Chapter 322: Chapter 80: The Legacy of High Priest Reves

Hirodod wasn’t oblivious to the dissatisfaction of those around him, he just didn’t care.

He even turned down an invitation to have lunch with Sir Ed, the Family Head of the Raimondi family, the master of Duolin City.

While publicly maintaining a neutral stance, privately, he was always a staunch supporter of Hirodod.

Priest Martina had never trusted Priest Kerkwon, and it was Sir Ed who had betrayed her, causing her plans to be exposed and forcing her to flee Duolin City.

Priest Martina had wanted to use the power of the Raimondi family to fight against Hirodod’s Church Cavalry.

But to her surprise, right after Sir Ed agreed to help, he turned around and informed Hirodod about her plans.

Had it not been for the aid of a mysterious person at the critical moment, Priest Martina would probably be imprisoned alongside Priest Hesiod by now.

However, Hirodod had more important matters to attend to and couldn’t afford to appease his important allies for the time being.

He finally made up his mind to make a trip to Iron Horn City to meet the maid by Merlin’s side in person.

Before leaving, he called for Golden Eyes and tasked him with the responsibility of closely monitoring several key individuals in the city. He granted Golden Eyes the authority to arrest any suspects should there be any unusual movement, and if necessary, to kill on sight.

Afterward, Hirodod announced to everyone that he felt the calling of the goddess and was leaving the city to search for the key to victory in the upcoming battle.

The uneasy feeling among the citizens only grew after his declaration—not worse had Hirodod claimed to feel the divine calling earlier or later, but just as the enemy forces were nearing the city, which made it seem like he was trying to escape the dire situation.

Especially after witnessing the disorganized mob outside the city, more and more people within started to lose confidence in the upcoming battle.

Upon hearing the news, Sir Ed couldn’t even bring himself to eat and immediately took a carriage straight to Hirodod’s residence, only to find that many people were already there, looking at each other in bewilderment.

Asking the guards outside, they learned that Hirodod had already left Duolin City, and like Sir Ed, many people were left feeling both amused and angry at this turn of events.

Meanwhile, Hirodod, along with four of his Church Cavalry, made the swift journey to Iron Horn City in just two and a half days, traveling day and night.

As they neared the city, two horses collapsed from exhaustion, and although the members of the Cavalry were robust and skilled horsemen, they too showed signs of weariness.

On the contrary, Hirodod, although covered in dust, seemed to grow more spirited the farther he ran, his eyes bright and sharp.

Upon entering the city, he headed straight for the Bad Temper Tavern, cleaned himself up, then hastily filled his stomach with some dark bread. When the carriage with the cross carved on its revolver arrived, he immediately got on.

He took a brief nap on the carriage until it came to a stop, at which point Hirodod also opened his eyes.

The location he used to hide Clara was originally a secret mansion gifted by a wealthy merchant to his mentor, Priest Reeves, as a show of devotion to the goddess.

In turn, Reeves helped the merchant’s daughter become a Priest three years later.

As Priest Reeves’s most valued pupil, Hirodod had lost count of how many similar affairs he had seen, many of which he was in charge of handling.

Since Priest Reeves owned so many secret mansions, he even forgot about the one in Iron Horn City, never having visited it for years.

In truth, Hirodod indeed owed Priest Reeves his gratitude, not only because the latter was his mentor, who had elevated him to the position of High Priest and put him in charge of the Church Cavalry.

And after Priest Reeves passed away, Hirodod took over most of the estate left by Priest Reeves.

This estate was not just a vast wealth but also the power that Priest Reeves meticulously nurtured for nearly a century and the various intelligence he had gathered.

The reason Hirodod was able to connect with Sir Ed and have him on his side in the struggle against Priest Martina was that he knew exactly what Sir Ed truly desired.

It was also thanks to the inheritance left by Priest Reeves that he was able to quickly figure out who in the Council of Seven could be persuaded, who could be intimidated, and who would never submit, hence he could seize control of the Church’s upper echelons in the shortest time.

In any case, Hirodod’s heart was filled with gratitude towards his teacher, and he planned to give his teacher a grand funeral once everything had settled down.

While thinking this, he stepped down from the carriage. Nanny Nema was already waiting in the front yard and gave a bow when she saw Hirodod.

Hirodod nodded back and asked, "Where is the child?"

"Still in the house embroidering. Ruby is with her," said Nanny Nema. "I will go call her immediately."

Hirodod waved his hand, "No need, you lead the way. I’ll go to her directly."

After walking a few steps, Hirodod suddenly stopped and pointing at the characters on a tree, said, "The Divine Pattern on this tree, is it also carved by the child?"

"Correct, as you instructed, as long as she doesn’t leave the house or contact the outside world, we will not stop her from doing anything, so I just let her carve such sacrilegious patterns."

"Not only that, she has embroidered the same patterns on her handkerchief, clothes, and even her bedsheet, calling upon her dirty foreign god."

"And then, has anything noteworthy happened?"

"Nothing so far. Everything is as usual. It seems her foreign god is also afraid of you and Pisya."

When he heard Nanny Nema say this, Hirodod didn’t feel happy but rather somewhat disappointed.

Afterward, he arrived outside Clara’s room, hearing the laughter of the young girls from inside.

Hirodod reached out and knocked on the door.

The laughter inside ceased immediately, and after a moment, Ruby’s voice rose, "Is that Nanny Nema outside?"

"What are you all talking about? It seems quite interesting," Hirodod spoke up.

Upon hearing his voice, the expression of Ruby inside the room changed subtly, and not daring to delay, she quickly opened the door.

She was then about to curtsy but was stopped by Hirodod.

Ruby stepped back to make way, allowing Hirodod to come in from the outside, and then helped him take off his cloak.

Hirodod moved his wrists around and said to Ruby, "That will do, you may leave."

Hearing this, Ruby hesitated for a moment, seeming somewhat concerned about Clara in the room, but upon meeting Hirodod’s gaze, a shock went through her heart.

Even though Hirodod’s face carried a smile, his eyes had turned cold.

Ruby dared not try any tricks and obediently left the room.
