Chapter 343: Chapter 101 The Gold in the Car
Hirodod didn’t bother to explain any further.
He simply gestured for Clara to follow him.
The tall man previously seen leading the little maid to the Great Temple of Alberto, his entire body encased in black armor, appeared once again outside the Temple.
Like a specter.
But this time he was not alone, forty-odd cavalry dressed like him followed behind, along with an inconspicuous-looking horse-drawn carriage.
The tall man approached Hirodod and said in a deep voice, "Commander, all our men have arrived, with the exception of Golden Eyes, who hasn’t been seen since noon."
Hirodod frowned, "Have you made contact with him?"
"I had people mark many places around the city, but there has been no response. Should I leave two men to wait for him?"
"No, there’s no need. We already have few people left in the city; we can’t spare anyone for him. Forget him, let’s leave the city."
After finishing his words, Hirodod made a gesture inviting Clara to proceed.
The little maid was still trying to digest what was happening before her eyes, as everything was so abrupt.
When she left the house tonight, she had thought Hirodod was seeking her out for tomorrow’s imminent battle, to ask her to contact Pisya to bless the troops.
But she didn’t expect Hirodod to have no intention of fighting the battle at all, actually preparing to skedaddle before Matina arrived...
Clara of course didn’t want to go with Hirodod.
It wasn’t that she was particularly attached to Duolin City; regardless of where she was taken, she was going to be confined by Hirodod and lose her freedom. The key was that her experiments were mostly used up.
What remained either required materials too difficult to come by or produced less than satisfactory results, and most crucially, Hirodod’s demands were increasingly high.
The little maid had narrowly managed to get through today’s challenge, but if Hirodod insisted on hearing Pisya’s voice next time, Clara would be at a loss.
So she would rather stay in the city, even though Duolin City had turned into a veritable hell.
"Is there a problem?" noticing the little maid hadn’t moved, Hirodod asked.
"I... I need to return to my place first. My clothes, handkerchief, and other things are still there."
"Don’t worry, I’ve had people prepare all the necessities for the journey," he said.
"Ruby... and Ruby, she’s my friend, I can’t just abandon her."
"Don’t worry, no one knows she’s associated with us. She’ll be safe here. Nema will take care of her. Since you’re so fond of her, you can have her brought over once we’ve settled down," Hirodod said.
His voice was growing impatient.
Clara couldn’t find any more excuses, so she reluctantly boarded the carriage.
Hirodod followed suit, sitting across from Clara.
About twenty of the Black-Armored Cavalry paved the way ahead, and the rest surrounded the carriage, silently making their way out of the city.
Once they descended the slope, the outside wailing and screams became clearer, and the air carried a faint smell of blood.
Clara was experiencing such a scene for the first time and couldn’t help feeling nervous, her hand constantly clutching at her dress.
In contrast, Hirodod across from her seemed calm, even taking out the parchment and pondering over it once more.
A few times, the cries for help got extremely close, with people outside begging them for assistance, but those pleas abruptly stopped.
The carriage did not slow down.
The little maid initially thought the pleas for help were being driven away, but she also knew that these desperate people wouldn’t give up their last straw so quickly.
The conclusion she reached made her shudder.
"There’s a blanket under your seat, you can wrap yourself with it if you’re cold," Hirodod said without looking up.
Although Duolin City was now in total chaos, no one had bothered the carriage on their way.
After all, those fully armed Black Armored Cavalry looked daunting, and there were plenty of easier targets for chaos seekers; there was no need to mess with such tough nuts.
They were almost at the city gates when even Hirodod’s vigilance began to wane.
But then, suddenly, everything changed!
The air was filled with the sound of crossbow arrows tearing through it, followed by horses’ wails and the noise of riders falling off, creating a cacophony.
"Watch out! We’re being ambushed!" The tall man leading them called out, and though some of his comrades were injured, his tone was not too tense.
He had already spotted the attackers on both sides of the road, not too many, just ten, and most had already fired their crossbow arrows.
They had aimed mostly at the horses, and their accuracy was shocking; eight arrows shot, and all hit their targets without a single miss!
However, since Hirodod’s group wasn’t moving quickly, those who were thrown off their horses weren’t seriously injured and immediately charged at the attackers without waiting for the tall man’s orders.
The rest stayed close to the carriage and formed a solid shield wall with their bodies to prevent any more sneak arrows from hitting those inside.
In a short while, the Prayers’ Order Cavalry who had charged ahead were already clashing with the ambushers.
The tall man observed for a while and realized these foes were quite formidable, their combat strength matching that of the elite warriors from major families, though it was largely due to their superior weapons and equipment.
It was impressive that they were holding their ground against an equal number of Prayers’ Order Cavalry, not crumbling even now.
These were clearly not the rabble of the new recruits; however, their numbers were too few.
If it weren’t for the need to protect Hirodod inside the carriage, the Cavalry of the Prayers’ Order could have ended the fight swiftly if they all pressed forward; even if they deployed just a quarter of their troops, the outcome of the battle would be beyond doubt.
As the tall man was thinking this, a shout rang out, "There’s gold in the carriage! A carriage full of gold!!!"
Then more than a dozen voices shouted together, "Gold! There’s gold in the carriage!"
This call instantly attracted the looting new recruits in the vicinity, who were yelling, "Gold, where’s the gold?"
"In the carriage! It’s full of gold! Some noble in the city is trying to flee before the war breaks out, all his wealth is in that carriage."
Upon hearing this, Hirodod’s face turned ashen, but it was a moment when he couldn’t come forward to clarify.
Although he was the nominal Commander of the new recruits, if these people discovered him leaving the city at this time, Hirodod feared he wouldn’t be able to leave at all.
So he could only order the Cavalry of the Prayers’ Order, "Break through."
Thus, the remaining thirty-something cavalrymen stopped worrying about their comrades still tangled with the ambushers and, riding hard, continued to escort the middle carriage towards the city gate.
"Damn, they’re trying to escape with the gold!" someone in the crowd shouted, and then the new recruits who had just arrived began to chase desperately.
But with only two legs, how could they possibly run faster than the four-legged horses, unless...
The tall man looked at the spikes on the ground, feeling a mix of shock and fury. In just a short time, several more horses panicked, throwing their riders off and bolting away, and the remaining horses dared not keep moving forward.
At the same time, the new recruits from behind were catching up again, and their numbers were still growing.
Driven by the lure of gold, they seemed to have forgotten the vast gap in weapon quality and skill between themselves and their opponents.
