have received another command and, rather than joining forces to finish him, they turned their horses around and withdrew on their own initiative.
