Chapter 333: Chapter 91 Tom and His Miracle

Tom finally understood why that ragged group of commoners dared to talk back to a noble like Constantino and even threaten him.

It turned out that the Raimondi family had already lost control over Duolin City, but Tom still couldn’t figure out why Hirodod would rally such a disorganized mob.

Wars aren’t decided by sheer numbers alone. Those who rush into battle untrained, clad in simple clothes and wielding farm tools, even if they outnumber the regular army tenfold, end up only wailing for their fathers and howling for their mothers after being slaughtered.

But the strife within the Silver Moon Church wasn’t something a Double Rest Sect believer like Tom could make sense of, so he didn’t bother.

He had only entered Duolin City to save someone, and after getting the Passage Order, he bid Constantino farewell.

Before he left, Constantino repeatedly warned Tom not to cause trouble in the city, to which the Black Dog Guard Captain readily agreed.

Once Constantino left, Tom planned to find a place to stay first.

Unexpectedly, even such a simple task became troublesome.

Because the new troops were continuously conducting trials and looting throughout the city, almost all shops had closed their doors, inns included.

After searching through most of the city, Tom and his companions couldn’t find a place to stay.

Though the Black Dog warriors didn’t mind simply sleeping on the streets, comfort was secondary; considering the current atmosphere in the city, doing so was not safe.

They might have run into those red-eyed new soldiers spoiling for a fight.

Tom looked at Redio, who was also looking back at him with the corners of his mouth slightly raised, revealing a hint of mockery, "Captain Jerry wouldn’t ask Prophet Merlin for help with something like this, would he?"

Tom wasn’t offended and simply replied to Redio, "If I can find a place to sleep before nightfall, then you will be my servant for three days.

"I’ve always had a wish to have an arrogant noble as my servant. Although you’re no longer a noble, you’re still quite arrogant, so I think you’ll do just fine."

"You’re on. But if you can’t find any, then you’ll be my servant, carrying my chamber pot," Redio retorted.

"Fair enough."

After speaking, Tom continued to lead the group forward. After walking two more streets, they finally encountered a shop that was open.

From far away, they could hear the laughter and singing of a minstrel coming from inside.

"Seems like my luck isn’t too bad," Tom said with a smile.

Redio’s expression was a bit dark as he looked up at the sign above the door – One-eyed Giant Tavern – and was about to head inside.

Unexpectedly, they were stopped by two burly twin guards at the door, "Hey, kid, the tavern’s not open today."

No sooner had the guard’s words dropped than the tavern’s door was pushed open, and a drunkard with a big beard stumbled out.

Without caring about the crowd outside, he proceeded to reveal himself and relieve his bladder by the roadside.

"You call this closed?" Redio’s expression darkened even more.

"Indeed, what of it?" said the guard on the left, patting the battle-axe at his waist and grinning.

Then Tom stepped forward, flipping a silver coin, "Are you guys from the Red Wolf Mercenary Corps?"

The guard on the left caught the coin, dropping the mocking smile, "The Red Wolf Mercenary Corps dissolved six years ago."

"I know, it’s a shame because of that incident with the Gladstone family. It’s a pity; Wolf Claw was a good captain aside from trusting those nobles too much."

"Nobles can’t be trusted," the guard on the left agreed, then asked, "Friend, which mercenary group are you with?"

His tone had become much more polite than before.

"I am Tom, everyone calls me Comical Tom. I don’t have a fixed Mercenary Group, but I’ve worked with quite a few," he said.

"You’re Tom, the Comical Tom?" The guard on the left widened his already bell-like eyes in astonishment.

"No offense, but everyone talks about you, talks about your... "

"My hair not having much left, right?" Tom shook his head, his black hair shimmering, "Luckily, miracles still exist in this world, and this time, the miracle just happened to descend upon me."

"That’s incredible," the guard on the left said in amazement, while the one on the right, though still silent, nodded in agreement.

He even leaned forward, getting up close to Tom, examining his hair meticulously as if looking for some flaw. However, today, each strand of hair on Tom’s head was the real deal.

Tom even volunteered to lift his bangs to show the scalp underneath.

"You need a new nickname," the guard on the left said, stepping aside to open the door to the tavern behind him.

Tom left a few Lizardman Warriors to watch the carriage while he, along with Redio and the others, went inside.

"Why did they let you in and not me?" Redio asked.

"Obviously, this is a mercenary tavern, which is why those new troops don’t dare to come here to cause trouble," Tom replied.

"You were once a mercenary, and quite a famous one?"

"Well... indeed, quite a few people have heard my name." Tom rubbed his nose and said to a Female Waiter nearby, "Give me five malt beers and I would also like six rooms."

"The malt beer will be right up, but we’re fully booked for rooms."

"Do you know anywhere else in town that can accommodate us weary travelers?" Tom tossed another silver coin as a tip.

"Go find Ji Fu, the cripple. He can arrange accommodations for you."

"Where’s Ji Fu, the cripple?"

The Female Waiter nodded in a direction, "By the wall, the one guessing coins."

"Thank you."

Tom then approached Ji Fu who had just guessed wrong and lost a decent amount of money, brooding over his loss.

After hearing Tom’s request, Ji Fu immediately responded, "Six rooms, one gold lion per day."

"You’re robbing us, friend."

"No, it’s a fair price," the cripple Ji Fu said. "You and your men don’t seem like the frugal type, and coming to Duolin City at this time, you’re definitely up to no good.

"Don’t worry though, I have no objections to it and don’t care what you plan on doing. Moreover, I can assure you that you will not be harassed by those new troops outside. One gold lion a day is a fair price."

"How do we know you aren’t deceiving us?" Redio asked with a stern face.

Ji Fu raised his hand and ordered another malt beer, "In our line of business, reputation is the most important thing. You can ask around the tavern and see if I, Ji Fu, have ever betrayed my clients."

"You’re a local, aren’t you? Aren’t you worried about us causing trouble in the city?" Redio was still skeptical.

Ji Fu sneered, "You’ve come from outside the city, haven’t you noticed what’s happening here? I don’t think this city could get any worse than it is now."
