Chapter 290: Chapter 48 Passionate Speech
When Li Yu heard that Anton had signed up for the open mic missionary event, he was quite surprised.
After all, the Universal Language teacher was not a Sabbath of the Silver Moon Sect, he wasn’t even a Saturday worshipper, though he had recently gone head-to-head with over a hundred Pisya followers in a passionate debate before Ireya’s conversion ceremony, and had expressed to Li Yu a strong desire to join the Double Rest Sect afterwards.
Considering his physical and mental state, Li Yu still suggested he take a few days off.
However, Anton somehow heard about this missionary event and, leaning on his crutches, hobbled over from Teacup Castle to volunteer himself, saying he had crammed on the doctrines and precepts of the Double Rest Sect and could recite them from memory.
Seeing his determination, Li Yu eventually decided to give him a chance.
The Universal Language teacher clomped onto the wooden stage, grabbed the microphone, and not to mention anything else, his aura alone was more in line with the Green Field populace’s general perception of a Divine Officer than the previous contestants had been.
Serious in countenance, steadfast in gaze, coupled with his gaunt figure, and the antlers full of branches on his head... he was the very image of an ascetic.
Without any nonsense, Anton got straight to the point.
"There’s no need for me to introduce myself again, I bet you all know who I am. As you can see, I too once strayed from the right path, yes, just like many of you, I was deceived and used by the Silver Moon Church, bewitched by that Pisya bitch.
"This is so sad, and what’s even sadder is that I had no clue about it back then. The scholars in white robes in the Royal Capital always say humans have five senses, but the followers of Pisya have a sixth sense. Do you know what that is?"
The Universal Language teacher paused and a sneer appeared on his lips, "—An intense sense of satisfaction. That is the only thing Pisya can bestow upon her followers.
"Do you still remember how you survived those past few winters? Whenever blizzards came, you stayed in your drafty huts, shivering with cold. Huddled with your stinking cattle and sheep, listening to the creaking of the wooden door, worrying whether your house would be blown away.
"You prayed devoutly to your gods, and she responded to you, whispering in your ears, ’I will protect you, and let you survive this harsh winter,’ or some other rubbish. Sure enough, you didn’t freeze to death, so the next year everyone loudly praised Pisya.
"Thanking her for her protection once again. Why didn’t anyone stand up and call her a fraud? Oh, it’s because those deceived by her are already lying in the graveyard, unable to speak up!" Anton raised his voice, "That’s the bitch’s trickery!"
"Now look at what the great Saturday does. It sends a Prophet from the Divine Country, descending before you, granting you blankets to fend off the cold, bread when you’re hungry, teaching you how to farm better, how to harvest more crops, how to build sturdy brick houses, giving you a warm kang...
"It protects you, not with empty words of encouragement, but by slaying the Black Dragon that was wreaking havoc in the western frontiers! Those false gods could never achieve that!
"So tell me, my friends, why shouldn’t we worship it! Why not pursue a better life! Let’s build the Divine Country on land together!"
As he spoke the last word, the Universal Language teacher lifted his hands high in the air.
After a brief silence, the crowd erupted into an unprecedented cheer, with everyone shouting the name of Saturday’s god in unison.
The seated judges also stood up, one after another, to applaud.
Miss Rabbit clapped her hands while expressing her feelings, "How come I never realized this guy had such eloquence before, although I knew he was going to criticize the Silver Moon Church even before he spoke, the way he did so was so spirited and incisive, and then he promoted the Double Rest Sect so effectively! 10 points, this definitely deserves 10 points."
Adelle also expressed her agreement, nodding slightly and saying, "I give 10 points as well. It’s hard to believe that under the Church’s ranks, there was such a talent hiding among the deacons, who for so many years never got the opportunity to go to the Temple for further studies. It really makes one question the Church’s personnel management."
"As for that... I actually think he had an epiphany after wandering on the edge of death once; he used to seem kind of foolish." The Lady shrugged.
And Hera had given her score even before Ireya held up her sign—a full score as well—and turning to Li Yu, she said, "Prophet, I propose we expedite his initiation ceremony."
Fearing Li Yu might not agree, she added, "I realize that Anton might be more motivated by his hatred for the Silver Moon Church and wants to join us in hopes of revenge against them.
"But you have also said that in the process of missionary work, we might need all sorts of people. We should seek common ground while tolerating differences. Anyone whose goals intersect with ours, can be united with us. We can absorb them into our ranks first, then gradually educate and influence them over time."
"Not bad, you’re a quick learner," Li Yu nodded in response.
He too had not expected Anton to have such a ace up his sleeve—or, as Ireya put it, the universal language teacher’s enlightenment came as suddenly as a strike that opened his meridians.
He had taught himself, having already learned to tell Soviet Union jokes.
Unlike other Sabbaths of the Double Rest Sect, his preaching was very aggressive, and combining his decades of grass-roots work experience with the Silver Moon Church, it was also very persuasive.
His criticisms were logical and well-founded, making it difficult for anyone from the Silver Moon Church to refute them here.
In fact, Quintus’s face looked terrible right now. Having been berated for so long was uncomfortable enough, but what made it worse was that Quintus knew that the universal language teacher’s tirade was not completely about slandering or spreading rumors.
From the reactions of the villagers around, it was clear that Anton’s words had struck a chord with them.
Many who felt a bit guilty about betraying Pisya for the Saturday cause now felt their lingering guilt dissipate with Anton’s speech, and even saw themselves as victims, entitled to shake off Pisya’s "control" with righteous indignation.
But this was clearly not right. To be fair, the Silver Moon Church had done quite a bit for the people of the West over the years.
For most people, especially the lower classes, having the Silver Moon Church was still slightly better than not having it.
But Anton didn’t mention any of this, and from his preaching just now, Quintus only sensed his deep malice towards the Silver Moon Church.
